Judging rather from success in the execution of a plan, than from the inventive genius and foresight displayed in its formation, mankind are apt to give to wild but fortunate daring the praise, which is due only to judgment, activity, and skill, even when unsuccessfully exerted. It has been well observed of Columbus, that, had he yielded to the entreaties of his crew but a few hours sooner than he had determined to do, his name, if it had survived at all, would have been remembered only as that of a half insane projector. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of American Biography, Vol. 10: Jasper-Larkin Jasper's career has been made the subject of so much laudatory and fantastic writing that it is difficult to arrive at an accurate estimation Of his character. Moultrie's appraisal of him as a brave, active, stout, strong, enterprising man, and a very great partizan (moultrie, post, II, 24) would seem to be a just one. As a scout he was adventurous, trustworthy, and loyal, and a perfect Proteus in ability' to alter his appear ance; he could wear all disguises with admira ble ease and dexterity; and he was equally as remarkable for his cunning as for his bravery (garden, post, p. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Biography, Vol. 4 'Among the adventurous spirits, whom a rest less love of enterprise called from the bosom of repose in England to new scenes and untried perils in our Western wilds, there is no one whose name awakens more romantic associations, than Captain John Smith. His life is as brilliant and exciting as a Fairy tale; and the remarkable adventures he went through served to develop fully his no less remarkable character. It was his good fortune to live in stirring and eventful times, congenial to his bold and roving dis position, and, luckily for posterity, his adventures have been preserved in a characteristic narrative written by himself, from which the principal facts in the following biographical sketch have been drawn. His father was a farmer, and the son was destined to the same pursuit, for which no great extent of education was then believed to be required. The arts of reading, writing, and a tolerable proficiency in arithmetic, were the only attainments to be ao quired in the common schools and the higher in stitutions, or the schools of the prophets, as they were called, were appropriated to the candi dates for the liberal professions. We should be slow to censure our ancestors for this, before we ascertain how far the state of the fact is altered at the present day; for their efforts in the cause of education, considering their circumstances and condition, have not yet been excelled by any of their sons. The issue has taken a far wider range, one of portentous magnitude; and that is, whether the white voter of the North shall be equal to the white voter of the South, in shaping the policy and fixing the destiny of this country; or whether, to put it still more boldly, the white man who fought in the ranks of the Union army shall have as weighty and influential a vote in the government of the Repub lic as the white man who fought in the ranks of the rebel army. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Biography, Vol. 5 The vessel, winch brought over Archibald Stark and his party, arrived in Boston, about the time of the alarm of the prevalence of the small pox. The account we follow, places it in 1720, and states that the vessel, in consequence of hav ing the smallpox on board, was not allowed an entry in Boston. As 1721 was the year, when the smallpox committed the most formida ble ravages in Boston, having been brought in a vessel from the West Indies, it is not unlikely, that the party of Stark arrived in Boston Bay, while the panic produced by the ravages of the disease was at its height. At all events, they were refused permission to land in Boston; and they passed the winter on the banks of the Ken nebec in Maine, and near the spot where vviscas set was afterwards settled. The following year they removed to Nutfield, where thev had been preceded by the first emigrating company of their countrymen. Here a permanent and flourishing settlement was founded, which took the name of Londonderry in 1722, in memory of the place 01 their abode in Ireland.
