Book excerpt: Aluminium is a well established modern lightweight engineering and functional material with a unique combination of specific properties like strengh, formability, durability, conductivity, corrosion resistance, etc. It is present in many intelligent solutions in established markets like building, transport, packaging, printing, and many others, in our fast moving modern society. The various aluminium alloys can be processed quite efficiently in large quantities by conventional fabrication routes, as well as in special sophisticated forms and material combinations for highly innovative high–tec solutions and applications. This book contains latest information about all these aspects in form of the refereed papers of the II th International Conference on Aluminium Alloys "ICAA", where world–wide experts from academia and engineers from industry present latest results and new ideas in fundamental as well as applied research. Since 22 years the ICAA series provides scientists and engineers with a complete overview over the latest scientific and technological developments, featuring profound technology–based overviews and new innovative perspectives. This book is a reference for the scientific community as well as for the aluminium industry working on aluminium alloy development, processing and application issues. It gives a global perspective on the current focus of international research with emphasis on in–depth understanding of specific properties and applications of conventional and advanced aluminium alloys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together the latest research, this book applies new modeling techniques to corrosion issues in aircraft structures. It describes complex numerical models and simulations from the microscale to the macroscale for corrosion of the aluminum (Al) alloys that are typically used for aircraft construction, such as AA2024. The approach is also applicable to a range of other types of structures, such as automobiles and other forms of ground vehicles. The main motivation for developing the corrosion models and simulations was to make significant technical advances in the fields of aircraft design (using current and new materials), surface protection systems (against corrosion and degradation) and maintenance. The corrosion models address pitting and intergranular corrosion (microscale) of Al alloys, crevice corrosion in occluded areas, such as joints (mesoscale), galvanic corrosion of aircraft structural elements (macroscale), as well as, the effect of surface protection methods (anodization, corrosion inhibitor release, clad layer, etc.). The book describes the electrochemical basis for the models, their numerical implementation, and experimental validation and how the corrosion rate of the Al alloys at the various scales is influenced by its material properties and the surface protection methods. It will be of interest to scientists and engineers interested in corrosion modeling, aircraft corrosion, corrosion of other types of vehicle structures such as automobiles and ground vehicles, electrochemistry of corrosion, galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, and intergranular corrosion.--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous casting of non-ferrous metals has been practised for well over 100 years. It has many advantages over static ingot and book mould casting, the most important being improved yield, reduced energy consumption and reduction of manpower, with a consequent reduction in cost. This book shows how the prrocess can be used in an engineering environment for casting a wide range of copper based alloys and precious metals, including gold and silver, and selected nickel alloys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most aluminium-lithium (Al–Li) alloy fatigue crack growth (FCG) data have been obtained for 2nd generation alloys, specifically under constant amplitude (CA) and constant stress ratio (CR) loading, and for long/large cracks. These data show the alloys in a favourable light, but this FCG ‘advantage’ essentially disappears under realistic flight simulation loading, and is also absent for short/small cracks. Furthermore, the FCG advantage is due to inhomogeneous plastic deformation, which has undesirable consequences for other important properties. These consequences have greatly restricted the use of 2nd generation alloys in aerospace structures. FCG data for 3rd generation Al–Li alloys are becoming more available. Many of the issues associated with 2nd generation alloys have been eliminated or greatly alleviated as a result of several changes, including reduced Li contents and innovative thermomechanical processing. Consequently, the FCG behaviour of 3rd generation alloys is more similar to that of conventional alloys. Nevertheless, the 3rd generation alloys tend to have better FCG properties than equivalent conventional alloys; and these and other improvements have already led to many aircraft applications.
