Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1887, J. T. Berry bought 640 acres of school land from the State of Texas. Several years earlier, this raw section of prairie had been home to buffalo herds and the Kiowa and Comanche Nations. Berry could not have known that this land would one day become home to cattle barons, oil and gas pioneers, and a U.S. ambassador. When Charles Oldham Wolflin married Alpha Eunice McVean a decade later and acquired that same section of land, he never dreamed that his son would develop that land from a dairy farm into a premier residential development. Today the Wolflin Historic District is a vibrant, lush neighborhood with tree-lined brick streets and stately houses. It is home to several thousand residents, including descendants of pioneer families, modern-day professionals, and public servants who contribute to the arts, are involved in philanthropy, and are active in community service.

Book excerpt: "Shows how the developers of Highland Park in Dallas and River Oaks in Houston were trying to create better living conditions in a countryside atmosphere away from the uncontrolled development that had blighted late 19th-century and early 20th-century urban neighborhoods in Texas. Also explores why planned suburban and community growth failed at the city-wide level and remained confined to elite suburbs. Also looks at subdivisions in Fort Worth, San Antonio, Amarillo, Wichita Falls, Beaumont, Galveston, and Port Arthur to provide information on how city planners worked with landscape architects to incorporate infrastructure improvements, coordinate landscape planning, and employ such legal devices as restrictive covenants to shape elite space coherently. The work of Texas' foremost suburban house architects, such as C.D. Hill, William Ward Watkin, and John F. Staub, is also analyzed"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathered from various sources, the National Register of Historic Places Collection consists of copies of forms and reports on historic sites of Texas under consideration for inclusion on the National Register, the federal program that recognizes significant historic and archaeological resources. The bulk of the material was gathered and produced by historian Maria Pfeiffer in documenting sites. Most of the locations represented are buildings, but also included are bridges and archaeological sites. The nomination forms generally include information on location, the architecture of a structure, date of construction, its use over time, and the background of the principals involved in its construction or use. Sites in this series that are extensively documented include a multiple-resource nomination for Angelina County, a Blanco, Texas historic district, the west Texas mining town of Terlingua, multiple resources in east and south Dallas, multiple resources in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, the Houston Heights area of Houston, archaeological resources in the Indian Hot Springs area of Hudspeth County, multiple resources in Nacogdoches, multiple resources in Weatherford, the Plemons-Eakle and Wolflin neighborhoods of Amarillo, multiple resources in Abilene, the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin, and multiple resources in the towns of Brenham, Burton and Wharton. Forms gathered from other sources include a multiple-property description of historic bridges of Texas and two versions of a multiple-resource nomination for the rural area along the San Antonio River, west of Goliad. The nomination forms and reports found in this collection were produced at various stages in the review process, including preliminary review by the Texas Historical Commission, and are not necessarily in their final form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, developers from Baltimore to Beverly Hills built garden suburbs, a new kind of residential community that incorporated curvilinear roads and landscape design as picturesque elements in a neighborhood. Intended as models for how American cities should be rationally, responsibly, and beautifully modernized, garden suburban communities were fragments of a larger (if largely imagined) garden city—the mythical “good” city of U.S. city-planning practices of the 1920s. This extensively illustrated book chronicles the development of the two most fully realized garden suburbs in Texas, Dallas’s Highland Park and Houston’s River Oaks. Cheryl Caldwell Ferguson draws on a wealth of primary sources to trace the planning, design, financing, implementation, and long-term management of these suburbs. She analyzes homes built by such architects as H. B. Thomson, C. D. Hill, Fooshee & Cheek, John F. Staub, Birdsall P. Briscoe, and Charles W. Oliver. She also addresses the evolution of the shopping center by looking at Highland Park’s Shopping Village, which was one of the first in the nation. Ferguson sets the story of Highland Park and River Oaks within the larger story of the development of garden suburban communities in Texas and across America to explain why these two communities achieved such prestige, maintained their property values, became the most successful in their cities in the twentieth century, and still serve as ideal models for suburban communities today.
