Book excerpt: A hauntingly beautiful account of how women understand their purpose in life and use their power to transform humankind . . . In twenty-first century America, in a remote town nestled in the Sierra mountain forests, Alma Whitman lives secluded with her brother Edgar and with Fenway, Edgars golden retriever. Alma has never set foot in a church and draws her spiritual strength from the wilderness. She forges emotional and spiritual connections within a community of women called the Sisterhood. Within the community of sisters Alma seeks close relationships with Florence de la Rosa, Dr. Silvia Preston and Desiree Parker, whom she senses will strengthen, guide, and carry forward the work of the Sisterhood. Every Sunday Reverend Henry rushes to the Whitman cabin for his weekly chess game. Edgar and Henry grapple in the heat of mock battle, while Alma prepares lunch for her boys. Henry is an established minister of the cross. He holds great sway in the community of Abbeville, most of which attend his house of worship, Damascus Church. That is until Fredrika Handleys gossip mill links Reverend Henry to Anne Dean, the church secretary and wife of one of the church elders. Soon whispers are heard around town about Reverend Henry and other female members of his church. When Alma, who is almost four decades Reverend Henrys senior, reaches out to Henry, town gossip ignites and an all out battle for the streets of Abbeville begins. Reverend Henry resigns his position as Pastor of Damascus Church. Fredrika and her gossip mill paint Alma and the Sisterhood as forest enchantresses. Abbeville slips under the control of Reverend Jacob, who renames Henrys church, the Damascus Reformed Church. And, Abbeville is literally destroyed.

What happens once she reaches the US is a journey from despair to hope. Timeless in its depiction of the depths of family devotion and the blaze of first love, Luz conveys, with compassion and insight, the plight of those desperate to cross the US border.

Book excerpt: "Facing cancer presents not only physical challenges, but spiritual ones as well. While the medical personnel God brings into these life threatening times are significant influences, the relationship the person has with God outweighs any other factors by far. Alma's journey is not one of passive acceptance of what seems to be the rational, natural result of what she faces. Rather, she chooses to live one day at a time in victory, wonder, and glory. This inspiring story of the grace of God in an individual's life lures you into God's presence and grace. The fine line between faith and obedience has not been consummated, but God continues to walk her through to victory." Stephen R. Tourville, D.Min. Superintendent PennDel District of the Assemblies of God "Alma has not only literally lived the message contained here in this powerful book, but she has also demonstrated incredible grace while walking through the storm. Engraved is her first but certainly not her last book." "Engraved takes you on an emotional roller coaster of the struggle that Alma faced with cancer and the threat of death. She never denied her circumstances but she did indeed defy them. I encourage you to walk with her through this journey of faith. I highly recommend the book and the author," Bishop David R. Huskins Th.D., D.D. Cedartown, Georgia "This book will strengthen you faith, and refresh your spirit. Alma has trusted in God's direction each step of the way in her journey through what should have shaken her foundation. However, because of God's Word and His Spirit of peace, her house is stronger than ever. As you read this awesome testimony, let God speak to your heart, and bring peace to your walk with Him." An engaging, unsettling, deeply satisfying read' SARAH WATERS London, 1938. Alma Fielding, an ordinary young woman, begins to experience supernatural events in her suburban home. Nandor Fodor – a Jewish-Hungarian refugee and chief ghost hunter for the International Institute for Psychical research – begins to investigate. In doing so he discovers a different and darker type of haunting: trauma, alienation, loss – and the foreshadowing of a nation's worst fears. As the spectre of Fascism lengthens over Europe, and as Fodor's obsession with the case deepens, Alma becomes ever more disturbed. With rigour, daring and insight, the award-winning pioneer of historical narrative non-fiction Kate Summerscale shadows Fodor's enquiry, delving into long-hidden archives to find the human story behind a very modern haunting. 'An empathetic, meticulous account of a spiritual unravelling; a tribute to the astonishing power of the human mind - but also a properly absorbing, baffling, satisfying detective story' AIDA EDEMARIAM A PICK OF THE AUTUMN IN THE TIMES, SUNDAY TIMES, OBSERVER AND THE GUARDIAN
