Book Synopsis Islam and Social Change in French West Africa by : Sean Hanretta
Download or read book Islam and Social Change in French West Africa written by Sean Hanretta and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-23 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the history and religious community of a group of Muslim Sufi mystics in colonial French West Africa, this study shows the relationship between religious, social and economic change in the region. It highlights the role that intellectuals played in shaping social and cultural change and illuminates the specific religious ideas and political contexts that gave their efforts meaning. In contrast to depictions that emphasize the importance of international networks and anti-modern reaction in twentieth-century Islamic reform, this book claims that, in West Africa, such movements were driven by local forces and constituted only the most recent round in a set of centuries-old debates about the best way for pious people to confront social injustice. It argues that traditional historical methods prevent an appreciation of Muslim intellectual history in Africa by misunderstanding the nature of information gathering during colonial rule and misconstruing the relationship between documents and oral history.
Book Synopsis The History of Islam in Africa by : Nehemia Levtzion
Download or read book The History of Islam in Africa written by Nehemia Levtzion and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-31 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Islamic faith on the continent of Africa spans fourteen centuries. For the first time in a single volume, The History of Islam in Africa presents a detailed historic mapping of the cultural, political, geographic, and religious past of this significant presence on a continent-wide scale. Bringing together two dozen leading scholars, this comprehensive work treats the historical development of the religion in each major region and examines its effects. Without assuming prior knowledge of the subject on the part of its readers, The History of Islam in Africa is broken down into discrete areas, each devoted to a particular place or theme and each written by experts in that particular arena. The introductory chapters examine the principal “gateways” from abroad through which Islam traditionally has influenced Africans. The following two parts present overviews of Islamic history in West Africa and the Sudanic zone, and in subequatorial Africa. In the final section, the authors discuss important themes that have had an impact on Muslim communities in Africa. Designed as both a reference and a text, The History of Islam in Africa will be an essential tool for libraries, scholars, and students of this growing field. Contributors: Edward A. Alpers, René A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Northern Nigeria during the years 1946 to 1966 as an example, Professor Whitaker shows how modern institutions—parliamentary representation, a cabinet system, popular suffrage, and political parties—were introduced and how they resulted not in a displacement of tradition but in an astute absorption by traditional forces. Book Synopsis Conflict in Africa by : Adda Bruemmer Bozeman
Download or read book Conflict in Africa written by Adda Bruemmer Bozeman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do modern Western ideas about the nature of conflict and its resolution apply to Africa? To answer this question, Adda Bozeman examines conflict in Africa south of the Sahara in its many social, political, and cultural aspects, past and present. The author shows how African perspectives on war and diplomacy have evolved under the influence of nonliteracy, tribalism, and a concept of undifferentiated time. In addition, she confirms that indigenous cultural traditions are resurgent everywhere, making it unlikely that African political values will become more closely aligned with those of the West. The two civilizations view conflict differently and have different ways of resolving it. The Africans are more at ease with conflict than their Western counterparts, and they do not see war and peace as the mutually exclusive phenomena that Occidental societies hold them to be. The author concludes that modern Western concepts of conflict not only do not, but cannot, allow for African realities. Originally published in 1976.
