Book excerpt: In the heart of the Amazon rainforest, where the air is thick with humidity and the lush foliage stretches as far as the eye can see, a symphony of life unfolds. It is a place where the rhythms of nature reverberate through every leaf, every river, and every creature that calls this vibrant ecosystem home. For centuries, the Amazon has been a source of wonder and intrigue, capturing the imaginations of explorers, scientists, and artists alike. Its towering trees, diverse wildlife, and mystical beauty have inspired countless tales and fueled a yearning to uncover its secrets. But there is one story, a tale of profound significance, that lies at the heart of the Amazon's ancient rhythms. It is a story of a young girl named Ana, whose journey would forever change the course of her life, her tribe, and the destiny of the rainforest itself. Within the tapestry of Ana's tale, the threads of discovery, courage, and interconnectedness are woven together. Through her eyes, we witness the awakening of a deep connection to the rhythms of the Amazon-a connection that transcends the boundaries of time, culture, and the human spirit. In this prologue, we stand on the precipice of Ana's odyssey, ready to embark on a journey that will take us through the hidden corners of the rainforest, into the hearts and minds of its inhabitants, and ultimately, into the very soul of the Amazon itself. The rhythms of the Amazon beckon, their melodies filled with mystery and wisdom. And as we turn the page, we step into a world where the pulse of nature guides the steps of those who dare to listen, reminding us of the profound interplay between humanity and the Earth. Join us now, as we dive into the first chapter of Ana's story, where the awakening of a young girl sets in motion a sequence of events that will shape the future of the Amazon, and perhaps even our own place within this vast and interconnected world.

Book excerpt: Since ancient times, explorers and adventurers have captured popular imagination with their frightening narratives of travels gone wrong. Usually, these stories heavily feature the exotic or unknown, and can transform any journey into a nightmare. Stories of such horrific happenings have a long and rich history that stretches from folktales to contemporary media narratives. This work presents eighteen essays that explore the ways in which these texts reflect and shape our fear and fascination surrounding travel, posing new questions about the "geographies of evil" and how our notions of "terrible places" and their inhabitants change over time. The volume's five thematic sections offer new insights into how power, privilege, uncanny landscapes, misbegotten quests, hellish commutes and deadly vacations can turn our travels into terror.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossing the far corners of the globe, Tales of an Ecotourist showcases travel, from the hot and humid Amazon jungle to the frozen but dry Antarctic, as a simple yet spellbinding lens to better understand the complex issue of climate change. At its core, climate change is an issue few truly understand, in large part due to its dizzying array of scientific, economic, cultural, social, and political variables. Using both keen humor and memorable anecdotes, while weaving respected scientific studies along the way, Mike Gunter Jr. transports the reader to five famous ecodestinations, from the Galapagos Islands to the Great Barrier Reef, revealing firsthand the increasing threats of climate change. Part travelogue, part current events exposé, with a healthy dose of history, ecology, and politics, these tales of ecoadventure tackle such obstacles head on while fleshing out much-needed personal context to perhaps society's greatest threat of all.

Book excerpt: How women-only communities provide spaces for new forms of culture, sociality, gender, and sexuality Women’s lands are intentional, collective communities composed entirely of women. Rooted in 1970s feminist politics, they continue to thrive in a range of ways, from urban households to isolated rural communes, providing spaces where ideas about gender, sexuality, and sociality are challenged in both deliberate and accidental ways. Herlands, a compelling ethnography of women’s land networks in the United States, highlights the ongoing relevance of these communities as vibrant cultural enclaves that also have an impact on broader ideas about gender, women’s bodies, lesbian identity, and right ways of living. As a participant-observer, Keridwen N. Luis brings unique insights to the lives and stories of the women living in these communities. While documenting the experiences of specific spaces in Massachusetts, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Ohio, Herlands also explores the history of women’s lands and breaks new ground exploring culture theory, gender theory, and how lesbian identity is conceived and constructed in North America. Luis also discusses how issues of race and class are addressed, the ways in which nudity and public hygiene challenge dominant constructions of the healthy or aging body, and the pervasive influence of hegemonic thinking on debates about transgender women. Luis finds that although changing dominant thinking can be difficult and incremental, women’s lands provide exciting possibilities for revolutionary transformation in society.
