Book excerpt: The second phase of the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) aims at supporting forest and farm producers and their organizations (FFPOs) to enable climate-resilient landscapes and improved livelihoods, through the approval of small grants for producers organizations, training and exchanges, and the documentation and dissemination of good practices. The mid-term evaluation highlights the uniqueness of the FFF and its potential to influence global forestry narratives and practices, beyond the sum of its achievements in core countries, and recognizes that the FFF is broadening FAO’s corporate narrative and global positioning on forestry and its interface with agriculture, livelihoods and the environment. The FFF is highly relevant to national contexts with its outcomes well-matching national policies, and to FFPOs priorities and needs; it has effectively applied adaptive management from the onset of Phase II; and it has also contributed to strengthened and expanded partnerships among FFPOs and APEX organizations. The programme achieved satisfactory to highly satisfactory progress towards three of its four outcomes with limited resources, demonstrating high levels of cost-effectiveness. The monitoring and learning system is highly organized and well-coordinated around letters of agreement tracking, but it could improve with the inclusion of an internal results-based monitoring and evaluation system to track the evolution of longer-term results beyond the letter of agreement grant cycle. The FFF is responsive to gender in all countries and to indigenous producer organizations, while the strategy to include youth could be improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropologist Neil L. Whitehead presents a collection of recent fieldwork and the latest theoretical perspectives that illuminate how a range of Native communities in the Amazon River basin, and those they encounter, use the past to make sense of their world and themselves. In recent decades, scholars have become increasingly aware of the role the past plays in the construction of culture and identity. Not only can the past be represented and codified overtly in various ways and media as a history, it also operates more fundamentally and pervasively in cultures as a mode of consciousness or way of thinking about the world, a historicity. ø In addition to examining the particular foundations and significance of history and historicity in such communities as the Guaj¾, Wapishana, Dekuana, and Patamuna, the contributors to this volume consider more broadly how different natural and cultural features can help shape historical consciousness: landscape and territory; rituals such as feasting; genealogy and kinship; and even the practice of archaeology. Also of interest are activist uses of historicity to promote and legitimize the cultural integrity and political agendas of Native communities, especially in contact situations past and present where multiple and often competing forms of history and historicity play important political roles in articulating relations between colonizers and the colonized. ø As this volume makes clear, understanding the powerful cultural role of the past helps scholars better appreciate the inherent dynamic quality of all cultures and recognize a rich resource of agency that can be used both to comprehend and to transform the present

Book excerpt: This book brings together a valuable collection of case studies and conceptual approaches that outline the present state of Amazonia in the 21st century. The many problems are described and the benefits, as well as the achievements of regional development are also discussed. The book focuses on three themes for discussion and recommendations: indigenous peoples, their home (the forest), and the way(s) to protect and sustain their natural home (biodiversity conservation). Using these three themes this volume offers a comprehensive critical review of the facts that have been the reality of Amazonia and fills a gap in the literature. The book will appeal to scholars, professors and practitioners. An outstanding group of experienced researchers and individuals with detailed knowledge of the proposed themes have produced chapters on an array of inter-related issues to demonstrate the current situation and future prospects of Amazonia. Issues investigated and debated include: territorial management; indigenous territoriality and land demarcation; ethnodevelopment; indigenous higher education and capacity building; natural resource appropriation; food security and traditional knowledge; megadevelopmental projects; indigenous acculturation; modernization of Amazonia and its regional integration; anthropogenic interventions; protected areas and conservation; political ecology; postcolonial issues, and the sustainability of Amazonia.

"Nicomedes Suarez-Arauz, Amazonian poet extraordinaire, has fashioned a collection of poems unique in the poetry of Latin America. Upon entering the poems of EDIBLE AMAZONIA the reader encounters abundant images, enticing flavors and, even more remarkable, a path brimming with fauna, trees, flowers and symbols that exhort us to the possibilities of delight that is the domain of true poetry. These texts are exquisite and enthrall the senses and palate with their allusiveness. In them, imagination and poetry conjoin to create a disturbing, graceful and mysterious language that ushers us into magic, myth, and dream"-from prologue by Marjorie Agosin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its U.S. debut a quarter-century ago, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx. Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation. Thus he is concerned with gold and silver, cacao and cotton, rubber and coffee, fruit, hides and wool, petroleum, iron, nickel, manganese, copper, aluminum ore, nitrates, and tin. These are the veins which he traces through the body of the entire continent, up to the Rio Grande and throughout the Caribbean, and all the way to their open ends where they empty into the coffers of wealth in the United States and Europe. Weaving fact and imagery into a rich tapestry, Galeano fuses scientific analysis with the passions of a plundered and suffering people. An immense gathering of materials is framed with a vigorous style that never falters in its command of themes. All readers interested in great historical, economic, political, and social writing will find a singular analytical achievement, and an overwhelming narrative that makes history speak, unforgettably. This classic is now further honored by Isabel Allende's inspiring introduction. Universally recognized as one of the most important writers of our time, Allende once again contributes her talents to literature, to political principles, and to enlightenment.
