Book excerpt: Celebrate Recovery introduces The Journey Continues—four new participant's guides designed as a revolutionary, new second step study curriculum. This step study is taken after completing The Journey Begins (Participant Guides 1-4). In the seven lessons in Guide 8: Living Out the Message of Christ, you will experience Christ-centered and biblically based studies filled with brand new acrostics, deeper questions, and more helpful Bible verses. The content in Guide 8 will focus on a deeper study of the final two principles on the road to recovery: Reserve a daily time with God for self-examination. Bible reading and prayer in order to know God and his will for my life and to gain the power to follow his will. Yield myself to God to be used to bring this Good News to others, both by my example and by my words. "Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires" (Matthew 5:10). By working through the lessons and exercises found in each of the four participant's guides of The Journey Continues, you will find a deeper sense of true peace and serenity, continue to restore and develop stronger relationships with others and with God, and find deeper freedom from life's hurts, hang-ups, and habits.

Book excerpt: Hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, dyslexia, possible schizophrenia, dyscalculia, epilepsy, infertility, premenstrual syndrome, rebellion, depression, and personality disorder—welcome to the world of a family in chaos. But in the midst of it all, God was faithful, merciful, and always present. The dream of a perfect family was not happening for this author. The possibility of ever having a family seemed to be out of reach. Adoption, however, granted a son, then a daughter. And soon after the daughter’s adoption came a totally unexpected pregnancy, a second son. It finally looked as if that perfect family was a reality. However, each of these children had challenges that generated emotional and physical changes within the family. Instead of perfection, there was chaos. Instead of stability, there was insecurity. And instead of calmness, there was continual strife. When a family needs to work through emotional and physical challenges, permanent scars can be created along with feelings of frustration, abandonment, and rejection. Today, the children in this story are adults. Some still work through those scars, but most are emotionally stable and living productive lives. In the Midst of This Mess: A Mother’s Journal was written to share God’s truths and to encourage families who might also be in chaos. Sometimes, we just need to realize we are not alone. Sometimes, we just need encouragement. Sometimes, we just need to be reminded that God is in control no matter what.

This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of the American Journal of Islam and Society comprises four main research articles, each shedding light on the diverse ways in which the Islamic legal and theological tradition has shaped and intersected with premodern and modern societies. To start closer to home: Sam Houston’s contribution entitled “The “Metaphysical Monster” and Muslim Theology: William James, Sherman Jackson, and the Problem of Black Suffering” places American Muslim scholar Sherman A. Jackson’s important monograph Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering in conversation with the work of American pragmatist philosopher William James and suggests that Jackson’s account parallels James’s account of religion in that it speaks of the “practical effectiveness” of the “web of beliefs” constituting Islamic doctrines of God. Our next article explores the practical engagement of the official ulama as spokespersons of the Islamic legal and theological tradition in a different field: post-2011 Egypt. In his article entitled, “Ideals and Interests in Intellectuals’ Political Deliberations: The Arab Spring and the Divergent Paths of Egypt’s Shaykh al-Azhar Ahmad al-Tayyib and Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa,” Muhammad Amasha calls into question the commonplace generalizations about the ulama as being either pro-revolution or pro-regime by examining the politics of two prominent members of the pro-establishment ulama class. Syamsuddin Arif in his “Rethinking the Concept of Fiṭra: Natural Disposition, Reason and Conscience,” turns our attention to an understudied dimension of Islamic psychology: the role of innate human nature, or fiṭra, in the motivation behind human action. Drawing on recent Western as well as Islamicate scholarship, it attends to the biological, epistemological, and ethical dimensions of this Qur’anic concept, suggesting that it be treated not only as the natural tendency for humans to act or think in a particular way, but specifically as the religious, ethical, and rational instinct. Finally, Fateh Saeidi’s “The Early Sufi Tradition in Hamadān, Nahāwand, and Abhar: Stories of Devotion, Mystical Experiences, and Sufi Texts” explores the history of the development of early Sufism in Hamadān, Nahāwand, and Abhar through an analysis of three significant but understudied early Sufi texts: Karāmāt Sheikh abī ʻalī al-Qūmsānī by Ibn Zīrak al-Nahāwandī (d. 471/1078), Ādāb al-fuqarāʼ by Bābā Jaʻfar al-Abharī (d. 428/1036), and Rawḍat al-murīdīn by Ibn Yazdānyār

Book excerpt: Many of us, if not all, have experienced some tragedy in our lives, and secondary victims of tragedy most often do not even see themselves as victims. They may not even realize how deeply and completely they have been impacted, but when they do, it can be overwhelming. On December 3, 1957, my life was changed forever. The night my sister Maria was kidnapped is forever etched in my mind. The reliving of this terrible time in my life has taken many forms throughout the years, and I am sure there will be more to come. The questions now for you and for me are these: Will we be swept up by the evil that is swirling around us? Is it this evil act that will define us, or will we prevail in spite of it? Or will we continue walking in the shadow of darkness? I want you to know that you do not and should not have to believe the devils lies when he says to you, You will never overcome this. You will always be under these feelings, and this is the way you are. I want you to know that God will give you the power to overcome it, just as Jesus said, I have given you authority to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you (Luke 10:19).
