Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental treatment and management goals in diabetes mellitus are to control and normalize blood glucose levels and to prevent diabetic complications. It also includes maintaining normal growth and development and normal body weight. Proper diet, regular exercise, weight control and different therapeutic agents are the mainstays of diabetic care and management. Weight reduction and exercise have been shown to improve tissue sensitivity to insulin and allow its proper use by target tissues. It is obvious that medical management and goals of therapy for diabetes mellitus have changed since the publication of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial in 1993. Recent studies have shown that the risk of developing retinopathy can decrease by 76% in properly managed diabetic patients when compared to control group and that clinical and laboratory signs and symptoms of nephropathy and neuropathy can also decrease by 54 to 60%. Modern approaches to the management of diabetes mellitus embrace holistic options and this book addressed various approaches in the management of diabetes mellitus.

Book excerpt: The diabetes mellitus epidemic is unfolding across the globe with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting a worldwide prevalence of 177 million patients with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately ninety percent of all diabetes cases. Long-term complications of type 2 diabetes include atherosclerosis, heart disease, stroke, end-stage renal disease, retinopathy leading to blindness, nerve damage, sexual dysfunction, frequent infections, and difficult-to-treat foot ulcers, sometimes resulting in lower limb amputation. Diabetics are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease or have a stroke, two to six times more likely to have transient ischemic attacks, and fifteen to forty times more likely to require lower-limb amputation compared with the general population. In 2002, the total economic cost of diabetes was estimated to be $132 billion accounting for one in every ten health care dollars spent in the United States. As a direct consequence of this economic impact and in light of the fact that current approved therapies fail to provide adequate therapeutic advantage in preventing hyperglycemia, industry has been heavily focused on addressing new fundamental cellular mechanisms that will potentially address this unmet need. New Therapeutic Strategies for Type 2 Diabetes provides the reader with the most comprehensive survey to-date of the most innovative small molecule research strategies targeted at treating the burgeoning type 2 diabetes epidemic. Each chapter is written by a recognised thought-leader in this field. The book will be an invaluable reference for researchers and medicinal chemists that concisely explains the biological mechanisms underpinning each cutting-edge therapeutic strategy along with key medicinal chemistry rationales and up-to- date clinical findings.

Twilley, Lieutenant Colonel United States Air Force Nurse Corps The sixth edition of Management of Diabetes Mellitus fully reorganizes and expands upon the previous editions. While the new edition continues to set forth practical and easy-to-use guidelines for management, the newly expanded chapters contain detailed information on managing patients with different types of diabetes (type 1 and type 2), and further differentiates treatment and management strategies for various age groups. This edition also offers clear and concise explanations of the disease process, newly revised guidelines for the use of complementary and alternative therapies, and a guide for developing an educational program. Guthrie and Guthrie also stress the importance of self-management of diabetes, as much of this edition is dedicated to educating the diabetic patient on how to provide self-care, and control both acute and chronic complications of the disease. For the convenience of practitioners and diabetic patients themselves, this book contains reproducible forms, protocols, and guides that can be used for managing diabetes, including: Nutrition questionnaires Meal patterns comparing exchanges Carb Counting and Calorie Points Sample Calorie Point Distributions Exercise Log Intake Assessment Guide Clinical Practice Recommendations A guide to the "pattern approach"

Food is a multidimensional construct which is largely taken for granted in lands of plenty but where for a large proportion of the world’s inhabitants, is part of a daily struggle for survival. The global food economy is larger than the arms and fuel economies combined and larger than many national economies. Multidisciplinary explorations of the dimensions of food shed light on the complexity, enormity, and dialectic dynamism that shape economies, cultures and societies at the macro level and individual needs, rituals, beliefs, and practices at the micro level. Exploring literary, economic, cultural, political, historical dimensions of food, along with notions of food’s place in creating identity and change, this volume represents a small incursion into the much larger landscape that is food.

The recommendations and tools provided here are key to the success of future research and programmatic efforts." -Wayne H. Giles, MD, MS & Ann Albright, PhD, RD (From the Foreword) Type 2 diabetes and its principal risk factor, obesity, have emerged as twin epidemics in communities of color. This book investigates the epidemiology of diabetes in these minority communities, arguing that the determinants of diabetes include not only personal choices, but also broader social and contextual factors, such as community racism, residential segregation, and cultural patterns. This book includes in-depth analyses of many community-based interventions which serve African-American, Hispanic/Latino American, Asian American, and Native American populations. The author also provides suggestions for community-based initiatives to reduce the "obesogenic" environment many minorities live in. Key features: Includes effective intervention approaches for prevention and control of diabetes in racial and ethnic populations Explores the influence of institutionalized racism and residential segregation on the emergence of diabetes and obesity Presents extensive case studies detailing the experiences, challenges, and breakthroughs of various community health initiatives and programs This book will serve as an important resource for professors, students, community leaders, policymakers, health practitioners, and anyone interested in joining the movement to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity.
