Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although aimed at non US residents there is also a wealth of information for all Americans wishing for their own RV. Delve into this mine of practical information: the book covers a wide range of topics including buying, registering, keeping, and maintaining your motorhome, alongside the more exciting bits of where to go and how to choose your campsites. Colleen and her engineer husband, Alan, have travelled extensively in the last 4 years through the USA in a 30' motorhome. So what? Lots of people are travelling like that in America! The difference is that they live in Europe and had to learn to cope with the difficulties of owning an RV from afar. At first it seemed an impossible thing to do but with determination and the help of the internet they solved all the problems. Now they are able to spend two to three months, twice a year, meandering in their own time through rural America. Extraordinarily satisfying.Although an apparently expensive project, the fact that they spend most of their time "boondocking" (free camping in gorgeous places) makes the whole thing affordable. The vehicle is always stored within reach of an international airport for when they have to return to Europe. To remain in a serviceable state ready for their next trip a great deal of thought and planning has been given to the whole project. This book is the product of their gathered experience. Hopefully you will find it useful and maybe it will give you the incentive to try the same thing ... the joys of having time to "stop and stare" cannot be measured. Try it!

Delve into this detailed handbook covering a wide range of topics including buying, registering, keeping, and maintaining your motorhome, alongside the more exciting bits of where to go and how to choose your campsites, along with many photos and diagrams. Colleen and her engineer husband, Alan, have travelled extensively in the last 4 years through the USA in a 30' motorhome. So what? Lots of people are traveling like that in America ... but not many Europeans! So for them at first it seemed an impossible thing to do but, with determination and the help of the internet, they solved the problems. Now they are able to spend two to three months, twice a year, meandering in their own time through rural America. Extraordinarily satisfying. Although an apparently expensive project, the fact that they spend most of their time "boondocking" (free camping in gorgeous places) makes the whole thing affordable. To keep the RV in a faraway storage facility, primed and ready for the next trip, took a great deal of head scratching and planning. Book excerpt: The inspiration for Chloé Zhao's 2020 Golden Lion award-winning film starring Frances McDormand. "People who thought the 2008 financial collapse was over a long time ago need to meet the people Jessica Bruder got to know in this scorching, beautifully written, vivid, disturbing (and occasionally wryly funny) book." —Rebecca Solnit From the beet fields of North Dakota to the campgrounds of California to Amazon’s CamperForce program in Texas, employers have discovered a new, low-cost labor pool, made up largely of transient older adults. These invisible casualties of the Great Recession have taken to the road by the tens of thousands in RVs and modified vans, forming a growing community of nomads. Nomadland tells a revelatory tale of the dark underbelly of the American economy—one which foreshadows the precarious future that may await many more of us. At the same time, it celebrates the exceptional resilience and creativity of these Americans who have given up ordinary rootedness to survive, but have not given up hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dream Hoarders sparked a national conversation on the dangerous separation between the upper middle class and everyone else. Now in paperback and newly updated for the age of Trump, Brookings Institution senior fellow Richard Reeves is continuing to challenge the class system in America. In America, everyone knows that the top 1 percent are the villains. The rest of us, the 99 percent—we are the good guys. Not so, argues Reeves. The real class divide is not between the upper class and the upper middle class: it is between the upper middle class and everyone else. The separation of the upper middle class from everyone else is both economic and social, and the practice of “opportunity hoarding”—gaining exclusive access to scarce resources—is especially prevalent among parents who want to perpetuate privilege to the benefit of their children. While many families believe this is just good parenting, it is actually hurting others by reducing their chances of securing these opportunities. There is a glass floor created for each affluent child helped by his or her wealthy, stable family. That glass floor is a glass ceiling for another child. Throughout Dream Hoarders, Reeves explores the creation and perpetuation of opportunity hoarding, and what should be done to stop it, including controversial solutions such as ending legacy admissions to school. He offers specific steps toward reducing inequality and asks the upper middle class to pay for it. Convinced of their merit, members of the upper middle class believes they are entitled to those tax breaks and hoarded opportunities. After all, they aren't the 1 percent. The national obsession with the super rich allows the upper middle class to convince themselves that they are just like the rest of America. In Dream Hoarders, Reeves argues that in many ways, they are worse, and that changes in policy and social conscience are the only way to fix the broken system.

Book excerpt: Second homes have become an increasingly important component of both tourism and housing studies. They can directly and indirectly contribute a significant number of domestic and international visitors to destinations and may be part of longer-term retirement, lifestyle and amenity migration that can have significant economic and social effects on communities and destination development. This volume offers an overview of different disciplinary and methodological approaches to second homes while simultaneously providing a broad geographical reach. Divided into four parts exploring governance, development, community and mobile second homes, the book provides a contemporary account of the major issues in an area of growing international interest. This timely handbook covers a wide range of dimensions – from planning to the role of second homes in development and the management of their impact. The international and cross-disciplinary nature of the contributions will be of interest to numerous academic fields in the social sciences, as well as urban and regional planners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark publication brings together some of the most perceptive commentators of the present moment to explore core ideas and cutting edge developments in the field of Leisure Studies. It offers important new insights into the dynamics of the transformation of leisure in contemporary societies, tracing the emergent issues at stake in the discipline and examining Leisure Studies’ fundamental connections with cognate disciplines such as Sociology, Cultural Studies, History, Sport Studies and Tourism. This book contains original work from key scholars across the globe, including those working outside the Leisure Studies mainstream. It showcases the state of the art of contemporary Leisure Studies, covering key topics and key thinkers from the psychology of leisure to leisure policy, from Bourdieu to Baudrillard, and suggests that leisure in the 21st century should be understood as centring on a new ‘Big Seven’ (holidays, drink, drugs, sex, gambling, TV and shopping). No other book has gone as far in redefining the identity of the discipline of Leisure Studies, or in suggesting how the substantive ideas of Leisure Studies need to be rethought. The Routledge Handbook of Leisure Studies should therefore be the intellectual guide of first choice for all scholars, academics, researchers and students working in this subject area.
