Book excerpt: A modern-day Cinderella story. Before baby Alle could grow to realize and recognize the bountiful, sacrificial, parental love that was bestowed upon herthe meticulous nurturem care and protection of her mother and fathershe tragically lost them both the same day. But without question, her life's journey was providential. This adorable little orphan beat the odds and won the heart of a woman, her aunt Ella. So she grew up in a stable and affluent home with so much warmth. This unconditional love is what Alle Rednic longed for when she spent a portion of her young life in foster care. But when her aunt Ella became the legal guardian of her and two of her girlfriends (Stilya and Trixie) from the orphanage, Alle got a taste of what love feels like. But a few years later, Ms. Ella married a man who didnt seem to like Alle very much. For some reason, he treated her differently from other girls, and after a while, his contemptuous behavior toward her rubbed off on Stilya and Trixie. This was devastating for Alle because these girls were the siblings she never had. But the nightmare actually began the day Ms. Ella passed away. Alle was a senior in high school. And she felt like the one and only person in the world who loved her was gone. Phenomenally, that dark night at the beach, Alle wished upon a falling star. She wished for something that she yearned for most of her life, true love. And in a matter of seconds, a mysterious woman (Mother Nature) infused the power of a magic silver pen that had her name, Christmas Snow, engraved in gold. When Alle's life would have ended up as a woman desolate and alone, this unique gold silver ink pen, rewrote her destiny.

Volume Two contains all twenty-eight days of February (from part of week 5- part of week 9) in one full-length novel.Cassie Wren. Legal assistant. Convenience queen. Thrifter extraordinaire. If there was a "green police" she'd be a fugitive from eco-friendly justice. But when a friend's teasing feels like a challenge, Cassie accepts it. The result? One year. Twelve months. Fifty-two weeks. Three hundred sixty-five days--of green. It seemed simple enough. Cut back on paper plates, plastic forks, and straws. Easy peasy. But when her competitive side wars against her desire for convenience, Cassie finds it's not so easy to be "eco-friendly" and "Cassie-friendly."February After four weeks, Cassie thinks she's got a feel for this eco-friendly thing. She's managed to save a tree or two, a few cubic feet in the landfill, more metal and glass than you can shake a stick at--but no worries. She'd never waste a perfectly good stick. Not now! And she's also saved money--a whole lot more than she ever expected. If only February can be as successful!.Cassie's second month sees her finding alternate personal care items, focusing on personal protection, reducing chemicals, and then there's the girlie stuff. Just sayin'.But not everything goes according to plan. And her heart keeps getting bumps and bruises along the way.... not to mention her car. Finding her Soul Mate... easier and more painful than she ever expected. The Vintage Wren. A serial novel released in fifty-two episodes (for obvious reasons). Each month will be released separately as a full-length novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the identification of the first cases of the coronavirus in December 2019, there has been a significant amount of confusion regarding the origin and spread of the so-called 'coronavirus', SARS-CoV-2, and the cause of the disease COVID-19. Conflicting messages from the media and officials across different countries and organizations, the abundance of disparate sources of information, unfounded conspiracy theories on the origins of the virus, unproven therapies, and inconsistent public health measures, have all served to increase anxiety in the population. Where did the virus come from? How is it transmitted? How does it cause disease? Is it like flu? What is a pandemic? In this concise and accessible introduction, a leading expert provides answers to these commonly asked questions. This revised and updated edition now also covers how the virus mutates, how important these mutations are, how vaccines work, and what we can expect in the near and long-term future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) petitioned the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on April 23, 1997, to prohibit the use of animals in the production of mAb. On September 18, 1997, NIH declined to prohibit the use of mice in mAb production, stating that "the ascites method of mAb production is scientifically appropriate for some research projects and cannot be replaced." On March 26, 1998, AAVS submitted a second petition, stating that "NIH failed to provide valid scientific reasons for not supporting a proposed ban." The office of the NIH director asked the National Research Council to conduct a study of methods of producing mAb. In response to that request, the Research Council appointed the Committee on Methods of Producing Monoclonal Antibodies, to act on behalf of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research of the Commission on Life Sciences, to conduct the study. The 11 expert members of the committee had extensive experience in biomedical research, laboratory animal medicine, animal welfare, pain research, and patient advocacy (Appendix B). The committee was asked to determine whether there was a scientific necessity for the mouse ascites method; if so, whether the method caused pain or distress; and, if so, what could be done to minimize the pain or distress. The committee was also asked to comment on available in vitro methods; to suggest what acceptable scientific rationale, if any, there was for using the mouse ascites method; and to identify regulatory requirements for the continued use of the mouse ascites method. The committee held an open data-gathering meeting during which its members summarized data bearing on those questions. A 1-day workshop (Appendix A) was attended by 34 participants, 14 of whom made formal presentations. A second meeting was held to finalize the report. The present report was written on the basis of information in the literature and information presented at the meeting and the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern Central Europe was the continent’s most decentralized region politically and its most diverse ethnically and culturally. With the onset of the Reformation, it also became Europe’s most religiously divided territory and potentially its most explosive in terms of confessional conflict and war. Focusing on the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, this volume examines the tremendous challenge of managing confessional diversity in Central Europe between 1500 and 1800. Addressing issues of tolerance, intolerance, and ecumenism, each chapter explores a facet of the complex dynamic between the state and the region’s Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Utraquist, and Jewish communities. The development of religious toleration—one of the most debated questions of the early modern period—is examined here afresh, with careful consideration of the factors and conditions that led to both confessional concord and religious violence.

Book excerpt: In the late spring of 1718 near the village of Pozarevac (German Passarowitz) in northern Serbia, freshly conquered by Habsburg forces, three delegations representing the Holy Roman Emperor, Ottoman Sultan, and the Republic of Venice gathered to end the conflict that had begun three and a half years earlier. The fighting had spread throughout southeastern Europe, from Hungary to the southernmost tip of the Peloponnese. The peace redrew the map of the Balkans, extending the reach of Habsburg power, all but expelling Venice from the Greek mainland, and laying the foundations for Ottoman revitalization during the Tulip period. In this volume, twenty specialists analyze the military background to and political context of the peace congress and treaty. They assess the immediate significance of the Peace of Passarowitz and its longer term influence on the society, demography, culture, and economy of central Europe.
