Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Jewish Year Book, 5668: September 9, 1907, to September 25, 1908 The first place in this preface is due to those through whose cordial co-operation the book became a possibility. The two Directories of Jewish Organizations in the United States, which make up the bulk of the present issue of the American Jewish Year Book, could not have been compiled without the assistance of the scores of individuals who willingly and in some instances voluntarily assumed the task of completing the list of organizations previously available in cities and towns throughout the country. To one who, like the undersigned, has participated in two compilations of Jewish Directories, the more widespread co-operation elicited by the second undertaking is testimony to a heightened sentiment of solidarity among American Jews, a share in producing which, it is not too much to say, may be claimed by the first Directory, of seven years ago. On the other hand, the second attempt herewith made to marshall the forces of American Jewry, is ocular demonstration of the need for further and completer organization, to which the data here presented, in spite or because of their inadequacy at some points, will again, it is hoped, contribute their share.
