Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Jewish Historical Quarterly, Vol. 23 The object of this Society is to collect and publish material bearing upon the history of America, and to promote the study of Jewish history in general, preferably so far as the same is related to American Jewish history or connected with the causes of emigration from various parts of the world to this continent. It is known that Jews in Spain and Portugal lent no inconsiderable aid to the voyages that led to the discovery of America, that a few accompanied the earliest discoverers and that Jews were among the first settlers on this continent, and in its adjacent islands. Considerable numbers saw service in the Colonial and Revolutionary wars, some of them with great distinction. Others contributed liberally to the Continental treasury, at critical periods, to aid in the establishment of Independence. Since the foundation of our government, Jews have played an active part in the political affairs of the country, and have been called upon to hold important public positions. The records of the achievements of these men will, when gathered together, prove of value and interest to the historian, and perchance cast light upon some obscure parts of the history of our country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Jewish Historical Quarterly: Organized at New York, June 7, 1982 The Jews have been Specially active as colonizers, not because Of innate restlessness nor because of a commercial Spirit, but because in countries where they have suffered most from restrictions and persecutions they have been among the first to avail of this avenue of escape from tyranny and go to the remotest unsettled portions of the world to enjoy liberties denied to them at home. The Jews and commerce are found continually associated in foreign and colonial trade, not because the Jews were continually in search for new highways Of commerce, but because commerce and the Jews, the former by natural laws and the latter by artificial laws followed the path of least restriction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society, 1920, Vol. 27 The present volume, however, presents the real work of the Rev. J. J. Lyons, for it contains the result of his inde fatigable industry in collecting material on American Jewish history. In order to obtain data, Mr. Lyons in the course of many years examined thousands of volumes on American local history, entering his finds in a number of note books, in addition to which he collected original documents wherever available as well as rare pamphlets and newspaper clippings. As stated in the introduction to the first volume, the result of these labors remained hidden from the world for many years, so that a very large portion of his sources was discovered independently by other workers in the same field, and had been published in our Publications before the work of Mr. Lyons was placed within the reach of scholars by the generous gift of his children. Despite this fact, however, there still re mained so much material, part of which is entirely new, while the rest is valuable as amplifying material already published, that the present volume will be found to be a useful source book for workers in this field. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1893 edition. Excerpt: ..."Wednesday, April 10, 1776. Resolved, That it be referred to captain George Morgan, Eneas Mackay, Esq., and, captain John Neville, to adjust and determine all matters of difference between Coquataginta, or Captain White-Eyes, and Messrs. Bernard Gratz and Michael Gratz; and that the arbitrators, in case either of the parties to whom it is recommended to submit to their award, shall refuse to abide thereby, report the reasons of such refusal, with a state of the case, and any other matters they shall think fit, to Congress." And again, in August, 1776, the committee of treasury reports that "there is due to Michael Gratz for Indian Goods provided by him in May and June last, and delivered to the commissioners for Indian affairs in the northern department, 653 dollars and ggths," which is ordered to be paid. This resolution appointing a board of arbitration and making Congress a court of last resort has a special significance. While Congress, as has been stated, assumed and exercised sovereign power, yet its resolutions in great part take the form of recommendations to the States to carry out what had been resolved upon as expedient. As to Indian affairs there was no power higher. None but a centralized body could legislate in regard to this matter which concerned all so intimately, and Congress from the beginning undertook the task of looking after Indian affairs and of settling territorial disputes. Another individual of enterprise is Mr. Samuel de Lucena. He endeavored to take advantage of the inducements offered by Congress to those engagingin the manufacture of saltpetre and the search after sulphur. So in May, 1776, he has a petition presented, which was read and referred to the committee having such matters in...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society, Vol. 1: Papers Presented at the First Scientific Meeting, Held at Philadelphia, December 15, 1892 That the Trustees were justified in condemning and rebuk ing the irregularity, disobedience, and contumacy of Messrs. Suasso, Salvador, and Da Costa, cannot be questioned. That it was entirely prudent and proper in them to claim and exercise the right of selecting colonists for the plantation, is equally certain. That they alone possessed the power of determining who should seek homes in Georgia, and of bind ing applicants in advance to a due Observance of prescribed rules, was a privilege conferred by the terms of the charter. That they were justified in recalling the commissions sealed in favor Of Messrs. Suasso, Salvador, and Da Costa, all will admit. And yet Mr. Oglethorpe was right in disregarding the illiberal instructions Of the Trustees, and in receiving these people and according them homes in Savannah. Some of them removed to South Carolina, but others remained in Savannah, and their descendants may this day be found in that city occupying positions of trust, respectability, and influence.
