Book excerpt: While the original focus of this long-standing series from the Materials Research Society was on hydrogenated amorphous silicon, the symposia have now expanded to incorporate microcrystalline silicon. The two, in fact, are very closely connected since the latter material can be grown by making comparatively small changes to the deposition conditions for amorphous silicon. This book offers an interesting variety of papers on deposition techniques, materials properties, characterization methods and devices - nearly all focused on thin-film forms of hydrogenated silicon. Topics include: Staebler-Wronski and fundamental defect studies in amorphous silicon; the story of hydrogen in amorphous silicon; photoelectric properties of amorphous silicon; deposition and properties of microcrystalline silicon; deposition studies for amorphous silicon and related materials; solar cells; thin-film transistors and sensors and novel device concepts.

This book was released on 2005-09-30 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book continues the long-standing and highly successful series on amorphous silicon science and technology. The opening article honors the pioneering use of photons to probe silicon films and provides an historical overview of optical absorption for studies of the Urbach edge and disorder. Additional invited presentations focus on new approaches for the fabrication of higher stability amorphous silicon-based materials and solar cells, and on the characterization of materials and cells both structurally and electronically. The book includes topics relevant to solar cells, including the role of hydrogen in metastability phenomena and deposition processes, and the application of atomistic material simulations in elucidating film growth mechanisms and structure as characterized by in situ probes. Chapters are devoted to nanostructures, such as quantum dots and wires, and to nano/microcrystalline and poly/single crystalline films, the latter involving new concepts in crystalline grain growth and epitaxy. Device applications are also highlighted, such as thin-film transistors, solar cells, and image sensors, operable on the meter scale, to memories, operable on the nanometer scale.

Book excerpt: Today’s solar cell multi-GW market is dominated by crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer technology, however new cell concepts are entering the market. One very promising solar cell design to answer these needs is the silicon hetero-junction solar cell, of which the emitter and back surface field are basically produced by a low temperature growth of ultra-thin layers of amorphous silicon. In this design, amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) constitutes both „emitter“ and „base-contact/back surface field“ on both sides of a thin crystalline silicon wafer-base (c-Si) where the electrons and holes are photogenerated; at the same time, a-Si:H passivates the c-Si surface. Recently, cell efficiencies above 23% have been demonstrated for such solar cells. In this book, the editors present an overview of the state-of-the-art in physics and technology of amorphous-crystalline heterostructure silicon solar cells. The heterojunction concept is introduced, processes and resulting properties of the materials used in the cell and their heterointerfaces are discussed and characterization techniques and simulation tools are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic light-emitting diode(OLED) technology has achieved significant penetration in the commercial market for small, low-voltage and inexpensive displays. Present and future novel technologies based on OLEDs involve rigid and flexible flat panel displays, solid-state lighting, and lasers. Display applications may range from hand-held devices to large flat panel screens that can be rolled up or hung flat on a wall or a ceiling. Organic Electroluminescence gives an overview of the on-going research in the field of organic light-emitting materials and devices, covering the principles of electroluminescence in organic thin films, as well as recent trends, current applications, and future potential uses. The book begins by giving a background of organic electroluminescence in terms of history and basic principles. It offers details on the mechanism(s) of electroluminescence in thin organic films. It presentsin-depth discussions of the parameters that control the external electroluminescence quantum efficiency including the photoluminescence quantum yield, the light-output coupling factor, carrier/charge injection and transport, and electron and hole recombination processes in organic semiconductors. The authors address the design and the characterization of amorphous charge transport materials with high glass transition temperatures, light-emitting small molecules and conjugated polymers. The book covers state-of-the-art concepts and technologies such as fluorescent and phosphorescent OLEDs, various approaches for patterning organics, and active matrix organic emissive displays including their back panel thin film transistors and pixel electronics. It concludes by summarizing future directions for OLEDs in organic light-emitting displays, large area distributed solid state light sources, and lasers using organic thin films, nanostructures, and photonic crystals. Organic Electroluminescence is an excellent resource and reference for stu

Book excerpt: Although this is the 16th volume in a long-standing and successful series, the focus is no longer limited to hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). The distinction between short- and medium-range order, and between homogeneous and heterogeneous semiconductor materials, is indeed too difficult to maintain. Instead, the volume covers amorphous and microcrystalline silicon from materials physics to new applications. Papers from a joint session with a symposium on Flat-Panel Display Materials and Large-Area Processes are included. The volume also features special focused sessions on heterogeneous materials, color sensors and radiation imaging, and parameter extraction and device modelling. Topics include: amorphous and polycrystalline thin-film transistors; solar cells; color and X-ray sensors, novel devices, luminescence and sensitization; device modelling and parameter extraction; growth, alloys and clathrates; metastability, hydrogen, atomic and electronic structure; defects and charge transport; and heterogeneous silicon - formation, properties and devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inexorable drive for increased integrated circuit functionality and performance places growing demands on the metal and dielectric thin films used in fabricating these circuits, as well as spurring demand for new materials applications and processes. This book directly addresses issues of widespread concern in the microelectronics industry - smaller feature sizes, new materials and new applications that challenge the reliability of new technologies. While the book continues the focus on issues related to interconnect reliability, such as electromigration and stress, particular emphasis is placed on the effects of microstructure. An underlying theme is understanding the importance of interactions among different materials and associated interfaces comprising a single structure with dimensions near or below the micrometer scale. Topics include: adhesion and fracture; gate oxide growth and oxide interfaces; surface preparation and gate oxide reliability; oxide degradation and defects; micro-structure, texture and reliability; novel measurement techniques; interconnect performance and reliability modeling; electromigration and interconnect reliability and stress and stress relaxation.
