Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Religious Leaders Series It was perhaps not without propriety that I was asked to examine into the elements of his character and teaching, and to compose this book. I was his pupil, his colleague when he was president, and later his colleague in an inverted relation when I became his successor as president of the college, though not immediately following him in this office. My acquaintance with him was not as lengthy as that of some others, but I knew him from widely divergent standpoints, and only by these later years of the anxieties and cares that belong to the presidency of a New England country college have I come to the full understanding and appreciation of the great qualities which marked his career. The estimate which is here presented is the mature estimate of one who has thus had unusual opportunities of knowing him, and of entering into sympathy with his activities. But this will not compensate for the loss of those expressions of his earlier and later inner life of growth which all who knew him would highly value. Nor will it serve to relieve much the lack of that incident which life in a larger community would probably have supplied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leadership of the New America: Racial and Religious Attention was concentrated in certain cities on special nationalities that had important colonies in those cities; and an efiort was made to see leaders representing both sides of questions whether of national, economic or re ligious interest. The conditions described are the con ditions of today, and will change tomorrow. Hence the usefulness of the information is largely temporary, though for the present I trust that it is accurate. It is at least fresh, for it was gathered at first hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders of the Reformation The Reformation of the Sixteenth Century is the principal source of our civil and religious freedom. We are living in the era which it inaugurated, and are moulded by its influence. For this reason it deserves to be studied by all who are interested in the development of the Church and State. The author has not ventured to write a history of this eventful period. He has, however, made it the subject of many lectures, and of these a series is here presented. Though the best authorities have been consulted and freely quoted, the general purpose has been popular rather than scholastic. It has not been deemed necessary to burden the text with proofs and references. Of the work of the most distinguished leaders of the Reformation no more than a brief sketch has been attempted but men of less celebrity have been assigned to the position which is believed to be their due. It will be observed that there has been no dispo sitiou to exalt some men at the expense of others, and that subjects of controversy have not been prominently presented. It is believed that calm and dispassionate study of the lives of the Reform ers will prove that they were all pervaded by a common life; and that though their errors were numerous their purposes were exalted. When these facts are fully recognized, prejudice and ex elusiveness must pass away; and in the fullest sense of the prophecy, there will be one fold and one Shepherd. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growing Church: A Study for the Times Not long ago I found myself in the city of Philadelphia, with an hour to spare before my train was due. I wandered again into old Independence Hall, and presently found myself in the upstairs room where was framed the first constitution of the United States. There I noticed the high backed chair with its quaint carving, of which John Fiske tells in one of his volumes. This is the incident: After the momentous act of signing the new constitution which was to be presented to the country for adoption, the room grew very still. The men who had spent months in thought and debate, knew that their task was done and were weighted with the meaning of it. Washington sat with bowed head, his face buried in his hands. On the back of his chair, in which he had presided over the many sessions of the convention, was emblazoned a half sun, brilliant with gilded rays. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leaders' Handbook: For the Young Men's Christian Associations of North America We are surely in a gregarious era. Almost every branch and phase of society and commerce has grouped those of like interests in highly specialized and multitudinous forms of organization. Constitutions and bylaws of every conceivable nature are today roaring from the presses of our nation to guide and standardize the efforts of both selfishly and altruistically organized bodies. Out of a nation-wide need has grown this first edition of the "Leaders' Handbook." The outstanding expression of this need has been the staggering mortality of leaders' clubs. The foundation upon which too many of our clubs are built is the personality of the physical director rather than the dynamic of Christian service and loyalty to our national program. I firmly believe that there is no other body of men quite so essential to the success of the Young Men's Christian Associations' four-fold program as are the members of the well-established and properly organized leaders' club. Caught in the centripetal whirl of this formative era, we have likewise become intricately banded together on a national scale in order to fulfil in a larger way our obligation to the community and our desire to promote motives of Christian caliber. