Life as a husband and father back on the family farm in Choctaw County is everything Lummy Tullos hoped for, bringing him some measure of peace after the horrors of war. Unfortunately, his respite looks to be short-lived. Tensions are on the rise throughout the South. On one side are those who wish to put the war behind them. On the other are those who want to keep the Confederacy—and everything it stands for—alive. It’s only a matter of time before the storm breaks, and when it does, Lummy finds himself directly in its path. Caught in this whirlwind of tragedy, Lummy grapples with the thin line between vengeance and justice. The emergence of Captain Tom Ford, an infamous ex-Confederate bent on killing Lummy and all those he loves, makes his struggle even more personal and immediate. In a defiant stand, Lummy rallies a motley crew of steadfast friends dedicated to ushering in the new world he has always dreamed possible—one where freedom is for all regardless of color. The once-clear lines between friend and foe blur amidst a series of deadly skirmishes, laying bare the unpredictable nature of family and friendship in a divided land. Amidst the chaos of battle, though, a haunting question emerges—will Lummy ever find lasting peace, or is he destined to walk the path of death and bloodshed forever?

Book excerpt: More often than not, when we find out that someone is an only child we quickly surmise that the person has been spoiled-rotten by his or her parent (s); thereby, having a reputation of being selfish and bratty. G. Stanley Hall was one of the first experts to give an only child a bad reputation when he referred to their situation as "a disease in itself." Being spoiled can be interpreted in varying ways. One might say that it simply means that they are well taken care of. Yet others may argue that its meaning is derived from a parent (s) over-showering their child with monetary riches; all the while, failing to instill other core values that will enrich their child's personality and character. Being a parent is undoubtedly one of the toughest tasks on earth. Nevertheless, a parent's flagrant-foul on the parenting field can be extremely damaging and detrimental to their child's emotional well-being. Good children can make bad parents, just as bad parents can make good children. For Crystal, things just got real!

Book excerpt: Cataclysmic events, some representing life's most grievous tragedies, have struck Otto Rieke's family. Tragedy and grief, viewed retrospectively, have rendered the subsequent glory of life all the more glorious. Life would have been unlivable, and this book unreadable, were they a mere cosmic pity party. After enduring a full circle along the rim of hell on Earth; and having survived almost in tact, hopefully this book will portray the Riekes' ascension to the glory that has been most of the family's, and Otto's own precarious existence on planet Earth. The author's essentially privileged, fulfilling, and competitive existence (prior to the anguishing events of mid-life), are narrated fully from birth with a comedic flair, and did prepare him for the survival of the really "tough stuff". The Rieke's did not just endure it all, but have thrived, and have ascended time and again. Life continues as a search for the ultimate Truth, and for the Glory that is only God's to possess completely. The family lives to seek its share of that glory. It is Otto's hope that this book is fun and non-controversial. He has attempted to accomplish that by staying on topics about which he claims expertise: politics, religion, and sex. If anything he says offends you, then you need to, either: 1. Repent, OR, 2. Sue him He apologizes only to those who were not offended, but who should have been. The author further hopes that you take the "slight" as it was intended, and hurt all the more. However, seriously, it is also hoped that this book is as entertaining as the exuberant feeling that its writing experience has given Otto. Family is who the Rieke's are. Family is the root of our society, and the family home is the first and most important school that our children will forever attend. Our parents are the first and the most important teachers that our children will forever have. Otto's stunning, wonderful wife of an earlier twenty five years, and of such unpretentious beauty, Mary Beth, and Otto raised five absolutely beautiful children, all of whom have encountered life very successfully. They are successful most of all by being good and loving people, as well as in all their spiritual, academic, athletic, personal, and professional endeavors. All of the Rieke children graduated from St Peters Catholic grade school, and local high schools, Rockhurst, St Teresa's, and Notre Dame de Sion, all of which are in Kansas City, Mo. They and their spouses subsequently have graduated from various universities, including Rockhurst University, Central Missouri State University, Tulsa University, Syracuse University School of Journalism, Missouri University Medical School, St Louis University, The Medical School of Washington University in St Louis, Dartmouth College Medical School, and finally a post residency Fellow at the Harvard School of Medicine. The Rieke children, including their respective spouses are blessed beyond what would seem possible all in one family. The calamities referred to above, and subsequent grief, have chronologically seemed to coincide with - and maybe have been the genesis of, a subsequently inspired inner spiritual strength - indeed an almost supernatural strength to survive. Persistent strings of well earned successes at all personal levels of character, and by all worldly measure, might well be rooted in the strength of the Riekes' souls to survive. The family members have ascended to new lives with the strength to carry on, to love, and indeed to thrive. That, and the author's love relationships with them all, is the grandeur, the glory, of this book. No names have been changed to protect the innocent; there are none. Otto has an unparalleled flair to entertain, and to tell riveting stories with great passion. He will seize your very soul. If you can remain calmly seated while reading this book, then it is a failure. Get ready for the ride.

Book excerpt: From D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge and more, here is the authorized biography of one of the most celebrated paratroopers of Easy Company, Sergeant Shifty Powers, the legendary sharpshooter from the Band of Brothers. Look for the Band of Brothers miniseries, now available to stream on Netflix! As a boy, Darrell “Shifty” Powers’s goal was to become the best rifle shot he could be. His father trained him to listen to the woods, to “see” without his eyes. Little did Shifty know his finely-tuned skills would one day save his life—and the lives of his fellow paratroopers. As one of the original men who trained at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, Shifty was one out of only two soldiers in Easy Company to initially earn the coveted expert marksman designation. He parachuted into France on D-day and fought for a month in Normandy; eighty days in Holland; thirty-nine in the harshly cold winter of Bastogne; and for nearly thirty more near Haguenau, France, and the Ruhr pocket in Germany. Shifty’s War is a tale of heroism and adventure, of a soldier’s blood-filled days fighting his way fromthe shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how one man’s skills as a sharpshooter and engagingly unassuming personality propelled him to a life greater than he could have ever imagined.

Book excerpt: Papa's Back-Road Short Stories by Sam Cross Old highways and back roads seem less traveled, as many people would rather be on main highways to save travel time. Sam "Papa Smurf" Cross is different. This biker prefers to start his adventures in the old highways and back roads leading to old bait houses and old stores, where he might chance upon friendly strangers willing to share wonderful stories, stories he finds worthy of retelling. This treasure of compelling and inspiring stories of ordinary people whose simple acts of kindness brought happiness and hope to families and individuals who survived life's trials, even gaining a new lease on life, are immortalized in Papa's Back-Road Short Stories. A widower opens his life and home to a cat, who, in turn, shares his unconditional love to the widower and later to a cancer stricken girl in need of a friend in "Henry." A lasting friendship that follows after are retold in "Cindy and Henry," "Randy," and "Gunner." A person's worth is more than his or her appearance as the story of a homeless man living his life digging trash cans imparts in "Silver Star." God moves in mysterious ways and nobody would suspect that his help would come from unexpected people, like when two young troublemakers decide to help a widow in need during the time of the Great Depression, in an untitled humorous story that would never get old. Stories like this encourage positivity and belief in God much needed in these times of troubles and deserves a place in anyone's bookshelf.
