It is fashioned out of the warp and woof of human erience; and into its rich tapestry are interwoven the strands of hope fear, of dream and disillusion, revealing our kinship with past genera 5. When men have pondered deeply the meaning of existence, they 6 invariably sought fellowship with a power greater than their own ch might inform and guide them through the uctuating currents of poral incertitude. In this way religion has joined the interplay of ces which affect the cultural process. Historically, it has given evidence its potency in a host of societies, not the least of which has been the atively young and burgeoning entity known as the United States. It is lt complex and diversified phenomenon known as American religion th which this book purposes to deal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Christianity The heroic discovery of America, at the close of the fifteenth century after Christ, has compelled the generous and just admiration of the world; but the grandeur of human enterprise and achievement in the discovery of the western hemisphere has a less claim on our admiration than that divine Wisdom and controlling providence which, for reasons now manifested, kept the secret hidden through so many millenniums, in spite of continual chances of dis closure, until the fullness of time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of an American Citizen The purpose of this series of loosely con nected chapters is to call attention to some of the influences which direct, and some of the qualities which mark, the religious education of an American citizen. The normal life of an American proceeds from childhood to youth and from youth to manhood, through the shift ing environments of home, school, college, busi ness, citizenship and Church; and at each step he is met by conditions and demands which may either promote or obstruct his religious educa tion. What, then, are the circumstances which are likely to be most favorable for a healthy minded and progressive religious experience? What can be done by parents, teachers, em ployers, statesmen, or pastors, to reinforce American citizenship with a rational religious life? What are the special obstacles which American civilization offers to religious prog ress? What are the traits of the American character on which teachers of religion may most confidently depend? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion Among American Men There is one generalization, in particular, which the evidence in hand makes it necessary to record - the wide spread ignorance on elementary religious matters even of those who professed to be Church members. Perhaps the one exception was among the Roman Catholics. Such a condition as revealed constitutes a grave indictment against the Churches. They have not been true to their teaching commission. It certainly calls for a careful revision of the pulpit message. Christian instruction is our first duty, and on its success depends the effectiveness of exhortation. It has been offered as an objection to this report that it is too gloomy, too pessimistic in tone, offering too little encouragement, and that it may be misleading and thus defeat its object. To this two things may be said. First, the value of such a report lies in its fidelity and honesty. It has not been tampered with nor colored. To the extent that it is true that it sounds pessimistic, it is a valid judgment on much present-day preaching and teaching of religion. We are worse than fools if we are to learn nothing from the war, and if men did not find their faith all we have a right to expect faith to be when shells are exploding and men dying by the thousands, we need not so much examine our faith itself as the form in which we have been expressing it and teaching it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phases of Religion in America: A Course of Lectures My purpose has not been to set forth the peculiarities of the sects but to state the main principles of religious thought and feeling in America. This has not obliged me to introduce all denominations, but only those that are typical, and has left me free to deal with those phases of the religious problem which have not institutionalized. I have retained the license of popular speech granted a lecturer, but I am not aware of such indulgence in any case to the point of injustice. A candid and rem'emberable statement of the facts has been my constant aim. I do not conceal my purposes, which are made clear in the last four chapters, to plead that truth oi religion which overarches all sects and that spiritual experience which underlies them all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Religious Leaders Series It was perhaps not without propriety that I was asked to examine into the elements of his character and teaching, and to compose this book. I was his pupil, his colleague when he was president, and later his colleague in an inverted relation when I became his successor as president of the college, though not immediately following him in this office. My acquaintance with him was not as lengthy as that of some others, but I knew him from widely divergent standpoints, and only by these later years of the anxieties and cares that belong to the presidency of a New England country college have I come to the full understanding and appreciation of the great qualities which marked his career. The estimate which is here presented is the mature estimate of one who has thus had unusual opportunities of knowing him, and of entering into sympathy with his activities. But this will not compensate for the loss of those expressions of his earlier and later inner life of growth which all who knew him would highly value. Nor will it serve to relieve much the lack of that incident which life in a larger community would probably have supplied. One is a kingdom, another an empire, and still another a republic. Also by race. Great Britain is an Anglo-Saxon nation, France a Gallic, Germany a Teutonic, Russia a Slav. And still again by religion. One is a Mohammedan nation, others are heathen, and still others are Christian nations. This republic is classified among the Christian nations of the world. It was so formally declared by the Supreme Court of the United States. In the case of Holy Trinity Church vs. United States, 143 U. S. 471, that court, after mentioning various circumstances, added, "these and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation." It is the same fluid com posed Oi two parts of hydrogen and one of oxygen which everywhere waters the earth. But in one place it comes blue as the heavens from Alpine glaciers; in another, transparent as crystal from mountain springs; in another, yellow with alluvial deposits of the ground it has run over. Justification by faith is the life-giving water of all Christian ages. But many lands gave it color. Dashing down the Alps like the arrowy Rhone; broadening past German hills, like the Rhine; slower and yet broader on the flats of Holland, like the Maas, and springing like unexpected fountains in a hundred flowering fields Of England, - the doctrines of Luther stirred the hope of the world like rivers in the desert to weary travelers.
