This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of Native American folklore, retold for children and young adults, compiled over a century ago. Within you will find stories like Snowbird and the Water Tiger, The Coyote or Prairie Wolf, How Mad Buffalo Fought the Thunder-Bird, The Red Swan, The Bended Rocks and many more. You will even find a description of Iagoo the storyteller. This is the second edition of this book, which was originally published in 1895 and titled Snow Bird and the Water Tiger and other American Indian Tales. The uncredited illustrations are nice examples of children's book art from the period. The compiler, probably not a Native American herself, drew on authentic lore from a wide variety of culture regions, but sprinkled in stereotypical language and anomalous items from the woodland area like "squaw," "papoose," "wigwam". However, the author was obviously well-intentioned and, for her time, appears to have had a fairly progressive attitude. Notably, she preserves some of the motifs in the stories such as grotesque monsters and cross-dressing, which some other children's book authors of her day (and ours) might have glossed over. YESTERDAY'S BOOKS FOR TODAY'S CHARITIES 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities. ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Iagoo, Story-Teller Himself, Snowbird, Water-Tiger, Coyote, Prairie Wolf, How Mad Buffalo Fought the Thunder-Bird, Red Swan, Bended Rocks, White Hawk, Lazy, Magic Feather, Star Maiden, Fighting Hare, Great Head, Adventures of Living Statue, Turtle-Dove, Sage-Cock, Witch, Island of Skeletons, Stone-Shirt, One-Two, Great Wizard, White Cloud, Visit, Sun-Prince

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1895 and again in 1907, American Indian Fairytales is a collection compiled for children and young adults. Originally published under the title Snow Bird and the Water Tiger and other American Indian Tales, this volume includes 17 stories of magical feathers, fighting hares, an island of skeletons, great wizards, and bended rocks. A description of the Iagoo, the teller of the stories contained in this book, also waits within. The author, Margaret Compton, drew on authentic lore and anthropological research from a wide variety of sources, including the Smithsonian Institute and US government reports. Markedly, she retains some of the most colourful story elements, such as grotesque monsters and cross-dressing characters, which some other authors and publishers of her day (and possibly ours) might have omitted. She further maintained the authenticity of the works by sprinkling throughout stereotypical language references of the time, including "squaw," "papoose," and "wigwam." American Indian Fairytales also provides an interesting window into the attitudes of the past; we encourage readers to think upon how attitudes have changed in the century since this book was originally published. So join with us and journey back to a time when these stories were told around campfires, to the delight of young and old alike. A percentage of the net sale will be donated to the American Indian Education Fund.

Book excerpt: With no written language and living in the Lake Superior, American Indians shared tales passed down through the ages. Though the tile suggest the stories are fairy tales, the stories were used to pass along the collective wisdom of the tribes in which they were shared. In the 1830s, ethnologist Henry R. Schoolcraft learned the language of these people and went out to collect and to preserve the stories before the tribes disappeared. Schoolcraft is also known for his major six-volume study of Native Americans published in the 1850s. With one exception, all the tales in this book are adapted from the legends collected by Henry R. Schoolcraft, ethnologist and government agent for the Lake Superior country, and published in 1839 with the title, "Algic Researches."

This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 22 “Why” stories from the Blackfeet, Chippewa, and Cree tribes were handed down from father to son, with little variation, through countless generations. These 22 stories were used to teach the young ones about the environment in which they lived but also the lessons of life. But the time of the tribal story-teller has passed, and only here and there is to be found a patriarch who loves the legends from the old days. This book is an attempt to ensure that these memories are forever on record and never lost to future generations. Herein you will find the stories of: Why The Chipmunk's Back Is Striped How The Ducks Got Their Fine Feathers Why The Kingfisher Always Wears A War-Bonnet Why The Curlew's Bill Is Long And Crooked Old-Man Remakes The World Why Blackfeet Never Kill Mice How The Otter Skin Became Great "Medicine" Old-Man Steals The Sun's Leggings Old-Man And His Conscience Old-Man's Treachery Why The Night-Hawk's Wings Are Beautiful Why The Mountain-Lion Is Long And Lean The Fire-Leggings The Moon And The Great Snake Why The Deer Has No Gall Why The Indians Whip The Buffalo-Berries From The Bushes Old-Man And The Fox Why The Birch-Tree Wears The Slashes In Its Bark Mistakes Of Old-Man How The Man Found His Mate Dreams Retrospection This volume was written and recorded in a time when the great Northwest was rapidly becoming a settled country. With the passing of the traditional ways of the Indian, much of the America’s aboriginal folk-lore, rich in its fairy-like characters, and its relation to the lives of its native people, has been lost. There is a wide difference between folk-lore of the so-called Old World and that of America. The folk-stories of our European ancestors, transmitted orally through countless generations, show many evidences of distortion and of change in material particulars; but the American Indian seems to have been too fond of nature and too proud of tradition to have forgotten or changed the teachings of his forefathers. Like Polynesian folklore, they have changed little and have a childlike in simplicity, beginning with creation itself, and reaching to the whys and wherefores of nature's moods and eccentricities, these tales impress as being well worth saving.
