Book excerpt: American Snowflake is a novel set in real time, as Socialist Democrat and Fidel-Castro-T-shirt-wearing millennial Roland Dark begins waking up to the truth about the Democratic Party and the fake news propaganda. It's the election year of 2016, and in Los Angeles, California, the only thing that's certain is that capitalism is over and Bernie Sanders will soon be president of the United States. Hooray for socialism! Everything will be free! America will soon be the socialist utopia that Roland Dark and all his friends have always dreamed of: no one will have a job, and money will rain down from airplanes the government flies over every city. But then Roland's nightmare happens: Donald J. Trump becomes president of the United States. Trump is like . . . oh my gosh . . . like so bad. Los Angeles quickly becomes an unhinged hotbed of radical protesters who haven't showered. Soon after, very bizarre woke rules begin to take shape, and they're starting to drive outspoken Roland Dark insane. Roland's filmmaking colleagues are convinced Trump is a Russian spy, and no one is allowed to say otherwise or they will be thrown off the set. Roland's feminist socialist neighbor is convinced she's being oppressed by something strange called toxic masculinity. Roland's friends who are "people of color" can't stop arguing about who's more oppressed by white privilege. As Roland begins to discover within his inner circles very odd beliefs, which seem to stem from the policies of the Obama administration, he begins looking at his own inner beliefs, and he begins to wonder if he's just as crazy as all of them. He then begins to wonder if everything CAN be free. Communist uprisings have caused devastation in countries such as Cambodia, which just so happens to be where Roland Dark's girlfriend Hong immigrated from. "But surely that wasn't real socialism. Surely it will work here in America," Roland keeps telling himself. As the violent and incredibly delusional behavior of so-called liberals all around him grows, he still just can't seem to understand how anyone could have ever voted for Trump in 2016. The economy will collapse at any moment. Or at least that's what the media keep saying. Roland can't seem to understand why so much money is constantly falling out of his pockets, and why the economy keeps skyrocketing with Trump's deregulation and America First trade policies. It's almost as if freedom and capitalism work, which is odd, because all of the mainstream media said they didn't for all of Roland's life. It's almost as if it's all been fake news the whole time. Still, Roland Dark is steadfast in his beliefs that we are all just slaves to our corporate masters, and all of his friends keep reminding him of these beliefs, given that he wrote his first book, American Slave, about that very same theory. Surely Roland Dark and other brilliant geniuses like Michael Moore are the ones who are right, and it's the Trump supporters who are crazy. As Roland Dark's world begins to unravel, someone from his San Francisco past pops back up into his life. If you really want to know who and what has been causing the division, radicalization, and delusion in America, read this book. But be forewarned that it might just make you end up being a MAGA-hat-wearing, America-loving, Trump-supporting conservative, like its author. This is NOT fake news! Make America Great Again 2020!

Book excerpt: In this Caldecott Medal–winning picture book, the true story of Wilson Bentley and his singular fascination with snowflakes is rendered in rich prose and gorgeous artwork, perfect for the holidays, snow days, and everyday. Wilson Bentley was always fascinated by snow. In childhood and adulthood, he saw each tiny crystal of a snowflake as a little miracle and wanted to understand them. His parents supported his curiosity and saved until they could give him his own camera and microscope. At the time, his enthusiasm was misunderstood. But with patience and determination, Wilson catalogued hundreds of snowflake photographs, gave slideshows of his findings and, when he was 66, published a book of his photos. His work became the basis for all we know about beautiful, unique snowflakes today. This biographical tribute to a very special farmer is the perfect holiday gift or snow day read.

Book excerpt: Is today's youth over sensitive, mollycoddled and intellectually pathetic? Does the scourge of political correctness threaten the very fabric of our nations? Yes, and yes! comes the cry of the incensed politician, columnist, comedian, disgruntled father, and baby boomer. Dubbed the 'snowflake generation', these hypersensitive cowards are up in arms about silly things like bathrooms smeared with faeces in the shape of Swastikas, climate change, and statues of colonisers being kept in their natural habitats of universities and town squares. They make obstinate requests like wondering if a vegan option might be available, or if you could (please) use their correct pronouns. In response to this outrage, writer and Washington Post pop culture host Hannah Jewell has decided to write a book to explain why being a snowflake might not be a bad thing. It might even make the world a better place. Subversive, provocative and very funny, Hannah explains how, shockingly, despising the generation that comes after your own isn't actually a new thing, and why it's good for students (and indeed the rest of us) to kick off. She shows how you can instill resilience in children without having to live through a war or be made to eat octopus; and provides a handy guide to how you - yes, you! - can also become a snowflake and help to make the world a kinder, more empathetic place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angry debates about polarizing speakers have roiled college campuses. Conservatives accuse universities of muzzling unpopular opinions, betraying their values of open inquiry; students sympathetic to the left openly advocate against completely unregulated speech, asking for "safe spaces" and protection against visiting speakers and even curricula they feel disrespects them. Some even call these students "snowflakes"-too fragile to be exposed to opinions and ideas that challenge their worldviews. How might universities resolve these debates about free speech, which pit their students' welfare against the university's commitment to free inquiry and open debate? Ulrich Baer here provides a new way of looking at this dilemma. He explains how the current dichotomy is false and is not really about the feelings of offended students, or protecting an open marketplace of ideas. Rather, what is really at stake is our democracy's commitment to equality, and the university's critical role as an arbiter of truth. He shows how and why free speech has become the rallying cry that forges an otherwise uneasy alliance of liberals and ultra-conservatives, and why this First Amendment absolutism is untenable in law and society in general. He draws on law, philosophy, and his extensive experience as a university administrator to show that the lens of equality can resolve this impasse, and can allow the university to serve as a model for democracy that upholds both truth and equality as its founding principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people have fond memories of Friday nights and Saturday afternoons spent in theatres watching cowboy stars of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s chase villains across the silver screen or help a heroine out of harm's way. Over 2,600 Westerns were produced between 1930 and 1955 and they became a defining part of American culture. This work focuses on the idea that Westerns were one of the vehicles by which viewers learned the values and norms of a wide range of social relationships and behavior, and thus examines the ways in which Western movies reflected American life and culture during this quarter century. Chapters discuss such topics as the ways that Westerns included current events in film plot and dialogue, reinforced the role of Christianity in American culture, reflected the emergence of a strong central government, and mirrored attitudes toward private enterprise. Also covered is how Westerns represented racial minorities, women, and Indians.
