Excerpt: ... community are equally developing under the direction of missionaries. If our missionaries were properly supported, the Christian work in India would soon be increased. The best way to educate the nonChristian children is to put them in boarding schools where they learn systematic ways of living. Really the boarding schools are the doors of the Christian Church in India. The more such boys and girls are received into the Missions the better it is for the Church, because these very boys and girls become active Christian workers as they grow to manhood and womanhood. Dr. Barrows, after returning from India, said that he was more impressed by the simplicity of the native Christians in their newly adopted faith than by anything he had seen in the whole of India. THE MISSIONS IN INDIA Glorious was the day for India when the pioneer missionaries from England and America first sailed for the land of the Vedas. When India is converted, the day when William Carey landed in India will be observed as a national day, and the Hindus in all parts of India will give thanks to God for sending to them His servants who have been leading them ever since in the truth and setting them free from the bondage of their sins. Indeed, if India is thankful for anything at all, it is for the whole-hearted service of the missionaries. The present Christian population, numbering about 3,000,000 souls, is the direct result of their valuable services. Had it not been for the missionaries, indeed, India would have never been what she is to-day. The pioneer missionaries, under difficulties and trials, came to India and in spite of opposition from all directions continued their God-given work in that strange land. What Magna Charta is to England, what the landing of the MtiM Pilgrim Fathers ...

Yet, both nations have several common areas of interest, strategic goals, and even economic aspirations. Lately, Washington and New Delhi are improving relations and current events are pushing them together in a common cause. Does this new environment present a unique opportunity to finally align both of these countries? This thesis argues an opportunity is presenting itself that could establish both great democracies as partners in the global community.

Book Synopsis The Other One Percent by : Sanjoy Chakravorty
Download or read book The Other One Percent written by Sanjoy Chakravorty and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most remarkable stories of immigration in the last half century is that of Indians to the United States. People of Indian origin make up a little over one percent of the American population now, up from barely half a percent at the turn of the millennium. Not only has its recent growth been extraordinary, but this population from a developing nation with low human capital is now the most-educated and highest-income group in the world's most advanced nation. The Other One Percent is a careful, data-driven, and comprehensive account of the three core processes-selection, assimilation, and entrepreneurship-that have led to this rapid rise. This unique phenomenon is driven by-and, in turn, has influenced-wide-ranging changes, especially the on-going revolution in information technology and its impact on economic globalization, immigration policies in the U.S., higher education policies in India, and foreign policies of both nations. If the overall picture is one of economic success, the details reveal the critical issues faced by Indian immigrants stemming from the social, linguistic, and class structure in India, their professional and geographic distribution in the U.S., their pan-Indian and regional identities, their strong presence in both high-skill industries (like computers and medicine) and low-skill industries (like hospitality and retail trade), and the multi-generational challenges of a diverse group from the world's largest democracy fitting into its oldest.