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Religious Leaders of Oxford and Their Movements: John Wycliffe, John Wesley, John Henry Newman This book was suggested by a course of lectures delivered under the auspices of The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences during the Lenten season of 1918. It has since been revised with some care, and would have been issued earlier but for the pressure of pastoral and public duties. It deals with three great Englishmen, great Christians, great Churchmen, and loyal sons of Oxford, who, as it seems to me, are the foremost leaders in religious life and activity that University has yet given to the world. Many prophets, priests, and kings have been nourished within her borders, but none who in significance and contribution to the general welfare compare with Wycliffe, the real originator of European Protestantism; Wesley, the Anglican priest which became the founder of Methodism and one of the makers of modem England and of English-speaking nations; Newman, the spiritual genius of his century who re-interpreted Catholicism, both Anglican and Roman. Hence I have name the volume "The Three Religious Leaders of Oxford and their Movements," a title which appears to be vindicated by the facts so far as I have been able to ascertain them. It will probably be said that I omit some of these and misconstrue others. This is more than likely, and if it be so, I must be held wholly responsible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Religions in America: The Famous Look Magazine Series on Religion; Plus Facts, Figures, Tables, Charts, Articles, and Comprehensive Reference Material on Churches and Religious Groups in the United States Baptists believe that religious error can never be suppressed or eradicated by legislation, force, or persecution - whether by state or church. The Baptist contention is not for mere tolerance but for absolute liberty. Tolerance means concession and expediency; liberty means inalienable right. The English philosopher John Locke said: The Baptists were the first propounders of absolute liberty, just and true liberty, equal and impartial liberty. Why do Baptists prefer to be called a denomination instead of a church? Because most Baptists do not admit that they constitute a church - but are organized into local churches. The local parish church is the sovereign, all-powerful ecclesiastical unit. The term Baptist Church is used for convenience; denomination is preferred by most Baptists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Appeal to the Real Leaders Never before in the history of the world has it become more necessary that humanity have some real guide to follow. There is an ever increasing volume of new thought and theories. The world is completely overwhelmed with this mass of material. In all this confusing sea we are completely at a loss as to what to believe and follow. It has brought us to the point where we are all sceptical and more or less uncertain as to what to do or think. This is the source of our turbulence. All of us are chasing some will-o'-the-wisp and are sure we are right. We have arrived at the point where we all realize more or less our hopeless condition. We are all more or less fanatical and realize that all are more or less right, but still we all hope for some tangible proof that will give us balance and guidance that can be relied upon as secure and fixed. We are done forever with belief. From now on we must know. If we don't know, then we must know that we don't know. The Christians must produce a proof that they are right. They need to know above all others that they are only guessing. They must stop telling people they know when there is no evidence to uphold them. When they can prove their religion beyond the shadow of a doubt, then they will have a right to teach it as the truth, but not before. However far short of the goal the reader, on reaching the last page, may feel that the writer has fallen, it is hoped that at least there will have been sug gested a vision of The Home God Meant, with some measure of quickening to strive toward its attainment. The viewpoint of the book is that of the Master as he faced the home situation of his day. There were good homes then. He had been reared in one of them. It is not hard to see in his sayings many a reminiscence of the gracious home life that had sheltered his childhood and youth. But it was not so in all of the homes. Even religious leaders were sanctioning many a false standard of home relations. Jesus met such misguided teachings by saying that it was not so in the beginning. He would Show us that the way up to better homes is the way back to the beginning, back to what was in the mind of God when he made man in his own image, male and female. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America of to-Morrow Archbishop Ireland made me acquainted with Abbe F elix Klein, then a Professor in the Catholic In stitute at Paris, and from that day the French capital has been to me another city. The French people can understand us, and sincere Catholics there can open their hearts to sincere Protestants. The gay, gentle, delicate, and refined scholar banters us cheerfully but he really likes us. He interprets for us the inner mo tives of the leaders of the ancient Church, and he be lieves that true religion thrives best in an atmosphere of political freedom. In outer form this prophecy of To-morrow appears to be a jest, a merry notebook of a holiday recreation; in essence it is an affectionate reve lation of a man's soul who believes in liberty and the triumph of truth; it is an interpretation of momentous events which are too near us to be seen in a true per spective. Here is one who is admitted to the evening councils of Paulist fathers, to the private offices of dis tinguished bishops, to the committee rooms of mission ary priests, and American Protestants are taught what immense plans are formed and steadily developed in action.
