Financial upheaval, the crash of Flight 587, grueling confrontations with labor, a rival’s push to acquire the company, and a challenging fight with the government tested the mettle and fortitude of its top executives. Against all odds, American found a way to save what was once the world’s largest airline from certain ruin. Told through the eyes of American’s chief lawyer, this insider’s story of intrigue of the unfolding events is set against a personal look at the innermost workings of the sexiest industry in the world.

Book excerpt: The history of US Airways begins in 1939 as All American Aviation, flying single-engine Stinson Reliant aircraft to carry mail under a contract by the US Postal Service. By 1953, All American became Allegheny Airlines with the goal to become one of America's premier airlines in the East. Allegheny grew by acquiring other airlines, the first being Lake Central Airlines in 1968, followed by Mohawk Airlines in 1972. In 1979, Allegheny became US Air to reflect the airline's desire to grow to the West Coast; this was followed by merging with PSA in 1988, Piedmont in 1989, Trump Shuttle in 1992, and America West in 2005. US Airways is now the fifth-largest airline in the United States, operating more than 2,000 flights daily. This book tells the story of the many men and women who transformed a small regional airline to become one of America's great success stories.

Book excerpt: Pan Am--a name synonymous with glitch, glamour...financial misfortune. For a period of time, it was the face of the sky. It was the aircraft that brought the Beatles to America and was the airliner Stanley Kubrick had in mind when he filmed the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Its airplanes, logo and company have appeared in movies as diverse as Blade Runner to National Lampoon’s European Vacation. In the Fall of 2011, it was be the basis of the ABC drama "Pan Am" starring Christina Ricci. In many ways, the story of Pan Am is the story of America, as the company itself became the representation to the world of America. The story includes monopolies and betrayals, innovation and competition, first class service and terrible losses. The US government aided the company at its outset, and then turned its back on it at its end. Pan Am’s demise was tragic, as international forces beyond its control led to a series of mistakes, mismanagement and bad investments, that eventually brought it under. In this in depth essay, author Don Harris tells the story of the rise and fall of the most famous airline in the world.

Book excerpt: During the fare wars that shook the airline industry in the early 1990s, one airline forged the way. AA, led by pres. Bob Crandall, effectively changed the face of the airline industry. This book chronicles Crandall's meteoric rise at AA and recounts how he helped to lead one of the most difficult, yet successful, corporate turnarounds in U.S. business history. In 1974, he helped pull AA back from the brink of bankruptcy, oversaw the creation of SABRE, the world's first and largest computer reservation system, helped to essentially invent the modern hub-&-spoke operating system, and pushed AA to make the shift from the regulated to the deregulated market faster and better than any other airline. Book excerpt: On December 4, 1753, Gen. George Washington traveled to the junction of the Allegheny River and French Creek during one of his military excursions. There, the settlement was called Venango but soon became known as Franklin. Established in the heart of the original oil country in the 1740s, Franklin is the seat of Venango County. Once referred to as "the Nursery of Great Men," it boasts a rich history of industry and railroads. Franklin's historic district, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, includes businesses that have been staples in the city for over 100 years, such as Feldman Jewelers and Anderson Furniture. Today, Franklin takes great pride in its history and heritage. Franklin's annual Applefest, the largest craft festival in western Pennsylvania, honors the travels of Johnny Appleseed, who planted his trees throughout the town during his journeys, and the bridge that spans the confluence of the Allegheny and French Creek is still known as Washington Crossing.

This book was released on 2017-08-05 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " In February 2013, American and US Airways announced plans to merge the two airlines and entered into a merger agreement. Valued at $11 billion, the merged airline would retain the American name and be headquartered in Dallas-Fort Worth. This follows the mergers of United Airlines and Continental Airlines in 2010 and the acquisition of Northwest Airlines by Delta Air Lines (Delta) in 2008. This latest merger, if not challenged by DOJ, would surpass these prior mergers in scope to create the largest passenger airline in the United States. The passenger airline industry has struggled financially over the last decade and these two airlines believe a merger will strengthen them. However, as with any merger of this magnitude, this proposal will be examined by DOJ to determine if its potential benefits for consumers outweigh the potential negative effects. This testimony focuses on (1) the role of federal authorities in reviewing merger proposals, (2) key factors motivating airline mergers in recent years, and (3) the implications of merging American and US Airways. To address these objectives, GAO drew from its previous reports on the potential effects of prior airline mergers and the financial condition of the airline industry issued from July 2008 through May 2010. GAO also analyzed DOT's airline operating and financial data, airline financial documents, and airline schedule information since 2002."
