Book excerpt: CE TRAVAIL PROPOSE UNE ETUDE DES METHODES D'ANALYSE NUMERIQUE DANS LE DOMAINE DES CIRCUITS NON LINEAIRES MICROONDES, BASEE SUR L'AMELIORATION DES PROPRIETES DE CONVERGENCE DES ALGORITHMES. LA PRINCIPALE METHODE CLASSIQUE DE LA RESOLUTION DES EQUATIONS D'EQUILIBRAGE HARMONIQUE EST PRESENTEE. ELLE EST SUIVIE PAR LES DESCRIPTIONS DES METHODES ABS, QUASI-NEWTON ET DE RELAXATION. LES METHODES DE TYPE ABS SONT DES METHODES ITERATIVES DE RESOLUTION DONT LES PROPRIETES DE CONVERGENCE PEUVENT APPORTER UNE AMELIORATION DU TEMPS DE CALCUL GLOBAL. A PARTIR DE L'APPLICATION D'EQUILIBRAGE HARMONIQUE, IL EST MONTRE QUE LA CONVERGENCE PRES DE LA SOLUTION N'EST PAS ASSUREE. LES METHODES QUASI-NEWTON EVITENT DE CALCULER DES DERIVEES PARTIELLES POUR CONSTRUIRE LE JACOBIEN EN LE REMPLACANT PAR UNE APPROXIMATION. ELLES LAISSENT ENVISAGER UNE REDUCTION DU COUT DE CALCUL. CEPENDANT, LE GAIN OBTENU PAR RAPPORT A LA METHODE DE NEWTON-RAPHSON RESTE FAIBLE, DE L'ORDRE DE 2. LES METHODES DE RELAXATION, QUANT A ELLES, UTILISENT LES ITERATIONS NON LINEAIRES LINEAIRES QUI PEUVENT REMPLACER LA RESOLUTION EXACTE DE L'EQUATION DE RECURRENCE PAR UNE RESOLUTION APPROCHEE. IL EST POSSIBLE DE REALISER UNE DIMINUTION DU COUT DE CALCUL A CONDITION QUE LE JACOBIEN SOIT DIAGONALEMENT DOMINANT, CE QUI N'EST PAS TOUJOURS LE CAS

SELON L'APPROXIMATION QUASI-TEM, UN SYSTEME D'EQUATIONS DIFFERENTIELLES EST FORMULE EN CONSTRUISANT UNE FONCTION DE GREEN DANS L'ESPACE EQUIVALENT HOMOGENE, ET EN LE CONSIDERANT COMME UN PROBLEME DE CHAMPS ELECTROSTATIQUES. LA METHODE DES MOMENTS EST UTILISEE POUR SA RESOLUTION. CE TRAVAIL A CONDUIT A UN NOUVEAU LOGICIEL D'AIDE A LA CONCEPTION MICROLINE. MICROLINE EST INTEGRE DANS LE PROGICIEL DE SIMULATION ET D'OPTIMISATION DES CIRCUITS MICRO-ONDES ESOPE, EN LUI DONNANT UN ATOUT SPECIAL POUR POUVOIR TRAITER DES MMICS; 2) REALISER UNE ETUDE DE SIMULATION DES RESEAUX ELECTRONIQUES NON LINEAIRES DANS LE DOMAINE TEMPO-FREQUENTIEL ET METTRE AU POINT UN ALGORITHME A LA FOIS EFFICACE ET ROBUSTE DU POINT DE VUE DU CALCUL NON LINEAIRE, ET ADAPTE AUX STRUCTURES D'UN SIMULATEUR DE CIRCUITS LINEAIRES EXISTANT, DANS LE BUT DE LE TRANSFORMER EN UN SIMULATEUR DE CIRCUITS MICRO-ONDES NON LINEAIRES. UNE NOUVELLE IMPLANTATION DE LA METHODE HARMONIC BALANCE EST PROPOSEE AINSI QU'UN NOUVEL ALGORITHME DE RESOLUTION BGSNL (BLOC GAUSS SEIDEL NEWTON LIKE) QUI A CONDUIT A LA REALISATION D'UN PROGICIEL INDUSTRIEL DE SIMULATION DE CIRCUITS MICRO-ONDES NON LINEAIRES ESOPE NON LINEAIRE

Book excerpt: This new, third volume of Cohen-Tannoudji's groundbreaking textbook covers advanced topics of quantum mechanics such as uncorrelated and correlated identical particles, the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field, absorption, emission and scattering of photons by atoms, and quantum entanglement. Written in a didactically unrivalled manner, the textbook explains the fundamental concepts in seven chapters which are elaborated in accompanying complements that provide more detailed discussions, examples and applications. * Completing the success story: the third and final volume of the quantum mechanics textbook written by 1997 Nobel laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his colleagues Bernard Diu and Franck Laloë * As easily comprehensible as possible: all steps of the physical background and its mathematical representation are spelled out explicitly * Comprehensive: in addition to the fundamentals themselves, the books comes with a wealth of elaborately explained examples and applications Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he also studied and received his PhD in 1962. In 1973 he became Professor of atomic and molecular physics at the Collège des France. His main research interests were optical pumping, quantum optics and atom-photon interactions. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Bernard Diu was Professor at the Denis Diderot University (Paris VII). He was engaged in research at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and High Energy where his focus was on strong interactions physics and statistical mechanics. Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structural Representation of Proximity Matrices with MATLAB presents and demonstrates the use of functions (by way of M-files) within a MATLAB computational environment to effect a variety of structural representations for the proximity information that is assumed to be available on a set of objects. The representations included in the book have been developed primarily in the behavioral sciences and applied statistical literature (e.g., in psychometrics and classification), although interest in these topics now extends more widely to such fields as bioinformatics and chemometrics. Throughout the book, two kinds of proximity information are analyzed: one-mode and two-mode. One-mode proximity data are defined between the objects from a single set and are usually given in the form of a square symmetric matrix; two-mode proximity data are defined between the objects from two distinct sets and are given in the form of a rectangular matrix. In addition, there is typically the flexibility to allow the additive fitting of multiple structures to either the given one- or two-mode proximity information.
