Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Electrical Engineering, Vol. 2: Alternating Currents This volume is intended for those who have such a knowledge of direct currents as is given by Volume I. It presupposes no knowledge of alternating currents. The first two chapters are devoted to the development of the fundamental laws of alter nating currents and alternating-current circuits. Subsequent chapters consider the application of these fundamental laws to alternating-current measurements, to polyphase circuits, to alternating-current machinery, and to power transmission. A chapter on illumination and photometry has been included, as a brief discussion of the underlying principles of light and of light measurements is important in a general course in electrical engineering. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternating-Current Circuit: An Introductory and Non-Mathematical Book for Engineers and Students The matter is, of course, a very important one to electrical students; and it also abounds in difficulties, many of which arise from the fact that authorities are by no means agreed as to the explanation of the various phenomena here dealt with. In a work written from a practical or engineering standpoint, such as this is, it is almost absolutely necessary to look upon electricity as a something which flows along the conductor, as both explanation and comprehension are rendered much easier thereby. The student of advanced theories will consequently find little to interest him herein, except in a technical sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Alternating Current Machinery These problems chiefly concern the theory of the operation of alternating current machinery, and are such as we give to the fourth year students in electrical engineering in this subject. In each chapter the problems of a similar nature are grouped together, and those of each group are then arranged in the approximate order of their difficulty. The groups in each chapter follow each other in as logical an order as possible, both from point of difficulty and the presentation of the subject. In order that this collection of problems may be useful among different classes of students a large variety has been included, ranging from the very simple to those of considerable difficulty. Wherever it is essential the data have been taken from actual apparatus. This was possible through the courtesy of two of the large manufacturing companies. In some of the problems so few data are given that approximate methods of solution must be used, but care has been taken to so state them that the errors thus introduced need not be large. This lack of data is frequently met in practice. It has been thought best not to give introductory paragraphs for each chapter as was done in the preceding volume of prob lems inasmuch as they would have to be of considerable length to be of much value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Engineering Problems, Vol. 1: Part I Direct Current Circuits and Apparatus, Part II Alternating Current Circuits and Apparatus This little book of problems is offered as a system of exercises, suitable for use with any of the available textbooks or with a lecture course. Most of the problems have been used in the classes of the author. A novel feature is the stating of the time needed to perform the actual solving of each problem. This should prove useful not only to the instructor in the assignment of problems, but also to the student as a measure of his own speed. In most of the problems the time given is that which was actually used by an undergraduate student. It will, however, probably be found necessary to allow more time to the average class than is here indicated. Sheets giving the answers to the problems will be provided in such quantities as may be needed, but only to instructors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Elements of Electrical Engineering The first part of the following volume originated from a series of University lectures which I once promised to deliver. This part can, to a certain extent, be considered as an intro duction to my work on Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena, leading up very gradually from the ordinary sine wave representation of the alternating current to the graphical representation by polar coordinates, from there to rectangular components of polar vectors, and ultimately to the symbolic representation by the complex quantity. The present work is, however, broader in its scope, in so far as it comprises the fundamental principles not only of alternating, but also of direct currents. The second part is a series of monographs of the more impor tant electrical apparatus, alternating as well as direct current. It is, in a certain respect, supplementary to Alternating Current Phenomena. While in the latter work I have presented the general principles of alternating current phenomena, in the present volume I intended to give a specific discussion of the particular features of individual apparatus. In consequence thereof, this part of the book is somewhat less theoretical, and more descriptive, my intention being to present the most impor tant electrical apparatus in all their characteristic features as regard to external and internal structure, action under normal and abnormal conditions, individually and in connection with other apparatus, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Alternate Currents for Students This small book consists principally of a portion of a larger work on the outlines of Electrical Engineering which the author has in preparation. The issue of this portion as a separate small book is the outcome of enquiries from numerous students as to where they should find in print the gist of the authors elementary lectures, and of requests that he should publish them. The author has much pleasure in offering to those students part of the section dealing, in the larger work, with alternating currents, in the hope that it may fill a gap and meet a much-felt need. The references to other sections of the larger work have, in most cases, been allowed to stand in the present book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Current Engineering Practically Treated The directing for many years in practical engineering of gradu ates from technical colleges of this and other countries, and also young men starting in the electrical business without complete technical training, has impressed upon my mind the necessity for a general treatise on alternating current engineering presented in a practical and compact way, Without complex methods of expla nation, and free from any matters not bearing directly on purely engineering work. To this end this book has been written, cover ing, without the use of calculus, an outline of the subjects embraced by alternating current engineering. In order that a proper knowl edge of the theory and operation of apparatus may be had, the first part of the book is devoted to elucidating the general laws of mag netism and alternating currents as applied to alternating work. The second part deals directly with modern alternating apparatus, covering in a general way the designing principles and the prin ciples of operation, and in detail the methods of test that have been found to be the best. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternating Current Transformer The following pages originated from a course of University lectures. It is hoped that the book will be of use to the engineer and general reader. Some knowledge of elementary alternating currents is presupposed. I have found that the student who grasps the theory of the transformer has little difficulty with the more complicated actions and reactions taking place in the induction motor, and is also helped in his study of synchronous apparatus. Chapters I and II are merely introductory. Chapters III to V, carefully studied, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the transformer. The tests in Chapter VI should be carried out by the student on a few commercial types. The method of design in Chapter VII is offered as a probable improvement over that usually given in text books. I wish to thank the manufacturers for the loan of cuts used in Chapter X. Thanks are also due the publishers who have maintained their reputation for sparing no effort or expense to make the book mechanically as perfect as possible. I am indebted to Mr. A. S. Kalenborn for reading proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents in Theory and Practice Though there are numerous books dealing with the Principles of Alternating Currents, the writer has on many occasions, when recommending a text book to students, found a difficulty in selecting one which, while giving a sufficiently full account of the laws governing the flow of alternating currents in circuits, also includes an account of the several types of alternating current machines. It is hoped that the present book will fill the gap, since, while the fundamental principles of the alternating current circuit are adequately considered, sufficient matter concerning machines and appliances is given to enable readers who have worked through the book to proceed at once to a specialised study of the particular machine or appliance in which they are more immediately interested. Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few footnotes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration.
