As the war began to swing in favour of the Allies, it became clear that no final defeat of the Third Reich would be possible until the armoured monsters of the Panzerwaffe were defeated. But who would, or even could, take on the mighty Tigers and Panthers, just a handful of which could stop entire formations in their tracks? The answer lay with the formation of a new type of unit, the Tank Destroyer Battalion. This is the story of the men and machines that made up the very first Tank Destroyer Battalion, the 601st, from their unique training and formation, to the final, desperate battles in the heart of Nazi Germany. Packed with rare material, letters, diaries and previously unpublished photographs, and now available in paperback, this is an intense and intimate chronicle of the men who fought the Panzers in an astonishing 10 campaigns and 546 days of lethal combat.

Book excerpt: Bill Eddy knew the Arabs and the Middle East better than any other American of the 20th century, and the work of his eventful life helped to establish the United States as the dominant strategic power in the region. Born in Lebanon, he spoke Arabic like a native. He was a Marine Corps hero of World War I, a prominent scholar of classical English literature, a brilliant spymaster in North Africa during the Allied landings there in World War II, and a major player in the Washington power games that led to the creation of the CIA. He was the impresario of President Franklin Roosevelt's landmark meeting with King Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia in 1945, and his work as the senior U.S. diplomat in Jeddah cemented the improbable alliance of the United States and the desert kingdom. To know his story is to understand why the United States today is an indispensable force in the Arab world--for better or worse. -- Jacket flap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "American Knights Series III" is subtitled "Miles Knight: The Saboteur." This book continues the historical, ancestral life of the author's 5th Great Grandfather who came to the American Colonies as an indentured servant in 1767 and subsequently became a husband, a father and a successful landowner/farmer. Having freed all the slaves he inherited with the purchase of Shiloh Plantation in Georgia, Miles Knight and his wife, Mary succeed in teaching all their former slaves who chose to be their black servants, to read and write. When Miles is called upon by the Continental Army to be an agent of sabotage for America, he hand selects 7 of the black servants who have been trained for special warfare. "Miles Knight: The Saboteur" depicts life and warfare in the days of the American Patriots as they fought against all odds and the mighty British Empire, to gain their freedom and independence from the oppressive policies of Great Britain, including unfair taxation and lack of representation in the Kings Court and the British Parliament. Book 3 also helps the reader to understand the difficulties of travel and communication in that heavily forested and vast land of colonial America. The reader's will be made privy to the daily lives of the sparsely populated countryside. The tools, food, housing, weapons and methods of making a living are brought forth in some detail. "Miles Knight: The Saboteur" focuses on the 'Battle of Moore's Creek' in and around Wilmington, North Carolina. Miles Knight's contribution to that effort is told in great detail. Relations with Native Indians and Negro Slaves is dealt with from the standpoint of kind, considerate and loving Christian actions. 'The Knights' of Colonial American, having been mistreated in Ireland for centuries by Great Britain, are quick to aid in freeing, educating and socializing with any and all people who are dominated and abused by those in power. This Book III of the American Knights Series promises to entertain and involve the reader.

Book excerpt: In 1860, during their first attempt to create the Golden Circle, several thousand Knights assembled in southern Texas to "colonize" the northern Mexico. Due to insufficient resources and organizational shortfalls, however, that filibuster failed. Later, the Knights shifted their focus and began pushing for disunion, spearheading prosecession rallies, and intimidating Unionists in the South. They appointed regional military commanders from the ranks of the South's major political and military figures, including men such as Elkanah Greer of Texas, Paul J. Semmes of Georgia, Robert C. Tyler of Maryland, and Virginius D. Groner of Virginia. Followers also established allies with the South's rabidly prosecession "fire-eaters," which included individuals such as Barnwell Rhett, Louis Wigfall, Henry Wise, and William Yancy.

Book excerpt: American Knights Series II "Miles Knight: The Patriot" This book is historical and ancestral; Miles Knight, the 5th GGrandfather (circa 1747) of author Lance Knight came to the American Colonies as an indentured servant. His indenture contract was purchased by a gentleman tobacco farmer named John Mead from Connecticut. Mr. Mead ultimately adopted the young, Miles Knight, into the Mead family who had years before adopted an English baby name Mary Ingles. Miles and Mary fell in love and were married in 1771, at which time John Mead gave them a 200 acre farm in North Carolina, as a wedding present. He also gave them a black slave by the name of Big Boy. Miles immediately freed Big Boy and asked him to come south with them to North Carolina where they created a fine plantation from the acreage. American and ancestral history is woven into this fictional account of the life and times of Miles and Mary Knight. The tapestry reveals the kinds of lives colonial Americans experienced as they were suffering high taxes and other excesses at the hands of the British. Even though much of the American citizenry was sparsely populated in remote farms and villages, the siren call of American Patriots grew louder and they resisted more violently the aggression of the British Army and Navy. The Americans who were loyal (Loyalists) to the Crown were ostracized and hated by the Patriots as traitors because they worked and fought on the side of England. So even with the success Miles, Mary and Big Boy had with the new farm/plantation, they were being inexorably drawn into the conflict. John Mead became Brigadier General John Mead per appointment by Thomas Jefferson. Miles was inducted in the 10th North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Army by John Mead. The reader will experience the mystery, the fighting, the indecision and the joys of these young American Knights as they firmly plant their lives into the soil and the pride of the American fight for freedom and independence from a repressive, domineering, occupying force called the British Empire.

