En una época de radical transición como la nuestra no debemos conformarnos con los lamentos. Hay que ir más allá del pesimismo indiferente, buscando las fuentes de estas capacidades en nuestra propia conciencia y en la conciencia colectiva. Aunque estén obturadas, estas fuentes no están agotadas. Rollo May define la sociedad actual como «esquizoide», porque se evitan en medida creciente las relaciones afectivas. En su lugar aparece la apatía, fenómeno peligroso porque guarda una relación dialéctica con la violencia: Ésta es el último recurso para llenar el vacío de la falta de relación. El autor estudia a fondo los problemas del amor en la historia de la cultura, en la civilización actual, en las teorías psicosociales y psicoterapéuticas. También analiza en todas sus implicaciones la crisis de la voluntad y su relación con la incapacidad de desear, a la que define como enfermedad. A continuación relaciona ambas capacidades mostrando que en la mentalidad moderna parecen incompatibles. Sólo una nueva comprensión del amor y la voluntad permite volver a unirlas positivamente como potencial personal y motor de la sociedad.
