His first goal is to eliminate Silver City, the only place on Earth free of taxes and central banker cryptocurrencies. But the Silver City Militia won't go down without a fight. As the pressure mounts, Jacob's marriage is fraying at the seams. With newfound wealth and power, and a separation from his wife, Jacob has an unusual affair. Derek rebuilds his life in Silver City, the only safe place for enemies of the state. He works at Freetown Orchard and joins the local militia. He finds love with another man's wife. Not just any man but the wealthiest man in the world, the CEO of Thorium Unlimited, Truman Bradshaw. Derek's unaware of the potential danger until it's too late. Summer returns to Silver City with her father and infant son. While working at the hospital, she meets and befriends Truman's wife, Kyra. Summer soon learns of their dangerous marital discord. In an effort to avoid the impending war in Silver City, and the long arm of Truman and his men, Summer and Kyra hide out in Costa Rica. But are they really safe? Naomi continues her quest for the Democratic nomination, battling the front runner, Corrinne Powers. To win, Naomi will have to sell her soul to the men responsible for killing her husband. Book Synopsis To Know the World by : Mitchell Thomashow
Download or read book To Know the World written by Mitchell Thomashow and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why we must rethink our residency on the planet to understand the connected challenges of tribalism, inequity, climate justice, and democracy. How can we respond to the current planetary ecological emergency? In To Know the World, Mitchell Thomashow proposes that we revitalize, revisit, and reinvigorate how we think about our residency on Earth. First, we must understand that the major challenges of our time--migration, race, inequity, climate justice, and democracy--connect to the biosphere. Traditional environmental education has accomplished much, but it has not been able to stem the inexorable decline of global ecosystems. Thomashow, the former president of a college dedicated to sustainability, describes instead environmental learning, a term signifying that our relationship to the biosphere must be front and center in all aspects of our daily lives. In this illuminating book, he provides rationales, narratives, and approaches for doing just that.

Book Synopsis Cities of the World by : Stanley D. Brunn
Download or read book Cities of the World written by Stanley D. Brunn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkably, more than half of the world's population now lives in cities, and the numbers grow daily as people abandon rural areas. This fully updated and revised seventh edition of the classic text offers readers a comprehensive set of tools for understanding the urban landscape, and, by extension, the world's politics, cultures, and economies. Providing a sweeping overview of world urban geography, noted experts explore the eleven major global regions. Each regional chapter considers urban history, economy, culture, and environment, as well as urban spatial models and problems and prospects. Each begins with two facing pages: a regional map that shows the major cities and a table of basic statistical information about cities and urbanization in each region and a list of ten salient points about that region’s urban experience. Chapters conclude with a list of references, including films and webpages, which can be used by the student and instructor for additional information about specific cities. This edition adds the important new themes of climate change and migration, while continuing to focus specifically on sustainability, water, technology, social and environmental justice, security and conflict, the history of urban settlement, urban planning trends, and daily life. Vignettes of key cities give the reader a vivid understanding of daily life and the "spirit of place." The opening chapter presents an overview of key terms and concepts and explores contemporary world urbanization, and a concluding chapter projects the world's urban future. Liberally illustrated in full color with a new selection of photographs, maps, and diagrams, the text also includes a rich array of textboxes to highlight key topics ranging from migration and immigration to LBGTQ activism, human security, and climate change. Clearly written and timely, Cities of the World will be invaluable for those teaching introductory or advanced classes on global cities, regional geography, the developing world, and urban studies.
Download or read book Toronto written by Edward Relph and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending a hundred miles across south-central Ontario, Toronto is the fifth largest metropolitan area in North America, with the highest population density and the busiest expressway. At its core old Toronto consists of walkable neighborhoods and a financial district deeply connected to the global economy. Newer parts of the region have downtown centers linked by networks of arterial roads and expressways, employment districts with most of the region's jobs, and ethnically diverse suburbs where English is a minority language. About half the population is foreign-born—the highest proportion in the developed world. Population growth because of immigration—almost three million in thirty years—shows few signs of abating, but recently implemented regional strategies aim to contain future urban expansion within a greenbelt and to accommodate growth by increasing densities in designated urban centers served by public transit. Toronto: Transformations in a City and Its Region traces the city's development from a British colonial outpost established in 1793 to the multicultural, polycentric metropolitan region of today. Though the original grid survey and much of the streetcar city created a century ago have endured, they have been supplemented by remarkable changes over the past fifty years in the context of economic and social globalization. Geographer Edward Relph's broad-stroke portrait of the urban region draws on the ideas of two renowned Torontonians—Jane Jacobs and Marshall McLuhan—to provide an interpretation of how its current forms and landscapes came to be as they are, the values they embody, and how they may change once again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was jointly launched by the National Academy of Economic Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and UN-HABITAT. It uses the indicator system and objective data to evaluate the competitiveness of 1006 cities in the world and measures the overall development pattern of global punishment and competitiveness. The important theoretical and practical issues in the development of global cities are discussed. The book looks at the world from the perspective of cities and believes that the world will be fully urbanized in the 300 years from 1750 to 2050. The book points out the challenges faced by global municipal financing and systematically summarizes the experience and methods of municipal financing and concludes that the average competitiveness of global cities declined slightly due to the decline of the average competitiveness of cities in China, the USA and Europe. In addition, this book also launched the new global urban classification standard of the Institute of Finance and Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme for the first time and rated 1006 cities in the world.
