Book excerpt: Beware success: it breeds failure. That's the controversial message of this fascinating and timely book. Much management literature is preoccupied with finding excellent companies and dissecting what makes them successful. Yet all too often, these shining examples slump into decline a few years later. Paradoxically, it is when a business is at the peak of its success that it is most vulnerable to failure. So what exactly is going wrong? Drawing on his expertise as an organizational consultant, Peter Robertson shows that managers in successful companies can easily become complacent, believing that their prosperity will continue unchallenged and unchecked. Worse still, success feeds vanity, making businesses inflexible and resistant to change. Competitors soon catch up and threaten their position. To avoid the success trap, a company must be constantly ready to reinvent itself, even when it seems to be thriving. But regeneration calls for conscious choices and efforts on the part of all the people within the organization. The author explores the kind of leadership that enables and inspires people to change. He shows that values, integrity, and trust create the stability and sense of security that today's companies need not just to win, but to keep on winning. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Employee development isn't magic. With a few coaching fundamentals, which any executive can easily learn from this book, it is possible to develop employees into top performers who will effectively contribute to thebusiness success of their company. In her book, Masha Ibeschitz, an expert who is at home in C suites around the world, shows how coaching works in day-to-day business. Her book is not meant for consultants or professional coaches, but for anyone who wants to practice agile leadership and give employees positive, effective guidance. In 10 chapters, Impact sheds light on how coaching tools can be used to develop employees' potential. It answers questions such as: What is the value of coaching discussions? What exactly is coaching? What occasions are appropriate for coaching? Who is coachable? How does a coach trigger a solution? How does a coach make astute use of different types of questions? The starting point is always a story from the author's own coaching experience, anonymized and altered to disguise real-life details. The take-aways relevant to the topic of each chapter are presented as briefly as possible and as extensively as necessary; info boxes provide a quick overview of specific concepts. Each chapter concludes with a summary of key points.

Book excerpt: The village of Middlewapping, a small and ancient rural backwater of southern England, forms a stage upon or within which the characters in this tale live out their various lives. Each has come to the village via a very different road; for some, such as Sally who works in a bank in the town, to own a house around the village Green has fulfilled a lifetimes' ambition, whilst others such as Rose, a prostitute from one of the less salubrious parts of London, arrive here quite by chance and not of their own volition. And each brings to the tale the manifestation their own experience, and how they now see the world. They are as disparate in age as they are in background; from Will and Emily who are on the cusp of adulthood, to Daphne, in the twilight years of her life. In their middle years are Percival, a former city banker and drug addict, who has come to seek refuge from his former life, and Keith, who with his lady, Meadow, lives on a bus on the outskirts of the village, and yet all are or become in their own way dependant upon one another to gain passage through the business of life, and alliances are formed which would seem unlikely, unless one knew the story. And so, from the very mundane to the very significant, 'Ordinary People' attempts to chart the progress of these people; their loves, their ambitions, and their own very individual ways of living out their lives. There may be irony in the book title, the reader will decide this for themselves, but however this may be perceived, the author has done his best to bring each character to life, and to present them in their stark manifestation, and in their collective manifestation of the human spirit.

Not for lack of trying, or lack of skill, or lack of commitment, but for lack of the proper tool set. This book introduces the Lean Integrated Project Delivery and the Lean Construction Institute's methodology referred to as the Last Planner System of Production Control(R) to Healthcare IT. It is designed to walk you through the steps quickly and easily; a "Vade Mecum" which is Latin for "go with me." Used since the 1600's as a term for guidebooks sufficiently compact to be carried in a pocket, from the beginning, Vade Mecum has also been used for such constant companions as gold, medications, and gems of wisdom. "This book is not just another Project Management book. The tools provided in this book will help deeply integrate IT projects into the business of our Healthcare System, both in clinical and business environments." Michael Garcia, SVP and CIO, Jackson Health System, Miami

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British and Foreign Bible Society is one of the most illustrious Christian charities in the United Kingdom. Founded by evangelicals in the early nineteenth century and inspired by developments in printing technology, its goal has always been to make Bibles universally available. Over the past several decades, though, Bible Society has faced a radically different world, especially in its work in England. Where the Society once had a grateful and engaged reading public, it now faces apathy—even antipathy—for its cause. These days, it seems, no one in England wants a Bible, and no one wants other people telling them they should: religion is supposed to be a private matter. Undeterred, these Christians attempt to spark a renewed interest in the Word of God. They’ve turned away from publishing and toward publicity to "make the Bible heard." God’s Agents is a study of how religion goes public in today’s world. Based on over three years of anthropological research, Matthew Engelke traces how a small group of socially committed Christians tackle the challenge of publicity within what they understand to be a largely secular culture. In the process of telling their story, he offers an insightful new way to think about the relationships between secular and religious formations: our current understanding of religion needs to be complemented by greater attention to the process of generating publicity. Engelke argues that we are witnessing the dynamics of religious publicity, which allows us to see the ways in which conceptual divides such as public/private, religious/secular, and faith/knowledge are challenged and redefined by social actors on the ground.
