Book Synopsis World's Best Hobby by : Dave Bell, W6AQ
Download or read book World's Best Hobby written by Dave Bell, W6AQ and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World's Best Hobby is an unusual title for a memoir, which is exactly what this book is. It's my life in the fascinating hobby of Amateur Radio. Much of my professional life is spent producing documentary and reality programs for television (including more than a few about Ham Radio) where I learned that the purpose of a title is to attract an audience and if it was also true, all the better. The challenge with documentary films is to make them entertaining first and foremost, and informational if possible. I've tried very hard to make this book entertaining, and from feedback I've gotten (from Hams and wannabee Hams who found it posted online as I was writing it) I've succeeded, at least to some extent. I tried to make the book fun because Ham Radio is fun. And Ham Radio has more facets than a cheap diamond, as you'll discover as you dig into World's Best Hobby. Enjoy! PS. Let me know what you think of World's Best Hobby - especially if you like it. 73, Dave Bell, W6AQ
Book Synopsis Hogwash for Hamsters by : Jerry Spring
Download or read book Hogwash for Hamsters written by Jerry Spring and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author investigates the humor behind amateur radio, a hobby that has captivated numerous people throughout the world for almost a century. Contrary to popular belief, the hobby continues to grow as it develops and incorporates new technologies, including digital communications, computers, internet, satellites, and so on. While some are into building their own equipment, others are more focused on chasing faint signals in distant lands or competing for bragging rights in various contests. Most would gladly consider themselves as “nerds” for it takes a lot of dedication and knowledge to obtain a license and successfully operate a radio station. Among all the technical mumbo-jumbo, however, there is a lighter side, which is brought out in Hogwash for Hamsters. When we take ourselves less seriously, we become even better ambassadors to the world. So enjoy the limericks, songs, riddles, one liners, and stories. It might just make your day a little brighter.

Book Synopsis Riding the Shortwaves by : Don Keith
Download or read book Riding the Shortwaves written by Don Keith and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amateur or "ham" radio is enjoying a big resurgence, attracting a whole new generation to the excitement of worldwide communications. Many of those into the "maker" and "hacker" groups are discovering this hundred-year-old hobby has continued to not only keep up with the times but is still leading the way in many technical innovations. In this book, long-time ham radio operator and bestselling author Don Keith (call sign N4KC) uses both factual, easy-to-understand advice along with fictional short stories to show those interested just what the hobby is all about in the 21st century. Hams use their radios and antennas to bounce signals off the moon, explore digital communication modes, perform computer control of their stations from anywhere on the planet, talk with astronauts in the International Space Station, use satellites launched by amateur groups, talk to fellow members of the "tribe" all over the planet and more. You do not have to be a geek or electronics nut to get the most from the hobby, though it can be a great way to prepare for a technical career. Hams with all levels of technical skills enjoy the hobby, and Keith gives a number of ways in this fast-paced, easily read book. He details how the Internet, Facebook, smart phones and other technology pose no threat to amateur radio's popularity and, in fact, can be paired with the hobby in many exciting ways. Young, old, or in between, ham radio can be a thrilling hobby, and one that can be combined with other interests such as hiking, camping, weather watching, emergency communications, and more. Keith not only offers examples but uses interesting, well-written stories--sometimes funny or poignant--to illustrate. Whether you are considering exploring amateur radio as a hobby, are already licensed, or want to have a book to help others you know who may be developing an interest, Don Keith's "Riding the Shortwaves" is for you. Come explore the magical world of communications as you ride the shortwaves.

The Fast Track to Your Technician Ham Radio License explains the reasoning and technology behind each correct answer on the Amateur Radio exam so you'll understand and remember the subject matter. Created by an experienced ham and adult educator, it's like having your own, patient, experienced, good-humored mentor for the exam. Technician is the entry-level ham radio license that lets you operate on all ham channels from 30 MHz up, which includes the very popular VHF and UHF bands. To get your license you must pass a multiple-choice test. The Technician license test consists of 35 questions drawn from a pool of about 350. Memorizing the answers to 350 questions is difficult, but The Fast Track makes getting your license easy by explaining the logic behind each correct answer. It's simple: When you understand the material, you remember the answers and pass the test. Best of all, once you've passed your exam you'll have a solid grounding in ham radio basics. - Includes every possible question and every answer - Correct answers clearly marked in bold - Precise instructions for how to locate a testing session, how to prepare, and even what to bring -- and what not to bring -- to the test. - All technical topics explained in clear, plain language, most with illustrations - Step by step instructions to solve all the math problems, complete with exactly which keys to press on your calculator for each problem - Test taking strategies - Hints to easily solve many questions and avoid the traps in the test - Written in "learning order," not just the order of the official question bank. - Covers questions that will be used until June 30, 2018. -Nearly 300 pages packed with information
