Renditions of the myth were found in art and literature of the Greeks and Romans in the ancient world. The image of the Amazons changed with the culture and ideology that discussed them. The Amazon myth reflected Greek and Roman views of women. Through looking closely at the three stages of the myth of the Amazons one can determine the myth strengthens the image of women that was held by men of the ancient world. The Amazons were connected with the heroes Heracles, Theseus, and Alexander the Great. Individual Amazons such as Antiope, Penthesilea, and Camilla were also dominant in the mythology of the Amazons. By completing a literary analysis of the myths of the Amazons beginning in the eighth century B.C. and through the fourth century A.D. one is able to see what was expected and deemed acceptable of women.

Notably, Soviet archaeologists' discoveries of the bodies of women warriors in the 1980s appeared to directly contradict western classicists' denial of the veracity of the Amazon myth, and there have been few concessions between the two schools of thought since. Postcolonial Amazons offers a ground-breaking re-evaluation of the place of martial women in the ancient world, bridging the gap between myth and historical reality and expanding our conception of the Amazon archetype. By shifting the center of debate to the periphery of the region known to the Greeks, the startling conclusion emerges that the ancient Athenian conception of women as weak and fearful was not at all typical of the region of that time, even within Greece. Surrounding the Athenians were numerous peoples who held that women could be courageous, able, clever, and daring, suggesting that although Greek stories of Amazons may be exaggerations, they were based upon a real historical understanding of women who fought. While re-examining the sources of the Amazon myth, this compelling volume also resituates the Amazons in the broader context from which they have been extracted, illustrating that although they were the quintessential example of female masculinity in ancient Greek thought, they were not the only instance of this phenomenon: masculine women were masqueraded on the Greek stage, described in the Hippocratic corpus, took part in the struggle to control Alexander the Great's empire after his death, and served as bodyguards in ancient India. Against the backdrop of the ongoing debates surrounding gender norms and fluidity, Postcolonial Amazons breaks new ground as an ancient history of female masculinity and demonstrates that these ideas have a much longer and more durable heritage than we may have supposed.

Book excerpt: Modern historians and classicists have studied the ancient Greeks' use of Amazon mythology extensively and exhaustively. Their analysis of the Amazon in literature andartwork has contributed to a better understanding of Greek society, culture, and the mindset of those ancient people. Next to nothing, however, has been written about the ancient Romans' use of the legends of the Amazons and what conclusions, if any, can be drawn about why Amazons appear as they do in the literature and artwork of Imperial Rome. This study draws primarily on my analysis of extant literature and art from the beginning of the reign of Augustus in 27 BCE to the end of reign of Marcus Aurelius in 180 CE. Following the chaos and disharmony of the Roman Republic's Civil Wars, the Amazon was a popular character in the Imperial age of Rome and was used to discuss the creation of identity for the Roman people, though that identity changed over time. The extant sources discussing Amazon imagery survive mostly in two types. The documents are comprised of the literature of Virgil, Strabo, Pliny the Elder, Curtius, Plutarch, Arrian, and Pausanius, all written from around 9 CE until 180 CE, which advocated the greatness of the Roman Empire and also the persona of the Emperor. Public and privately displayed artwork also used the Amazon imagery for statues, pediment reliefs, sarcophagi, mosaics, pottery, and jewelry. The Amazon in Roman literature and art is the Trojan ally, the warrior goddess, the native Latin, the warmongering Celt, the proud Sarmatian, the hedonistic and passionate Thracian warrior queen, the subdued Asian city, and the worthy Roman foe. Amazons appear as part of a changing imperial program in which military and political achievement is intertwined with social identity, public memory, and the imperial ideology of that particular time. Chapter One explores the origins of the Amazon myth, how it was implemented in Greek society, and modern interpretations of the Hellenic use. Chapter Two analyzes how Amazon mythology was used by Romans during the reign of Augustus as part of a literary and artistic vehicle that, like their Greek predecessors, the Romans used to unite their people against a commonly-held enemy. Chapter Three delves into how Romans used Amazons as personifications of both nature and religion. Chapter Four follows how Romans use encounters with Amazons as indicators of larger societal characteristics, both positive and and negative. This thesis analyzes these sources based on time period, thematic repetitions and devices, homage of more ancient sources, contemporary events, location of images, and the style of the Amazon representations in an attempt to discern why the Amazon imagery was used instead of another mythic figure and what possible result the author/creator might be trying to generate. A close examination of these sources suggests that there are trends in the use of the Amazon mythology that reflect the broader interests and contemporary problems of the Roman Empire.

Book excerpt: The mythological Amazon represents the opposite of Greek ideals, contrasting the Ancient Greek identity and their societal ideals. In this thesis, I reconsider the role of the Amazon in Greek art between 750 and 400 BCE with particular focus on costume as an indication of a gendered and ethnic Other. This construction of the Other is conveyed through poetic description and visual motif in the minor arts. Responding to previous discourse, I will provide an alternative exploration of Athenian propensity to relegate unwanted foreign traits into the portrayal of the Amazon. The illustrated clothing is adapted to the scope of local knowledge on foreign customs, limited initially to neighboring East Greeks, and encompassing Scythian archers towards 550. The Amazon represents the Persian enemy metaphorically in public art under Perikles following the Persian Wars. Depicting the feminine Amazon as an eastern enemy is a realization of internal and external threats of infiltration challenging Greek cultural standards. By 450, the mythological Amazon's identity is that of the feminine barbarian constructed in response to apprehensions of domestic and foreign peril of the Greek state.
