Book excerpt: This is a book about prime numbers, congruences, secret messages, and elliptic curves that you can read cover to cover. It grew out of undergr- uate courses that the author taught at Harvard, UC San Diego, and the University of Washington. The systematic study of number theory was initiated around 300B. C. when Euclid proved that there are in?nitely many prime numbers, and also cleverly deduced the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, which asserts that every positive integer factors uniquely as a product of primes. Over a thousand years later (around 972A. D. ) Arab mathematicians formulated the congruent number problem that asks for a way to decide whether or not a given positive integer n is the area of a right triangle, all three of whose sides are rational numbers. Then another thousand years later (in 1976), Di?e and Hellman introduced the ?rst ever public-key cryptosystem, which enabled two people to communicate secretely over a public communications channel with no predetermined secret; this invention and the ones that followed it revolutionized the world of digital communication. In the 1980s and 1990s, elliptic curves revolutionized number theory, providing striking new insights into the congruent number problem, primality testing, publ- key cryptography, attacks on public-key systems, and playing a central role in Andrew Wiles’ resolution of Fermat’s Last Theorem.

International perspectives on program development and delivery offer fresh approaches to conceptualizing a school’s particular bullying problems and creating effective policy. In addition, chapters cover program evaluation, guiding principles for evaluators, measurement methods, and documenting and disseminating findings. The book also provides recommendations for program development. Topics featured in this book include: An Adlerian approach to predicting bullying behavior. Bibliotherapy as a strategy for bullying prevention. Coaching teachers in bullying detection and intervention. Cyberbullying prevention and intervention. The “Coping with Bullying” program in Greek secondary schools. Factors that affect reporting victimization in South African schools. Book excerpt: This report investigates how Australians are using interactive gambling services and the impact of such online gambling on non-online gambling and gambling related problems. Interactive gambling is a joint term capturing gaming and wagering on the Internet. A research study was conducted over three years and included a nationally representative telephone survey of 15,006 people, an online survey of 4,594 gamblers, interviews with 81 interactive gamblers, and data from gambling help services. This study provides a baseline of who, what, when, why and how people gamble, using interactive technology in Australia.

Book excerpt: A central goal of transportation is the delivery of safe and efficient services with minimal environmental impact. In practice, though, human mobility has flourished while nature has suffered. Awareness of the environmental impacts of roads is increasing, yet information remains scarce for those interested in studying, understanding, or minimizing the ecological effects of roads and vehicles. Road Ecology addresses that shortcoming by elevating previously localized and fragmented knowledge into a broad and inclusive framework for understanding and developing solutions. The book brings together fourteen leading ecologists and transportation experts to articulate state-of-the-science road ecology principles, and presents specific examples that demonstrate the application of those principles. Diverse theories, concepts, and models in the new field of road ecology are integrated to establish a coherent framework for transportation policy, planning, and projects. Topics examined include: foundations of road ecology roads, vehicles, and transportation planning vegetation and roadsides wildlife populations and mitigation water, sediment, and chemical flows aquatic ecosystems wind, noise, and atmospheric effects road networks and landscape fragmentation Road Ecology links ecological theories and concepts with transportation planning, engineering, and travel behavior. With more than 100 illustrations and examples from around the world, it is an indispensable and pioneering work for anyone involved with transportation, including practitioners and planners in state and province transportation departments, federal agencies, and nongovernmental organizations. The book also opens up an important new research frontier for ecologists.
