Every story focuses on a different theme of life. From that day forth, everybody that rented that house would leave it terrified. Some did not even last one day. Forty years later, all the houses on the block have been improved made bigger and better but that house stands in black and white with no improvements, with no one living in it. The house is falling down but no one dares to come near it, no one dares to tear it down.

Book excerpt: Psalms Chapter 74 Maschil of Asaph 1Why, O EL, have you cast us off forever? Why does your angel of anger smoke against the flock of your pasture? 2 Remember your congregation which you have gotten from the days of old and which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your inheritance. Remember Mount Zion where you have dwelt. 3 Lift up your steps because of the perpetual ruins and all the evil that the enemy has done in your sanctuary. 4 Your adversaries have roared in the midst of your meeting place. They have set up their own signs with the names of their gods replacing your signs that contained your name. 5 It looked like men raising axes up wards to cut thick trees. 6 They strike down with hatchet and hammers all the carved work in your house. 7 They have set you sanctuary on fire and they have profaned the dwelling place of your name to the ground. 8 They said in their hearts, Let us crush them altogether. They have burned up all the meeting places of EL in the land. 9 We see not our signs with your name O EL. There is no more prophets neither is there among us any that knows how long this will be. 10 How long, O EL, shall the adversary reproach? Shall the enemy blaspheme your name forever? 11 Why do you withdraw your hand; your Almighty right hand? Draw it out of your bosom and consume them.

Sponsored by the GCI, the Museum of New Mexico State Monuments, ICCROM, CRATerre-EAG, and the National Park Service, under the aegis of US/ICOMOS, the event was organized to promote the exchange of ideas, techniques, and research findings on the conservation of earthen architecture. Presentations at the conference covered a diversity of subjects, including the historic traditions of earthen architecture, conservation and restoration, site preservation, studies in consolidation and seismic mitigation, and examinations of moisture problems, clay chemistry, and microstructures. In discussions that focused on the future, the application of modern technologies and materials to site conservation was urged, as was using scientific knowledge of existing structures in the creation of new, low-cost, earthen architecture housing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. SIMPLE VERSES is the first complete English translation of the classic collection VERSOS SENCILLOS, written by the Cuban poet Jose Marti (1853-1895) in the United States during his years of exile and revolutionary struggle. This great political and literary figure of the nineteenth century has been one of the most influential men in all the Americas. A spiritual autobiography, SIMPLE VERSES captures in each poem an experience, a feeling or a moment that formed the poet and the man. The poet, the soldier, the troubadour, the legislator, the searcher for truth, the enraptured and the disenchanted lover, the defender of poetry and its transformer, the genius and the man - all alternate in a modulated and musical flow like life itself, which it embodies. The translations of Manuel Tellechea, a Cuban American living in Union City, New Jersey, have been published by the University of Pittsburgh, Freedom House, Transaction Publishers, and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries, the Hispanic Monarchy was one of the largest and most diverse political communities known in history. At its apogee, it stretched from the Castilian plateau to the high peaks of the Andes; from the cosmopolitan cities of Seville, Naples, or Mexico City to Santa Fe and San Francisco; from Brussels to Buenos Aires and from Milan to Manila. During those centuries, Spain left its imprint across vast continents and distant oceans contributing in no minor way to the emergence of our globalised era. This was true not only in an economic sense-the Hispano-American silver peso transported across the Atlantic and the Pacific by the Spanish fleets was arguably the first global currency, thus facilitating the creation of a world economic system-but intellectually and artistically as well. The most extraordinary cultural exchanges took place in practically every corner of the Hispanic world, no matter how distant from the metropolis. At various times a descendant of the Aztec nobility was translating a Baroque play into Nahuatl to the delight of an Amerindian and mixed audience in the market of Tlatelolco; an Andalusian Dominican priest was writing the first Western grammar of the Chinese language in Fuzhou, a Chinese city that enjoyed a trade monopoly with the Spanish Philippines; a Franciscan friar was composing a piece of polyphonic music with lyrics in Quechua to be played in a church decorated with Moorish-style ceilings in a Peruvian valley; or a multi-ethnic team of Amerindian and Spanish naturalists was describing in Latin, Spanish and local vernacular languages thousands of medicinal plants, animals and minerals previously unknown to the West. And, most probably, at the same time that one of those exchanges were happening, the members of the School of Salamanca were laying the foundations of modern international law or formulating some of the first modern theories of price, value and money, Cervantes was writing Don Quixote, Velázquez was painting Las Meninas, or Goya was exposing both the dark and bright sides of the European Enlightenment. Actually, whenever we contemplate the galleries devoted to Velázquez, El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo or Goya in the Prado Museum in Madrid; when we visit the National Palace in Mexico City, a mission in California, a Jesuit church in Rome or the Intramuros quarter in Manila; or when we hear Spanish being spoken in a myriad of accents in the streets of San Francisco, New Orleans or Manhattan we are experiencing some of the past and present fruits of an always vibrant and still expanding cultural community. As the reader can infer by now, this book is about how Spain and the larger Hispanic world have contributed to world history and in particular to the history of civilisation, not only at the zenith of the Hispanic Monarchy but throughout a much longer span of time.