Book excerpt: This is the first book in a series entitled "American Knights." Most of the stories are true, but some liberties have been taken to fill in the gaps between known dates and verified incidents. The first leg of our journey back in time centers on Miles Knight, born in Ireland in the year 1747. For the first 17 years Miles lived a fairly normal life before it was turned upside down. In 1764, when three men murdered Miles's mother, father and two brothers, 17 year old Miles vowed to bring the men to justice. After selling the family farm Miles trailed the men across Ireland, eventually catching up to them and seeing to it that justice was served. Having heard tales about a 'new world' called America, Miles signed an Indentured Servant contract with the captain of the ship, HMS Magnificent. Surviving the treacherous journey to the American Colonies, Miles' contract was purchased by landowner John Mead; a tobacco farmer and a good and loving family man. Finding Miles to be a strong and decent young man, John and his wife included him as a member of their family when the census was taken, but felt he should keep the Knight surname. With the clouds of war hanging over the land, Miles found love and married the Mead's adopted daughter, Mary. Given 200 acres of farmland in North Carolina, Miles and Mary, along with an ex-slave named Big Boy, struck out to start their life together in a yet untamed wilderness.

Book excerpt: This is the second book in the American Knight series. This book deals with Miles Knight moving his growing family from North Carolina to Georgia, due to his killing of a local sheriff. Although the killing was in self defense Miles knows that his only hope of avoiding prosecution is to move away from the area. When he and Mary, his wife, went to look at a plantation that was for sale in Georgia they both fell in love with it immediately. As the rumblings of discontent increased among the colonists and the Tories made life for them more and more difficult, Miles could see that war was inevitable. Not only did he and his family have to face the hardships of making the move to Georgia, but Mother Nature dealt them a blow when a tornado roared through the land. This is an exciting read for the history buff as the authors take you on an excursion back to the days of our forefathers declaring their independence from a repressive England. It is the expressed wish of the authors that God will bless America again. And God knows we need it.

Book excerpt: From the author of national bestsellers The Bedford Boys and The Longest Winter comes "a rousing tale of little-known heroes" (Booklist). The Few tells the dramatic and unforgettable story of eight young Americans who joined Britain's Royal Air Force, defying their country's neutrality laws and risking their U.S. citizenship to fight side-by-side with England's finest pilots in the summer of 1940-over a year before America entered the war. Flying the lethal and elegant Spitfire, they became "knights of the air" and with minimal training but plenty of guts, they dueled the skilled and fearsome pilots of Germany's Luftwaffe. By October 1940, they had helped England win the greatest air battle in the history of aviation. Winston Churchill once said of all those who fought in the Battle of Britain, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." These daring Americans were the few among the "few." Now, with the narrative drive and human drama that made The Bedford Boys and The Longest Winter national bestsellers, Alex Kershaw tells their story for the first time.

Book excerpt: On the great influence of a valiant lord: "The companions, who see that good warriors are honored by the great lords for their prowess, become more determined to attain this level of prowess." On the lady who sees her knight honored: "All of this makes the noble lady rejoice greatly within herself at the fact that she has set her mind and heart on loving and helping to make such a good knight or good man-at-arms." On the worthiest amusements: "The best pastime of all is to be often in good company, far from unworthy men and from unworthy activities from which no good can come." Enter the real world of knights and their code of ethics and behavior. Read how an aspiring knight of the fourteenth century would conduct himself and learn what he would have needed to know when traveling, fighting, appearing in court, and engaging fellow knights. Composed at the height of the Hundred Years War by Geoffroi de Charny, one of the most respected knights of his age, A Knight's Own Book of Chivalry was designed as a guide for members of the Company of the Star, an order created by Jean II of France in 1352 to rival the English Order of the Garter. This is the most authentic and complete manual on the day-to-day life of the knight that has survived the centuries, and this edition contains a specially commissioned introduction from historian Richard W. Kaeuper that gives the history of both the book and its author, who, among his other achievements, was the original owner of the Shroud of Turin.
