Book excerpt: In 1835, there were 175 steam locomotives in service in the United States. By 1900, that number had increased to 37,663. In this newly revised and expanded edition of his classic work, renowned railroad historian John H. White, Jr., chronicles the explosive growth and development of the steam locomotive in America -- from the first British imports to the New York elevated locomotives of the 1880s -- and adds more than fifty new pages of superb illustrations and text. Beginning with the early era of locomotive design, White describes the background and methods of the first American builders, the special requirements of American railroads, construction materials, locomotive types, performance, and costs. He then turns to the development of individual components: boilers and running gears, headlights and cowcatchers, sandboxes, bells, and whistles. Throughout, remarkably detailed scale drawings -- many reproduced from the original working drawings -- illustrate design features and modifications. For this new edition, White offers eleven new detailed and comprehensive case histories of individual locomotives, beginning with the 1843 La Junta. Each case history provides a wealth of historical background, mechanical information, and engineering analysis. White also includes a special section that updates and annotates the information found in the original edition. This beautifully complete and authoritative history stands as a landmark in its field. Now in a new edition, it will continue to delight railroad enthusiasts, model builders, historians of technology, and anyone with an interest in American railroads. From reviews of the first edition: "An outstanding engineering andpublishing masterpiece." -- Journal of American History "The definitive reference work on the technical development of the early locomotive." -- Business History Review "White does a splendid job... through the combined use of narrative and over 230 highly detailed, sharp and clear pictures and drawings." -- Civil War History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive documents the role played by mechanical engineers in the development of locomotive design. The steam engine and the mechanical engineering profession both grew directly out of the Industrial Revolution's need for sources of power beyond that of men and animals. Invented in England when coal mining was being developed, the practical steam engine eventually found numerous applications in transportation, especially in railroad technology. J. Parker Lamb traces the evolution of the steam engine from the early 1700s through the early 1800s, when the first locomotives were sent to the United States from England. Lamb then shifts the scene to the development of the American steam locomotive, first by numerous small builders, and later, by the early 20th century, by only three major enterprises and a handful of railroad company shops. Lamb reviews the steady progress of steam locomotive technology through its pinnacle during the 1930s, then discusses the reasons for its subsequent decline.

Book excerpt: A working locomotive engineer on the Southern Pacific, Portland Division, Abdill knows railroading. If ever a book is to be the "compleat [sic] railroader" this one is it. In this, the fifth of his railroad pictorial histories, author Abdill has collected photos from a hundred archives. Many of the photos exceed or approach the century mark in age, most have never been published before, all are rare. These pictures, combined with Abdill's delightful "round house" story-telling and his usual talent for reciting history accurately, yet interestingly, tell this story as it has never been told before. - Publisher

It was the literal engine of the Industrial Revolution, and it played an instrumental role in putting the United States on the world stage. While the steam locomotive's basic principle of operation is simple, designers and engineers honed these concepts into 100-mph passenger trains and 600-ton behemoths capable of hauling mile-long freight at incredible speeds. American Steam Locomotives is a thorough and engaging history of the invention that captured public imagination like no other, and the people who brought it to life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Locomotive Engineers: Erie Railway Edition, Illustrated The soldier marches away to battle with banners flying, bands playing and the plaudits of the nation ringing in his ears. He goes to perform a duty, and in doing so places his life in jeopardy. It is right that he should receive praise as a hero; but while we cheer the soldier for his bravery we are prone to forget another man who daily risks his life in the performance of a public duty the railroad engineer. Progress cast aside the creeping creations of Stephenson and Hedley, and mechanical genius gave to us in their stead the monsters of steel that skim like birds along the shining rails. Traffic demands the same lightning speed alike in sunshine or tempest. In broad daylight or on darkest night a man of iron nerve clutches the throttle of that rushing monster and peers ahead to sec that "all the lights are white." The public never realizes the quiet heroism of this man who stands guard between death and a train-load of passengers, until through someones blunder, the diabolical act of a fiend, or a deplorable accident, he is sent to meet his Maker, with his hand still at the throttle. It is only at the engineers fireside that his peril is known and his bravery fully appreciated. As he leaves his happy home to make his daily trip there are tears in the eyes of loved ones, who realize the many chances there are against his safe return. A misplaced switch, defective track, a broken bridge, a wrong order, and they would bring him back on a stretcher. Heroes they are, all; and instead of waiting until they are dead ere we praise them, it is the purpose of the publishers to present a series of books entitled the "American Locomotive Engineer," in which the life history and courageous deeds of the engineer are set forth that the public may know and appreciate his worth while he is yet able to hear the praise due him. This volume, the Erie Edition of the "American Locomotive Engineer," is the first work of the kind ever published, and in compiling it the hardest task has been to get the engineers to talk of themselves. In most instances it was necessary to go to another engineer, a fireman, or an official to learn of the man's true worth and his heroic deeds. The publishers are under many obligations to officials of the Brotherhood, individual members, and the various officers of the Erie, for numerous favors and assistance in furthering the work, and as the result of many months labor present to the world "the book of the engineer." Book excerpt: The diesel locomotive sent shock waves through rigid corporate cultures and staid government regulators. For some, the new technology promised to be a source of enormous profits; for others, the railroad industry seemed a threat to their very livelihoods. Evolution of the American Diesel Locomotive introduces the reader to the important technological advances that gave rise to diesel engines, examining not only their impact on locomotive design, but also their impact on the economic and social landscapes. J. Parker Lamb describes the development of these technologies, allowing the reader to fully understand how they were integrated and formed a commercially successful locomotive. Like its companion volume, Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive (IUP, 2003), this book emphasizes the role of the leading engineers whose innovations paved the way for critical breakthroughs. Rail fans will appreciate this authoritative work.
