Book excerpt: "In Sheila Metzner's photographs, beauty is truly more than skin-deep. She is known for creating rich and refined images for the fashion and television industries, and her textural surfaces and attention to aesthetics have made her work popular since the 1970s, with clients as diverse as Fendi, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, and Victoria's Secret. Recasting history for her own demands, Metzner hovers between the pictorialist aesthetic of Alfred Stieglitz or Edward Steichen and the modernist edge of such photographers as Man Ray and Charles Sheeler. The end results, while paying homage, are uniquely Metzner's own and have left a major impression on the history of photography." "Form and Fashion presents a generous commingling of Metzner's fashion work with her sensual and erotic nudes and formalist still lifes created between 1980 and 2000. The effect of this retrospective juxtaposition suggests a heady romanticism balanced by her precisionist style and sense of detail. Form and Fashion presents the singularity of a creative mind, showcasing for the very first time images that resound on their own terms with elegance and distinction."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich compendium of masterworks from the golden age of printmaking In the 1500s, the printed image functioned as a tool for storytelling. In addition to being vehicles for Christian subjects, engravings, etchings and woodcuts introduced many Europeans to the myths and aesthetics of Greco-Roman antiquity. These innovative printmaking technologies ensured the widespread distribution of figural motifs that fueled the development of Mannerism, which became the dominant style of the Late Renaissance. Mannerism privileged theatrical effects, a unique ideal of beauty and a collapsed perspective, characteristics that especially lent themselves to print reproduction. Renaissance Impressions offers a rich survey of this golden age of printmaking through a selection of works from the Kirk Edward Long Collection, one of the world's most extensive private collections of 16th-century prints, with pieces by Michelangelo, Raphael and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, eight contemporary scholars examine the rich diversity in the subject, style, and geography of printmaking from 1913-1947, a singular period of artistic creation. Also, three distinguished printmakers, who were active during the 1930s and 1940s, share their recollections of those decades, offering rare, firsthand accounts of the political, social, and cultural elements that influenced the artists and their work. David Tatham has chosen two watershed events, the Armory Show of 1913 and the important Brooklyn Museum exhibition of 1947, as the temporal bookends for this collection. Recognizing this era as wholly distinct from what had gone before and what was to come after it in graphic arts, the volume’s contributors illuminate the period’s spirited and vital debate about style, content, and the role of prints in society. Offering fresh assessments and newly understood historical contexts, the essays bring well-deserved attention to artists whose work has often been neglected, while it reexamines the works of well-known artists. This volume represents an important contribution to the study of printmaking by illustrating the way in which historical and contemporary graphic arts occupy a vital and central presence in the culture of our times.

In a career spanning five decades, he illustrated more than 20 books, including his masterpiece, Birds of the World, as well as classic bird guides: Birds of North America, Birds of Europe, and The Hamlyn Guide to Birds of Britain and Europe. Singer joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and was assigned to Company C of the 603rd Camouflage Engineers. Upon his return to the U.S., he worked briefly in an advertising agency and became a full-time illustrator and artist in 1955. During the 1980s, assisted by his son, Alan, Singer's paintings of state birds were seen by millions when the U.S. Postal Service issued the State Birds & Flowers postage stamps. The stamps became one of the largest selling commemoratives in U.S. Postal history. He received the Hal Borland Award in 1985 from the National Audubon Society. His paintings are represented in several public and private collections in the United States and Europe. Since his death in 1990, retrospectives of Singer's artwork have been presented in several museums and art galleries across the U.S. PAUL SINGER has focused on designs for zoos, museums, and botanic gardens. He has worked as an interpretive sign designer for the National Park Service and his illustrations are included inThe Knopf Nature Guide series for Audubon, The Audubon Master Guides to Birding, The Knopf Collector Guides to American Antiques and other publications. ALAN SINGER is a graduate of The Cooper Union School of Art and worked with his father, Arthur, on painting revisions to both of Singer's field guides to birds, and helped illustrate the State Bird & Flower Stamps for the U.S. Postal Service.
