Book excerpt: Author Ross Davidson's story is based on his precarious life growing up in privation. He shares his daily struggles from indelible memories in the pages of this book. Pass by and visit 107 Main Street, where the author was confined to a world of poverty, but accompanied with hope and other people's kindness and generosity. Nevertheless, the story contains odd twists and turns. This is a strange, highly unusual and complex story of a boy born during the Great Depression. Its foundation and running theme begins with the unlikely marriage between a wealthy American and a poor immigrant woman, escaping famine in her native country. After two years of marriage and living with his controlling mother and matriarch of the family and business, Nellie, unable to cope with the prison-like atmosphere, seven months pregnant, left and accepted a room with a friendly family nearby. While his wife and son were destined to a life of poverty, he continued to live in prosperity. Throughout, no child support was ever received, despite court orders. It is the chronology of the haves and have-nots, an encyclopedia of life lessons woven through a small rural American community-a place where a teacher, employers, an iconic hero, two coaches, a mentor, and above all a devoted mother-impacted the life of a young boy. In academics, athletics, student activities and jobs, the boy had good times and bad, but not without periods of anxiety and fear. He learned, however, to use these emotions as stimulants, not deterrents; where discipline, commitment, perseverance and an attitude of never giving up became part of his philosophy. The gravity and sadness of it all were overridden by love, care, support and attitude-the mother who died prematurely, the son who applied the lessons learned to his motivation and maturation. The author and his wife live in the Northeast and have children and grandchildren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Start With an Earthquake... How to make presentations that wow your audience is designed to help anyone deliver a speech that is dynamic, creative and memorable. Using this book, readers can explore what gives a speech impact, through language, gesture, vocal variety and rhetorical devices. It focuses on making a speech more creative, and advises how preparing yourself practically, physically, vocally and emotionally can help banish speech-day panic. It also clarifies why PowerPoint is generally unhelpful (and almost always badly used) and reveals a fool-proof method for constructing a speech from the initial idea to the final delivery. Tim Stockil spent ten years in the theatre as a director before moving into training, so he understands both the concept of top quality performance and how to draw it out of even the most nervous and tongue-tied subject. Central to his method is to ensure that you have both a topic (what your speech is about) and an objective (what you want your audience to feel and do as a result of your presentation). Stockil insists that no speech should ever just be about imparting information, though many people in business fail to realise this. With his theatrical background, he shows how to rehearse properly – again, something that most business people fail to do. Stockil peppers the text with real-life experiences of his 25 years of running courses on presentation skills and coaching people one-to-one. Readers will find examples of speeches and the people who gave them, successful and otherwise. These include a long extract from a very powerful contemporary speech, which is accompanied by notes which demonstrate why it is so effective. Start With an Earthquake... is ideal for those who work in business or have to face presentations on a daily basis. However, the book would also be helpful to anyone making a speech, from a wedding to the Rotary Club.

Book excerpt: Dorothy Day has been described as the most significant, interesting, and influential person in the history of American Catholicism." Outside The Catholic Worker (which she edited from 1933 to her death), Day wrote for no other publication so often and over such an extended period - covering six decades - as the independent Catholic journal of opinion, Commonweal. Gathered here for the first time are Day's complete Commonweal pieces, including articles, reviews, and published letters-to-the-editor. They range from the personal to the polemical; from youthful enthusiasm to the gratitude of an aged warrior; sketches from works in progress; portraits of prisoners and dissidents; and a gifted reporter's dispatches from the flash points of mid-twentieth-century social and economic conflict. Day's writing offers readers not only an overview of her fascinating life but a compendium of her prophetic insights, spiritual depth, and unforgettable prose.
