Book Synopsis Role-play and the World as Stage in the Comedia by : Jonathan Thacker
Download or read book Role-play and the World as Stage in the Comedia written by Jonathan Thacker and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theatrum mundi metaphor was well-known in the Golden Age, and was often employed, notably by Calderón in his religious theatre. However, little account has been given of the everyday exploitation of the idea of the world as stage in the mainstream drama of the Golden Age. This study examines how and why playwrights of the period time and again created characters who dramatize themselves, who re-invent themselves by performing new roles and inventing new plots within the larger frame of the play. The prevalence of metatheatrical techniques among Golden Age dramatists, including Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Calderón de la Barca and Guillén de Castro, reveals a fascination with role-playing and its implications. Thacker argues that in comedy, these playwrights saw role-playing as a means by which they could comment on and criticize the society in which they lived, and he reveals a drama far less supportive of the social status quo in Golden Age Spain than has been traditionally thought to be the case.
Book Synopsis Unraveling the Real by : Cynthia Duncan
Download or read book Unraveling the Real written by Cynthia Duncan and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unraveling the Real is a very readable, succinct introduction to the topic of the fantastic and its primary critics. Duncan presents a review of the texts on the fantastic and applies this trace to individual authors and film directors, narrative strategies, psychological processes, and gender issues. Her introduction is effective in establishing the borders and transgressions of the fantastic, and she is not afraid of moving from the literature of and on the fantastic to the questioning of cultural constructs. Her objective to emphasize the analysis of social criticism is an effective approach."--Enrique Sacerio-Gari, Dorothy Nepper Marshall Professor of Hispanic and Hispanic-American Studies, Bryn Mawr College.

Book Synopsis A Concordance to Juan Ruiz Libro de Buen Amor by : Rigo Mignani
Download or read book A Concordance to Juan Ruiz Libro de Buen Amor written by Rigo Mignani and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1977-06-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first concordance of Juan Ruiz's Book of Good Love (Libro de Buen Amor), written in the fourteenth century. The volume's editors, dealing with three slightly different manuscripts, have chosen to meticulously integrate the language from all three editions into one thorough concordance. The result is a significant work that serves as a companion to Ruiz's work that would be vital to any study of medieval Spanish linguistics. In addition to the usual material to be found in a concordance, this book has the following features: the text appears in diplomatic transcription from the manuscripts, for fidelity, while the entry list of words has been partly normalized as for spelling, for convenience; an extensive list of homographs; no omission of high frequency words; frequency list at the end; no reproduction of bulky and difficult computer printout. The book has been photocomposed from the tape.
Book Synopsis A Narrative Biography of Horacio Quiroga, the Lone Anarchist by : Wilson Alves-Bezerra
Download or read book A Narrative Biography of Horacio Quiroga, the Lone Anarchist written by Wilson Alves-Bezerra and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique and definitive biography in English of the Uruguayan-Argentinian short story writer Horacio Quiroga (1878-1937), known as the Latin-American Poe. Written in amusing prose and with an academic background, which can be an important reference for the public in general as well as to Latin American literature researchers all over the world, it is an up-to-date, narrative biography by a Brazilian writer and researcher who has dedicated the last twenty years to Quiroga’s translation and research. The research uses several unknown or lesser-known documents as well as newspapers and magazines from the beginning of the 20th century, found in libraries and archives in Argentina, Brazil, Germany, and Uruguay. The book is written against a contemporary background, and focusses on the humanization of Quiroga and the participation of, until now, maginalized women in his personal and public life, such as Alfonsina Storni and Norah Lange, allowing the construction of an image which is less monumental and more complex in its contradictions.
