Book excerpt: The last two pharaohs of Egypt's 12th Dynasty are Amenemhat IV and Sobekneferu. Amenemhat IV's reign has long been characterized as brief and marked by decline, but a review of his archaeological remains suggests a different picture-of a stable reign largely perpetuating the traditions of his predecessors. Furthermore, his kingship is followed by that of Sobekneferu, one of the first female pharaohs in Egypt's history. Her rise to power has been seen as an attempt to salvage a weakening dynasty and her kingship as marking the end of Egypt's Middle Kingdom. However, an examination of the archaeological record of both her reign and that of her predecessor indicates that her rule may have not been unexpected. Although Sobekneferu's reign does end the 12th Dynasty, her rule seems to have been recognized as legitimate and stable and the transition to the next dynasty seems to have been a smooth one, suggesting that the end of Egypt's Middle Kingdom may need to be located in the middle of the 13th Dynasty rather than at the end of the 12th Dynasty.
