Theoretically and practically, we have rejected, and we do now reject, that wholesale bloodletting which has made up a large share of the treatment of allopathists in all acute diseases. Only a few years since, bloodletting was the rule with the thousands of physicians and writers of this country and of the fatherland. How foolish would any of us have been regarded, twenty years ago, if we had publicly pre dicted that in 1866, bloodletting would not be the general practice in fevers and infiammatiousl But we have kept our faith, our practice has proved itself the right practice, and allopathists themselves do not resort to bleeding in one tenth of the cases in which they formerly did. The teachers of allopathy, the professors in their colleges, still advocate this fatal barbarism, and their graduates far too frequently resort to it. But the common sense of the people, and the superior success of eclectic physicians, have brought the practice into disgraceful contempt, in the honest minds of the American people. Surely, this is a change and a tri umph! A change by which thousands of lives are saved every year, and a triumph to every eclectic who has been struggling for a right to live and to be honored through these twenty years past. And yet allopathic writers, when they prepare articles for their medical journals, or write works on the practice of medicine, like Dr. Flint, recommend bloodletting, though with much discrimination; and England and Scotland have many among her foremost men who hke J. Hughes Bennett, discard almost entirely the lancet. But the profes sors in the medical colleges of New York and Philadelphia the two great centres of medical education in this country all unite in recommending bloodletting; and their satellites, in all the allopathic medical chaim of the land, echo these sentiments from their halls of collegiate instruction. The hypothesis pro pounded here, it seems to us, accounts fully and satisfactorily for the remarkable phenomena. They pertain, we doubt not, rather to the department of psychology than of physiology as the lat ter science is usually taught and understood, and are closely allied to the modern mesmeric or spiritual Operations in which the will of one person is able to steady, or disturb, or even para lyze the nerves and muscular system of another. Many of the problems of insanity are also thus to be explained. An individ ual, through disease, disappointment, anxiety, self-indulgence, mental idleness, the disturbing influence of others, becomes more or less unable to control or direct his own actions his strength is reduced or abnormally excited, and he is rendered morally impotent and imbecile. Almost any man can be made insane by the interference of others with his exercise of his own will and free agency. Medical science has been greatly at fault in this matter, and jurisprudence has fallen short of occupying legitimately its province of action. During the past year it has occurred epidemically over an ever widening territory. Dr. W. H. Frost, of the Marine Hospital Service, after a long series of investigations, is unable to assign any positive cause for the peculiar disease. It is thought by some investigators that the disease will break out with virulence next year. It has been stated by a number of physicians of a considerable experience that this not very well understood disease is best man aged by careful quarantine and the administration of form'in for its specific action on the cerebro-spinal fluid, the dose to be regulated according to the age of the patient. Of course the use of formin does not exclude the employment of such other remedies as may be indicated by the symptoms.
