Book excerpt: Today, there is a disease afflicting many people and arousing fear in those whose ages can start as young as forty years, and moving on through the sixties, seventy and eighty year old groups. It is known as Alzheimers Disease. This book is about sharing this experience with my sister-in-law who came down with this disease in her later years. She was eighty-four at the time and lived to be ninety four years old. I was encouraged to take notes and write about this by a doctor who told me I would be in a position to see its development every day for as long as she remained with me. He said, Take lots of notes. You will be able to observe so much more than I, because I dont spend that much time with a patient, and you will be with her day and night and observe the changes as they happen and what triggers her behavior. Good Luck! With that I started out on my ten year trip through the ups and downs, the good days and bad days of Alzheimers disease. Our days were laced with pain and humor, but I was determined to see it through, laughing a little and crying a lot, hoping the scenery would change, but finally surrendering to this fate that had come upon us. Our mantra became Lets laugh because if we dont we shall most certainly cry! I chose to care for her because I wanted her to be surrounded by love, music and laughter, in a place where we could laugh with her and cry with her and never be alone. Im glad I did.

Globally, the numbers of people living with dementia is predicted to grow to around 79 million by 2030. Accompanying the rise, is the enormity of the social crisis that impacts those affected by dementia. At the onset of her dementia diagnosis, Mary moved to live with her daughter where they began an extraordinarily, challenging journey, negotiating their way through the Alzheimer's maze. This personal and emotional experience, told in the form of letters, tells the story of how and why life changed, as Alzheimer's threw everything out of balance. Tales of laughter and love, of despair and tears are the essence of this story. These letters chart the progress of the disease and the challenges each stage brought. As the story unfolded, there was more to Mary than the dementia...

Other than forgetting a few things here and there, her behavior appeared normal. But then I received a call from my sister telling me that when she got home, Mom had disappeared. She called the police and discovered that she had decided to take a late-night walk and was found three miles away from the house. It was then that we discovered she could no longer be left alone. Once people knew about my mother’s condition, they suggested different movies for me to watch. After seeing these movies, had I been a candidate for suicide, I would have jumped right off the cliff. Watching my mom go from a thriving adult to a helpless child was heartbreaking enough. After spending months crying about my mom’s condition, I had an epiphany. I could continue grieving over her, or I could look at the things that made me laugh about her instead of the things that made me cry. Looking at her disease from this perspective changed everything. Taking care of her was no longer a burden, but a joy. It was also a way for me to give back to someone who had spent their lifetime giving to me. This book is dedicated to caregivers everywhere. I hope it will inspire, encourage, and strengthen you as you take care of your loved ones. No matter what the disease, I hope your perspective will be to focus on the things that make you laugh instead of cry.

No one can ever prepare you for all of life's trials and tragedies that may come your way. Some things are just too big. This author takes you on a journey from child abuse to Alzheimer's. It is a story of a man and his family and the relationships surrounding them. This is a story of forgiveness, worry, hope, tears, more worry, and finally-hopefully-laughter. This is our story. More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million. In 2022, Alzheimer's and other dementias will cost the nation $321 billion. About 1 in 9 age 65 and older (10.7%) has Alzheimer's. Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women. Deaths from Alzheimer's have more than doubled between 2000 and 2019, while those from heart disease - the leading cause of death - have decreased.

Their cruise proves to be more exciting than they ever dreamed and the two emerge happier and more in love than ever. When they return, Crystal is not prepared for Dr. Winters' diagnosis; Eric has dementia. Crystal refuses to believe that all the years they've spent loving each other and raising their four children will soon be erased from Eric's memory causing their lives to change forever. Crystal goes from a state of frustration and denial to understanding and acceptance. With the help of her children, her best friend Sherry and her next door neighbor Dorothy, Crystal learns to laugh in spite of her tears.

Book excerpt: My hope for this book is that I give a glimpse to you, the reader, into the experiences we went through when my husband - a young, healthy man - was diagnosed at age 50 with Early Onset Alzheimer's. My aim is to give you some insight into how to perhaps deal with each change with a little more understanding, and the knowledge that you aren't alone. On those days where you are frustrated or unsure if you can continue with your journey as a caregiver through this terrible disease, you must remember that nobody is infallible and nobody is a saint. You are human, you make mistakes, and you are doing the very best you can. When my husband was first diagnosed, I remember telling a friend, "I don't think I can do this; I don't know if I can ever do the full care when he gets to that stage." I was able to continue the care-giving a lot longer than I ever imagined - one day at a time. I wanted to "give back" in some way to help others who are facing what we faced. My memories are still very vivid right from the first indication that something was wrong. I don't regret any of the treatments we tried or the care-giving I did. My only regret is that I wasn't able to cure him. From our family to yours. God bless you in your journey, knowing you aren't alone.

Book excerpt: Michelle Wyatt's mum always joked with the family that if she ever developed Alzheimer's like her own mother-Michelle's grandmother-they should put her in a home and throw away the key. When she did ultimately succumb to the disease, the choice to put her in a nursing home became the only option. During the next six years, Michelle, a well-known television producer, visited her mum often while her dad kept a daily vigil in the nursing home. What Michelle and her family discovered throughout these challenging times was that allowing themselves to see the funny side of the weird and wonderful things they witnessed while visiting her mum made a difficult journey just that little bit easier. This memoir is a light-hearted but moving account of Michelle's experience with her mum's dementia-giving us an insight in how to cope compassionately, effectively and lastingly with a disease that affects almost 400,000 people in Australia alone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography of my late Aunt Alice, who, like millions of other people, developed Alzheimer's disease. I was responsible for her the last few years of her life after she could no longer live alone. She had quite a sense of humor and could also be difficult. I "inherited" my aunt in 1996 and so much has changed since then. I've included many helpful websites and also provide a comparison of costs in the different kinds of facilities that care for Alzheimer's patients. I also describe the increase in costs from 1996 to the present for each of these kinds of facilities. Barbara Larsen, the author who endorsed my book, has written a book about early-stage Alzheimer's and she provides her readers with detailed activities to decelerate Alzheimer's disease in the early stages. At the end of the book, I discuss the causes of Alzheimer's and how the theory seems to be changing as to the cause. Anyone who has ever had a loved one with dementia and/or Alzheimer's disease will benefit from and enjoy reading this book. Ruth D. Watkins-Leech grew up in the town of Butte, Montana, and attended Longfellow Grade School for eight years and graduated from Butte High School. She was on the journalism staff in high school and had her own column, titled Ruthie's Rumors. Right out of high school, Ruth worked as a dental assistant for several years. She went back to college in her late twenties and received an Associate in Science degree in Respiratory Therapy. She interned at Stanford Hospital and then worked for several years at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California. In her fifties, she traveled extensively with her late husband and wrote travel articles for a magazine titled Lifestyles. Ruth is now retired but enjoys teaching Tai Chi at Gold Country Community Center in Grass Valley, California. She also teaches at an assisted living facility and a convalescent hospital in Grass Valley. All of her compensation is donated to the Gold Country Community Center and to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Cancer Center. Ruth is a breast cancer survivor. This is her first book. Enjoy
