Book excerpt: Portland cement based concrete is the most versatile, durable and reliable building material. Unfortunately, the production of Portland cement is environmentally unfriendly. An interesting alternative is provided by alkali-activated geopolymer materials (AAGM). This book focuses on fly ash-based alkali-activated geopolymer concrete, its production and characteristic properties. The re-use of waste materials and industrial by-products, such as fly ash, is not only economically of interest but also helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The carbon footprint of these materials is much lower than that of concrete using ordinary Portland cement. They thus offer new sustainable solutions to the construction industry. Keywords: Geopolymers, Geopolymer Concrete, Alkali-activated Geopolymer Materials (AAGM), Portland Cement, Fly Ash-based Geopolymer Concrete, Reduction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions, Concrete Applications, Self-Compacting Concrete, High-strength Concrete, High-performance Concrete.

Through the use of various additives, production techniques and chemical processes, there is now a great degree of control over the properties of specific concretes for a wide range of applications. New theories, models and testing techniques have also been developed to push the envelope of concrete as a building material. There is no current textbook which brings all of these advancements together in a single volume. This book aims to bridge the gap between the traditional concrete technologies and the emerging state-of-the-art technologies which are gaining wider use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geopolymer cement is an alternative to Portland cement as a binder in concrete. Fly ash-based geopolymer cement concrete (GCC) requires an activating solution composed of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide in order to develop cementitous properties in the fly ashes The activating solution and Class F fly ashes are combined with fine aggregates and coarse aggregates to produce concrete. Geopolymer cement provides a more sustainable alternative to Portland cement concrete (PCC) by making use of a material that is a waste by-product from coal burning power plants and has lower C02 emissions. In this research, GCC mixtures ranging in compressive strength between 3,200 and 7,000 psi were made to make mild steel reinforced concrete beams and flexural beam-column specimens. The reinforced GCC beams were prepared and tested to determine if a similar load response behavior and failure mode were exhibited to that of PCC beams. Current American Concrete Institute (ACI) design standards were used to design these specimens. The beam-column specimens were tested using a flexural test method developed by Hognestad to determine the stress-strain relationship in the compression area of a flexural member by subjecting a specimen to axial and flexural loads. This procedure is also used to determine the parameters of the Whitney Stress Block and to determine if current ACI design standards for PCC can be applied. The results from the flexural beam-column tests were used to reevaluate the results from the beam tests. The reinforced GCC beams were found to perform similarly to reinforced PCC beams and the current ACI design standards proved to be applicable to GCC flexural members.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geopolymer concrete (GPC) has significant potential as a more sustainable alternative for ordinary Portland cement concrete. GPC had been introduced to reduce carbon footprints and thereby safeguarding environment. This emerging eco friendly construction product finds majority of its application in precast and prefabricated structures due to the special curing conditions required. Sustained research efforts are being taken to make the product suitable for in situ applications. The developed technology will certainly address the issues of huge energy consumption as well reduce water use which is becoming scarce nowadays. Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) a by-product of iron industries in combination with fly ash has proved to give enhanced strength, durability as well reduced setting time. This study investigates the effect of GGBS as partial replacement of fly ash in the manufacture of GPC. Cube and cylindrical specimens were cast and subjected to ambient curing as well to alternate wetting-drying cycles. The 28 day compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength and density of GPC specimens were found. The study revealed increase in compressive strength, split tensile strength, density as well flexural strength up to 40 percent replacement of fly ash by GGBS.

Book excerpt: Geopolymer is sustainable and effective alternative for replacement of traditional cement concrete. Utilization of geopolymer for construction is also an imperative means to reduce the release of harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere which is produced abundantly during the manufacturing of traditional cement. The raw material required for the production of geopolymer is fly ash which is a residual product obtained from coal power plant. The use of these ash in the production of Geopolymer is the only sustainable alternative to the exorbitant landfilling cost and harmful environmental impacts. This thesis covers a comprehensive study of change of three governing parameters: Alkaline concentration, curing temperature and curing period on the mechanical properties of the geopolymer that includes the uniaxial compressive strength, Poisson’s ratio, and Young’s modulus. A detail analysis of change in these mechanical properties with the variations in alkaline concentration, curing temperature and curing period is studied sequentially. Finally, the most dominant parameter for the mechanical strength of geopolymer is suggested. The microscopic analysis of geopolymer at each curing temperature are presented and that includes the formations of microcracks, amount of unreacted fly-ash, formation of NASH (Sodium-aluminosilicate hydrate) crystals, CSH (Calcium-silicate hydrate) crystals and efflorescence phenomenon. Finally, the modes of failure of geopolymer under uniaxial compressive load and the brittle failure mechanism with their stress thresholds are discussed.

Book excerpt: The progressive deterioration of concrete surface structures is a major concern in construction engineering that requires precise repairing. While a number of repair materials have been developed, geopolymer mortars have been identified as potentially superior and environmentally friendly high-performance construction materials, as they are synthesized by selectively combining waste materials containing alumina and silica compounds which are further activated by a strong alkaline solution. Geopolymers as Sustainable Surface Concrete Repair Materials offers readers insights into the synthesis, properties, benefits and applications of geopolymer-based materials for concrete repair. • Discusses manufacturing and design methods of geopolymer-based materials • Assesses mechanical strength and durability of geopolymer-based materials under different aggressive environmental conditions • Characterizes the microstructure of these materials using XRD, SEM, EDX, TGA, DTG and FTIR measurements • Describes application of geopolymer-based materials as surface repair materials • Compares environmental and cost benefits against those of traditional OPC and commercial repair materials This book is written for researchers and professional engineers working with concrete materials, including civil and materials engineers.
