Book Synopsis The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by : Margareta Magnusson
Download or read book The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning written by Margareta Magnusson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *The basis for the wonderfully funny and moving TV series developed by Amy Poehler and Scout Productions* A charming, practical, and unsentimental approach to putting a home in order while reflecting on the tiny joys that make up a long life. In Sweden there is a kind of decluttering called döstädning, dö meaning “death” and städning meaning “cleaning.” This surprising and invigorating process of clearing out unnecessary belongings can be undertaken at any age or life stage but should be done sooner than later, before others have to do it for you. In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, artist Margareta Magnusson, with Scandinavian humor and wisdom, instructs readers to embrace minimalism. Her radical and joyous method for putting things in order helps families broach sensitive conversations, and makes the process uplifting rather than overwhelming. Margareta suggests which possessions you can easily get rid of (unworn clothes, unwanted presents, more plates than you’d ever use) and which you might want to keep (photographs, love letters, a few of your children’s art projects). Digging into her late husband’s tool shed, and her own secret drawer of vices, Margareta introduces an element of fun to a potentially daunting task. Along the way readers get a glimpse into her life in Sweden, and also become more comfortable with the idea of letting go.

Book Synopsis The Swedish Acceptance of American Literature by : Carl L. Anderson
Download or read book The Swedish Acceptance of American Literature written by Carl L. Anderson and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decade following World War I, American literature won a large and enthusiastic reading public in Europe. With the exception of such writers as James Fenimore Cooper, Edgar Allan Poe, and Mark Twain, American literature had been virtually unknown before the war, yet, in 1930, Sweden awarded the Nobel Prize in literature to Sinclair Lewis, probably the most dramatic sign of the critical upheaval that had been taking place in European attitudes toward American culture. The Swedish Acceptance of American Literature is a study of this radical shift in opinion as it occurred in Sweden. It first examines the sources of the conventional prejudices against American Literature in vogue at the end of World War I. It then shows how these prejudices had been strengthened by the reaction of Swedish critics to Jack London and Upton Sinclair and how they became, paradoxically, the basis in the next decade of the enthusiastic reception accorded Sinclair Lewis, Theodore Dreiser, Edith Wharton, and other American writers. The book concludes by indicating some of the aftereffects in Sweden of the award of the Nobel Prize to Lewis.
Book Synopsis Whitney Museum of American Art by : Whitney Museum of American Art
Download or read book Whitney Museum of American Art written by Whitney Museum of American Art and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting guide to, and celebration of, the Whitney Museum and its outstanding collection of American art This all-new handbook, a fresh look at the Whitney Museum of American Art's collection, highlights the museum's extraordinary holdings and its fascinating history. Featuring iconic pieces by artists such as Calder, Hopper, Johns, O'Keeffe, and Warhol--as well as numerous works by under-recognized individuals--this is not only a guide to the Whitney's collection, but also a remarkable primer on modern and contemporary American art. Beautifully illustrated with abundant new photography, the book pairs scholarly entries on 350 artists with images of some of their most significant works. The museum's history and the evolution of its collection, including the Whitney's important distinction as one of the few American museums founded by an artist, and the notion of "American" in relation to the collection, are covered in two short essays. Published to coincide with the Whitney's highly anticipated move to a new facility in downtown New York in the spring of 2015, this book celebrates the museum's storied past and vibrant present as it looks ahead to its future.
