Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Altar, Cross, and Community Some years ago, in a volume called Ethics and Atonement, I endeavoured to show that the object of the Atonement was ethical; that is, that it was to enable us, in Biblical language, to do righteousness, and that such righteousness was not fulfilled simply by actions of a certain kind, but by the maintenance of certain personal relations. In a second book, Ethics and the Family, I argued that the type of the society in which these relations are adequately maintained is to be found in the family, the society of husband and wife, parents and children, brothers and sisters; and I urged that the universal existence of the family, though in diverse forms, showed that these relations are in the true sense of the word natural to mankind. In these lectures I take up what has long seemed to me a subject connected with both these claims. The rite of sacrifice is almost as widespread as the institution of the family, and I have here given reasons for holding that just as the family, at its best, furnishes the type of moral intercourse between persons, in the same way sacrifice, rightly understood, furnishes the type of the reconciliation by which these relations are made possible; a reconciliation which is the same in principle when both parties are human and when one is divine. The book does not claim to be a treatise on the Atonement. At most, it considers an aspect of the doctrine which no treatise on the Atonement can afford to neglect; the less so because, through the whole history of Christian theology, sacrifice and atonement, the altar and the cross, have been so closely linked together. Book excerpt: 2022 Catholic Media Association honorable mention in liturgy The dedication of a new church or altar is a rare event that too few Catholic faithful and clergy are privileged to experience. When it happens, people have questions about the history, spirituality, and practical aspects of this amazing liturgy. This book by pastor and liturgical scholar, Fr. Paul Turner, will especially aid parish leadership in celebrating this rite with greater understanding. In addition to the dedication of a new parish church, this book covers all of the other instances from this part of the Roman Pontifical: Laying the foundation stone, dedicating a church already in use, dedicating a new altar inside an older church, blessing a church to be used as a chapel or oratory, blessing an altar for a similar purpose, and the blessing of a chalice and paten. Essential for any serious student of the liturgy and helpful to those planning any of these celebrations, New Church, New Altar will expand the reader’s appreciation of these unusual liturgies so beautifully reformed after the Second Vatican

Book excerpt: What is Altars about? It is about sacrifice and suffering! It is about the refining fire of God and the way He tempers us to be used as a tool in the Creators hand! It is about waves of Gods grace and the true meaning of Glory! This book uses the Authors real life experiences along with a goodly amount of scripture and revelation from God, to show just how God uses the hardship of this life to draw us into a deeper relationship with Himself, to understand how to become malleable in the makers hand, and how through these hardships He molds us into His image of His Son!

Book excerpt: In Touching the Passion — Seeing Late Medieval Altarpieces through the Eyes of Faith, Donna Sadler explores the manner in which worshipers responded to the carved and polychromed retables adorning the altars of their parish churches. Framed by the symbolic death of Christ re-enacted during the Mass, the historical account of the Passion on the retable situated Christ’s suffering and triumph over death in the present. The dramatic gestures, contemporary garb, and wealth of anecdotal detail on the altarpiece, invited the viewer’s absorption in the narrative. As in the Imitatio Christi, the worshiper imaginatively projected himself into the story like a child before a dollhouse. The five senses, the sculptural medium, the small scale, and the rhetoric of memory foster this immersion.
