Book excerpt: Within the last decade the molecular biology of tumor models has revealed the identification of several metastasis- related molecules. These volumes attempt to review the most recent approaches of their mechanisms, regulation and way to treat their malignant alterations. The first volume covers the presentation of proteases and inhibitors and their role in invasion of tumor cells, also cell adhesion molecules and their interaction with the extracellular matrix. In the second volume the regulation of tumor progression and angiogenesis by cytokines, growth factors and motility factors is outlined. The third volume deals with detection of micrometastases and therapeutic approaches, such as immunotherapy, gene therapy, chemotherapy and surgical strategies to combat metastatic spread.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes our current knowledge on belowground defence strategies in plants by world-class scientists actively working in the area. The volume includes chapters covering belowground defence to main soil pathogens such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Verticillium, Phytophthora, Pythium and Plasmodiophora, as well as to migratory and sedentary plant parasitic nematodes. In addition, the role of root exudates in belowground plant defence will be highlighted, as well as the crucial roles of pathogen effectors in overcoming root defences. Finally, accumulating evidence on how plants can differentiate beneficial soil microbes from the pathogenic ones will be covered as well. Better understanding of belowground defences can lead to the development of environmentally friendly plant protection strategies effective against soil-borne pathogens which cause substantial damage on many crop plants all over the world. The book will be a useful reference for plant pathologists, agronomists, plant molecular biologists as well as students working on these and related areas.

Book excerpt: The last 25 years have seen significant advances in our understanding of the mycorrhizal fungi that colonize most of the world’s plants, and the mycorrhizal networks that form and extend into the soil beyond plant roots. In addition to a thorough review of recent research on mycorrhizal networks, this book provides readers with alternative perspectives. The book is organized into three sections: Network Structure, Nutrient Dynamics, and the Mutualism-Parasitism Continuum. Chapter 1 addresses the specificity of ectomycorrhizal symbionts and its role in plant communities, and provides an updated list of terms and definitions. Chapter 2 explores interactions between symbionts in mycorrhizal fungi networks, as well as interactions between fungal individuals. The second section of the book begins with the examination in Chapter 3 of extramatrical mycelium (mycelia beyond the root tips) in ectomycorrhizal fungi, focused on carbon and nitrogen. Chapter 4 reviews the influence of mycorrhizal networks on outcomes of plant competition in arbuscular mycorrhizal plant communities. Chapter 5 discusses nutrient movement between plants through networks with a focus on the magnitude, fate and importance of mycorrhiza-derived nutrients in ectomycorrhizal plants. Section 3 opens with a review of research on the role of ectomycorrhizal networks on seedling establishment in a primary successional habitat, in Chapter 6. The focus of Chapter 7 is on facilitation and antagonism in arbuscular mycorrhizal networks. Chapter 8 explores the unique networking dynamic of Alnus, which differs from most ectomycorrhizal plant hosts in forming isolated networks with little direct connections to networks of other host species in a forest. Chapter 9 argues that most experiments have not adequately tested the role of mycorrhizal networks on plant community dynamics, and suggests more tests to rule out alternative hypotheses to carbon movement between plants, especially those that include experimental manipulations of the mycorrhizal networks. Plant ecologists have accumulated a rich body of knowledge regarding nutrient acquisition by plants. The editor proposes that research indicating that mycorrhizal fungi compete for nutrients, which are then delivered to multiple hosts through mycorrhizal networks, represents an important new paradigm for plant ecologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers crop stress management with potential implications for crop production induced by Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). It provides new insights into our understanding of the mechanisms of AMF-mediated growth regulation and stress tolerance covering the most recent biochemical, physiological, molecular, environmental and ecological studies. Focusing on various physiological and molecular mechanisms induced by AMF to enhance tolerance to different stresses, each environmental constraint is discussed in an individual dedicated chapter. Moreover, the book provides not only updated information with new insights and perspectives but also several new topics, such as comprehensive discussion on biotic stressors, the potential role of elevated CO2, hormones, and signal molecules in stress perception, signal transduction and subsequent stress tolerance. The book also discusses the potential implications of AMF for sustainable crop production in the context of climate change. The book can a useful reference book for academics and scientists involved in related research, such as cademics in agronomy and plant sciences, scientists involved in beneficial fungi research, chemists, industrialists and employees involved in the production and marketing of biofertilizers, master and doctoral degree students of agronomy, horticulture, and plant protection majoring in plant physiology and molecular biology, consultants working on the production of crops in marginal environments as well as phytotechnologists working for assisted phytoremediation program. It would also be suitable for agronomy, ecology and plant science-related courses, such as, plant stress physiology, plant growth-promoting microbes, and plant physiology and biochemistry to teach undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students at colleges and universities.
