Book excerpt: Exercise balls have steadily become more popular since they were first introduced, for two good reasons: They're fun and they work! People who are on the ball find themselves rolling toward improvements in strength, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Authors Anne Spalding and Linda Kelly published a version of this book just for kids, but they've done extensive research and discovered adults like to have fun, too--and stand to benefit just as much as kids in using exercise balls. So the authors expanded this new book to include exercises and information for instructors and participants of all ages and included activities that can be used not only in school gymnasiums and classrooms but in exercise facilities, workplaces, and homes as well. This book features the following material: -A CD-ROM that includes an image bank, reproducibles, activity sheets, assessments, lesson plans, a glossary of terms, and other teachers' tools -An expansion from K-5 to all ages -Photos, illustrations, and anatomical drawings depicting the muscles as they are being worked in the five core activities -Information and suggestions for using the exercise balls in adapted physical education The exercises are easy to follow and well illustrated, making this a practical and user-friendly resource. Not only will you be equipped to do or teach the over 110 exercises included in the book, but you'll also receive valuable advice on managing your equipment and classes to help you--and your participants--get the most out of your program. And the expansion of this book to include all ages makes it perfect for schools, fitness centers, YMCAs, and wherever fitness is valued--even at home. Fitness on the Ball is presented in three parts: Part I focuses on the basics of using the exercise ball, including safety issues, social and emotional challenges, and management of the ball. Part II features over 110 exercises that you can do on and with the ball, including exercises for core strength, balance, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility. Part III explores the latest research on the impact of physical activity on the brain and also explains how to use exercise balls in a variety of settings, including gyms, classrooms, workplaces, and homes. So if you want to get on the ball and take a step toward a healthier lifestyle--and lead participants in doing so as well--this is the book for you! With its well-researched information, its teacher-tested lesson plans and exercises, its visual format, and its wealth of tools, Fitness on the Ball is a sure hit, no matter what group you lead or setting you are in.

This book introduces healthy activity unifying each letter of the alphabet and exercise, and is intended to reinforce the importance of being active at an early age. "Jacob's ABC's of Exercise" focuses on the various components of exercise such as: aerobic, abdominal, balance, flexibility, strengthening, and stretching. This book is also geared to assisting in the development of self-esteem, building character, and increasing knowledge of exercise in children to help in the fight against early childhood obesity. Parents and teachers will love how this book allows them to interact with the kids to help them learn ideal ways to be and stay fit. According to the American Dietetic Association (ADA), one in every three children is obese and weight-related diseases are a result of their lack of activity. To join national movement to reduce childhood obesity, Mr. Duncan created Alphafit. Alphafit promotes healthy lifestyles during early childhood development by stressing the importance of being active. Mr. Duncan knows that children are our future and wants to start with ACTIVITY as a way to head them in the right direction. Grab a towel and some water and get ready to exercise with Jacob!!

Book excerpt: he brain is the most complex part of the human body. It is the center of intelligence, interprets senses, controls behavior, and initiates body movement. The adult human brain weighs about three pounds is composed of one hundred billion to one trillion neurons. Neurons are specialized cells that use electrical signals to transmit information to other nerve cells, glands, or muscle cells. It is the primary functional unit of the brain. All movement, thoughts, senses, memories, and feelings are the result of signals that pass through these neurons. Attached to the neuron are short, finger-like protuberances called dendrites. Messages are passed from neuron to neuron through the dendrites. Scientists now believe that the brain is able to grow new dendrites and neurons. This is the basis of the Brain Fitness exercises, which were tested over a two-year period by older adults in Port Charlotte, Florida. The brain-stimulating, challenging, novel-enriched activities in Brain Fitness can benefit anyone — regardless of age or cognitive ability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why information is the unifying principle that allows us to understand the evolution of complexity in nature More than 150 years after Darwin’s revolutionary On the Origin of Species, we are still attempting to understand and explain the amazing complexity of life. Although we now know how evolution proceeds to build complexity from simple ingredients, quantifying this complexity is still a difficult undertaking. In this book, Christoph Adami offers a new perspective on Darwinian evolution by viewing it through the lens of information theory. This novel theoretical stance sheds light on such matters as how viruses evolve drug resistance, how cells evolve to communicate, and how intelligence evolves. By this account, information emerges as the central unifying principle behind all of biology, allowing us to think about the origin of life—on Earth and elsewhere—in a systematic manner. Adami, a leader in the field of computational biology, first provides an accessible introduction to the information theory of biomolecules and then shows how to apply these tools to measure information stored in genetic sequences and proteins. After outlining the experimental evidence of the evolution of information in both bacteria and digital organisms, he describes the evolution of robustness in viruses; the cooperation among cells, animals, and people; and the evolution of brains and intelligence. Building on extensive prior work in bacterial and digital evolution, Adami establishes that (expanding on Dobzhansky’s famous remark) nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of information. Understanding that information is the foundation of all life, he argues, allows us to see beyond the particulars of our way of life to glimpse what life might be like in other worlds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together recent developments in quasispecies theory extended to variable environments and practical applications in elucidating viral dynamics and treatment designs. In particular, the existence of an error threshold in rugged fitness landscapes has opened the way to a new antiviral strategy termed lethal mutagenesis, which is now under intensive theoretical, experimental and clinical investigation. As such the book explains how an understanding of quasispecies dynamics within infected organisms has increased our knowledge of viral disease events. From a clinical perspective, population dynamics highlights important problems for viral disease control, such as the selection of drug-resistant mutants that often accompanies treatment failures, and suggests means of increasing the effectiveness of antiviral treatments. The book is intended for students and scientists interested in basic and applied aspects of biophysics, chemistry, biology, evolution and medical virology.
