Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS The Common Spiders Of The United States This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common Spiders of the United States There are few books on the American spiders, and these are either large and expensive works or else special papers published by scientific societies, and so little known to the public. Since publishing my papers on the New England and Canadian spiders in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy from 1882 to 1894, I have had frequent calls for a smaller and simpler book to meet the wants of readers who, without making a special study of the subject, want to know a little about spiders in general and especially those species that they often meet with. It is hoped this book will answer the purpose and help to lessen the prejudice against spiders, and lead to a more general acquaintance with them, like the popular knowledge of birds and butterflies. The characters used in the descriptions are, as far as possible, those that can be seen without microscopic examination and without much experience in the handling of small animals. The illustrations, which show the form and markings of every species, are from my own drawings and photographs, a large part of them made new for this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Spiders and Their Spinningwork, Vol. 3: A Natural History of the Orbweaving Spiders of the United States, With Special Regard to Their Industry and Habits I count it a duty as well as a pleasure to place among the number of those entitled to my public thanks the name of Miss Elizabeth F. Bonsall, who has made the original drawings for nearly all the plates contained in the atlas. Her faithful and successful work has not always been correctly reproduced by lithographers and colorists, but for the most part it speaks for itself in the admirable rendering from life of the species which she has figured. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiders of the Orb-Weaver Genus Parawixia in America (Araneae: Araneidae) Before a genus has been revised, it may only be known by its most common species or by the type species to which the generic name is attached. However, the type spe cies is often the most aberrant member of the genus, and has been placed in its own genus specifically because of unusual char acters that may not occur in more aver age congenerics. Also, in large diverse families, the study of all species is meces sary to determine generic-level characters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spider Crabs of America The scientific publications of the United States National Museum consist of two series, the Proceedings and the Bulletins. The Proceedings, the first volume of Which was issued in 1878, are intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original, and usually brief, papers based on the collections of the National Museum, presenting newly acquired facts in zoology, geology, and anthropology, including descriptions of new forms of animals and revisions of limited groups. One or two volumes are completed annually and copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, are distributed, as soon as published, to libraries and scientific organizations, and to specialists and others interested in the different subjects. The date of publication is recorded in the table of contents of the volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Nephila Plumipes, or Silk Spider of South Carolina It is but recently that I have had the benefit of an acquaintance with the in vestigations of others upon the economy of the geometrical spiders; and in the entire absence of any American works on this subject, I will refer to the me moirs of Blackwell and other British naturalists published in the Linnman Transactions, Vols. Xvi., xviii., and xxi., in the Zobiogical J ournal, Vols. Iv. And v., in the Transactions of the Entomological Society, Vols. I., ii., and iii.; En tomological Magazine, Vols. Ii. And iii., and Reports of the British Association for 1844 and 1858. The earlier papers are quoted in Kirby and Spence's En tomology, while a brief synopsis of nearly all is contained in the introduction to Part 1. Of Blackwall's Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland, published by the Ray Society in 1861 and 1864. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
