The President. - The periodical election of the President of the United States, every four years, by the people, is, and has been, fraught with consequences of the utmost importance to the nation. For some time previous to that event, the masses of the people, either from their natural inclination, the influence of politicians, or the importance of the subject itself, are always stirred up by degrees, as it approaches, until the whole country is in a ferment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Causes of the Civil War in America The Continental Congress, which was the central ad ministrative board during this epoch, was a diet of envoys from sovereign states. It had no power to act on individuals. It could not command the states. It could move only by requisitions and recommendations. Its functions were essentially diplomatic, like those of the states-general of the old Dutch republic, like those of the modern Germanic confederation. Book Synopsis A Documentary History of the American Civil War Era by : Thomas C. Mackey
Download or read book A Documentary History of the American Civil War Era written by Thomas C. Mackey and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Documentary History of the American Civil War Era is the first comprehensive collection of public policy actions, political speeches, and judicial decisions related to the American Civil War. This three-volume set gives scholars and students easy access to the full texts of both the most important, fundamental documents as well as hard-to-find, rarely published primary sources on this critical period in U.S. history. Volume 2 in the series, Political Arguments, presents the words of politicians, political party platforms, and administrative speeches. It is divided into two sections. The first, Voices of the Politicians and Political Parties, comprises the platforms of the major (and some minor) parties from1856 to 1876. Also included are such pieces as Robert E. Lee’s letter of resignation from the U.S. Army, a few key speeches by that rising politician from Illinois, Abraham Lincoln, and a letter on the “American Question” written by a European observer, Karl Marx. Other items include examples of the 1860–1861 state ordinances of secession and addresses on emancipation and Reconstruction by Jefferson Davis and by the Republican leader in the House of Representatives, Thaddeus Stevens. Section two, Voices of the Administrations, contains records from the presidencies of James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, and Rutherford B. Hayes as well as a message from Confederate President Jefferson Davis telling his congress that the Southern cause was “just and holy.” Classic documents such as Lincoln’s announcement of forthcoming emancipation and the Emancipation Proclamation are here, as are lesser-known but important documents such as Francis Lieber’s 1863 revised law code for war, General Order 100, and Attorney General James Speed’s 1865 opinion supporting the Johnson administration’s decision to try the Lincoln murder conspirators by special military commission and not in the civilian courts. Each of the selections in Political Arguments is preceded by editor Thomas Mackey’s introductory headnotes that explain the document’s historical significance and trace its lasting impact. These commentaries provide insight into not just law and public policy but also the broad sweep of issues important to Civil War– era Americans. A Documentary History of the American Civil War Era is an essential acquisition for academic and public libraries in addition to being a valuable resource for courses on the War and Reconstruction, legal history, political history, and nineteenth- century American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War: Its Nature and End If the five Border Slave States (delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Missouri) had stood firmly by the Union - the ten remaining Slave States could hardly have made a show of military resistance to the overwhelming power of the nation, even if they had all seceded, and been unanimous. The white popu lation of the whole ten may be stated, in round numbers, at about four millions, against twenty-four millions in the remaining twen ty-four States. In fact, however, but for the treasonable conduct of the secession minorities in the Border States, and especially but for the outrage perpetrated in Virginia, by means of which the secessionists usurped the control of that State, and sudden 1y threw it into a condition of war with the Federal Govern ment; it is in the highest degree probable, that neither North Car olina, Tennessee, nor Arkansas would have seceded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Civil War and Reconstruction: And Related Topics Of the essays included in this volume all but one - that on "The Process of Reconstruction" - have been published before during the last eleven years: four in the Political Science Quarterly, one in the Yale Review, and one in the "Papers of the American Historical Association. For the purpose of their present appearance all have been subjected to revision, which has resulted in some cases in considerable modifications. The first five essays are devoted immediately to various phases of the Civil War and Reconstruction. The last two, while not concerned exclusively with those topics, have nevertheless such a relation to the legal and political questions treated as to justify their inclusion in the volume. To the younger generation of reading men at the present day the military history of the Civil War is familiar or readily accessible; the constitutional and political history is neither. Taken together, Foner's essays work towards reintegrating the social, political, and intellectual history of the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War in America: An Address Read at the Last Meeting of the Manchester, Union and Emancipation Society I went to the United States believing, I returned firmly convinced, that not democracy in America, but free Chris tianity in America, was the real key to the study of the people and their institutions. Democracy is a political arrangementfdealing, like all political arrangements, with the shallower interests of man. It would be reversing the order of causation to deduce from it the deeper parts of the character of the people. CHAPTER m ADMINISTRATION THE uprising of the Northern people, after the attack on Fort Sumter, ought to be one of the most instructive, as it was perhaps the most surprising and impressive, scenes in the whole history of representative government. The South had the harder part, in that it had to do, --to act on a conviction inbred for two generations; and its act would break in pieces a system of government which had been the hope and the admiration of the civilized world. On the other hand, the action of the North must proceed from a belief in the indissoluble substance of the Union, --a Websterian conception rendered into the consciousness of the least citizen, --a belief that must issue in action, of necessity sacrificing fife and property. The Soutfi knew what it would have--the right to hold slaves at all hazards. The North felt that the Union must be preserved--but how and when?1, 1 "Slavery was undoubtedly the immediate fomenting cause of the woful American conflict.... But slavery was far from being the sole cause of the prolonged conflict. Neither its destruction on the one hand, nor its defense on the other, was the energizing force that held the contending armies to four years of bloody work. If all living Union soldiers were summoned to the witness-stand, every one of them would testify that it was the preservation of the American Union and not the destruction of Southern slavery that induced him to volunteer at the call of his country."--Confederate General John B. Gordon, Reminiscences of the Civil War, p. 19. There was a virtual interregnum from March 4 to April 15. The North was not deliberating, "it was hesitating its opinion." During this pause of the storm, while war and peace pervaded the whole threatening atmosphere, ...
