Book excerpt: Amateur Craft provides an illuminating and historically-grounded account of amateur craft in the modern era, from 19th century Sunday painters and amateur carpenters to present day railway modellers and yarnbombers. Stephen Knott's fascinating study explores the curious and unexpected attributes of things made outside standardised models of mass production, arguing that amateur craft practice is 'differential' – a temporary moment of control over work that both departs from and informs our productive engagement with the world. Knott's discussion of the theoretical aspects of amateur craft practice is substantiated by historical case studies that cluster around the period 1850–1950. Looking back to the emergence of the modern amateur, he makes reference to contemporary art and design practice that harnesses or exploits amateur conditions of making. From Andy Warhol to Simon Starling, such artistic interest elucidates the mercurial qualities of amateur craft. Invaluable for students and researchers in art and design, contemporary craft, material culture and social history, Amateur Craft counters both the marginalisation and the glorification of amateur craft practice. It is richly illustrated with 41 images, 14 in colour, including 19th century ephemera and works of contemporary art.

Book excerpt: 100 years of Wembley Stadium told through 100 matches. The 1923 FA Cup final – also known as the White Horse final – was the first football match played at the British Empire Exhibition Stadium. Although best remembered for its vast, well-beyond-capacity crowd, which had to be marshalled by a policeman atop a white horse, that afternoon marked the opening chapter of the long and eventful history of the stadium soon to be known simply as Wembley. Over the 100 years since that overcrowded day, Wembley has established itself as the home of the beautiful game and, almost certainly, the world’s most famous football stadium. It occupies a special place in the hearts of players and punters alike. Watching your team at Wembley is the highlight of a fan’s lifetime of support; playing there the fulfilment of a childhood dream. Its sacred pitch has been the crucible of many classic matches across the decades: World Cups have been won here, as have FA Cups, European Cups, play-off finals and more. And that hallowed turf has also seen greyhounds, stunt motorcycles, American football, plus the feet of 72,000 music fans at Live Aid in 1985. Nige Tassell chooses 100 matches - from the well known to the esoteric - that have shaped Wembley's legacy and tells a lively and original alternative history of the past 100 years of football, and of Britain. We hear a ball boy’s perspective on the FA Cup Final when Bert Trautmann broke his neck, about the other commentator of the 1966 World Cup final, and why a cup-winning team of eleven unemployed men didn't receive a trophy from a future king. Field of Dreams is the story of how football found its home.

Thus the full meaning or interpretation of dreams cannot be fully demonstrated through mental or even spiritual stereotypes. But by the intelligent use of this book you will be able to trace out almost any dream combination and arrive at the true nature of its portent.

Book excerpt: Addressing the role which divination played in ancient Greek society, this volume deals with various forms of prophecy and how each was utilised and for what purpose. Chapters bring together key types of divining, such as from birds, celestial phenomena, the entrails of sacrificed animals and dreams. Oracular centres delivered prophetic pronouncements to enquirers, but in addition, there were written collections of oracles in circulation. Many books were available on how to interpret dreams, the birds and entrails, and divination as a religious phenomenon attracted the attention of many writers. Expert diviners were at the heart of Greek prophecy, whether these were Apollo’s priestesses delivering prose or verse answers to questions put to them by consultants, diviners known as manteis, who interpreted entrails and omens, the chresmologoi, who sang the many oracles circulating orally or in writing, or dream interpreters. Divination was utilised not only to foretell the future but also to ensure that the individual or state employing divination acted in accordance with that divinely prescribed future; it was employed by all and had a crucial role to play in what courses of action both states and individuals undertook. Specific attention is paid in this volume not only to the ancient written evidence, but to that of inscriptions and papyri, with emphasis placed on the iconography of Greek divination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis of myself. Gordon Cotter...Male DOB 11: 05: 1934 in Birmingham England. In September 1939, I, and thousands of children, was evacuated from inner cities, to rural Britain, this was to escape the onset of heavy bombing by German Luftwaffe planes. As war had been declared on Germany. I was sent to a small community in Northern Scotland. There was no communication in those days. Only things we heard was from the Radio. It was put on twice a day. The local community was made up of farmers, and some of the wives went to the local Landowner as maids and cleaning staff. I was 5 years old, and it took time for me to be accepted. I went to the local schoolhouse three times a week for lessons. The rest of the time I was expected to help around the farmyard. I began to notice that a lot of women often came to the house and was taken into the parlour, sometimes I would sneak into here and watch, and listen to the women talking. After a while I got braver and just sat in a corner whilst the women were there. It began to come to me that these women were telling my Grandma about their dreams. When they were finished they gave my granda some eggs, or butter. Now I understand it was payment. As time went on I began to understand more of what granda was saying to these women. I became interested in it. I still did not know what it was about. Years past, and when I was about eleven or twelve. The was came to an end. I had settled into life in Scotland and quite enjoyed the life. It was then that I was told about me being an Evacuee, and I could return to my original home if I wanted to. I did not remember any of it so I said that I wanted to stay. (Years Later I regretted this action) I had become very close to my grandmother during this time, and she and I often talked about the dreams and she said that I, did seem to have the gift????? I had by this time began to understand just what she meant by the various talks with these women. I was eventually allowed to sit in on the talks, and sometimes I was asked for my opinion. In later life, my granda became poorly, and she showed me a lot of her private books that she had written down her musings on all of the subjects within dreams. I was asked to take over from her for the readings. When she died, I was asked if I wanted anything of hers. I asked for the books that she had written down her thoughts on the subject. I moved back to Birmingham, and the books lay in my attic for years. In 1972 I came across them and again began to get an interest in the interpretation of dreams. I got out grandma's books and decided to bring them up to date. It has taken my since then to complete them.
