Book Synopsis Greek Honeysuckle and Magnolias by : Themis Tsaoussis
Download or read book Greek Honeysuckle and Magnolias written by Themis Tsaoussis and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Honeysuckle and Magnolias The collections of stories in this book are vignettes of my life in the 1930's and 1940's. Greek call them "shadow writings" and define them as "portraits that slowly fade away". I preserved the portraits, arranged them in chronological order and added missing links which to my surprise remained vivid with the passage of time. Greek honeysuckle is the messenger of youth, a frequent companion of my innocence in the process of developing, understanding and merging with life. Magnolias are couriers of everything new. One is very special. Image here

Book Synopsis Television Beyond and Across the Iron Curtain by : Kirsten Bönker
Download or read book Television Beyond and Across the Iron Curtain written by Kirsten Bönker and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-1950s onwards, the rise of television as a mass medium took place in many East and West European countries. As the most influential mass medium of the Cold War, television triggered new practices of consumption and media production, and of communication and exchange on both sides of the Iron Curtain. This volume leans on the long-neglected fact that, even during the Cold War era, television could easily become a cross-border matter. As such, it brings together transnational perspectives on convergence zones, observations, collaborations, circulations and interdependencies between Eastern and Western television. In particular, the authors provide empirical ground to include socialist television within a European and global media history. Historians and media, cultural and literary scholars take interdisciplinary perspectives to focus on structures, actors, flow, contents or the reception of cross-border television. Their contributions cover Albania, the CSSR, the GDR, Russia and the Soviet Union, Serbia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia, thus complementing Western-dominated perspectives on Cold War mass media with a specific focus on the spaces and actors of East European communication. Last but not least, the volume takes a long-term perspective crossing the fall of the Iron Curtain, as many trends of the post-socialist period are linked to, or pick up, socialist traditions.
Book Synopsis Language and German Disunity by : Patrick Stevenson
Download or read book Language and German Disunity written by Patrick Stevenson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book investigates the history of national disunity in Germany since the end of the Second World War from a linguistic perspective: what was the role of language in the ideological conflicts of the Cold War and in the difficult process of rebuilding the German nation after 1990?" "German division and re-unification were crucial to the development of Europe in the second half of the twentieth century. This account of the relationship between language and social conflict in Germany throws new light on these events and raises important questions for the study of divided speech communities elsewhere. The book will interest sociolinguists, historians, sociologists, and political scientists."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Juli Zeh written by Necia Chronister and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume casts a critical light on one of Germany’s bestselling and most controversial authors. Juli Zeh’s literary work is not only widely read in Germany, but also featured on high school and college syllabi both in Germany and abroad. In recent years and in the wake of the Covid 19 lockdowns, Zeh’s output has only increased, though her most recent work, Unterleuten (2016), Über Menschen (2021), and Zwischen Welten (2023; co-written with Simon Urban), has evolved away from the literary and philosophical thought that informed her more nuanced earlier work and towards a more conservative representation of contemporary social dynamics. While her work continues to garner prestigious awards, Zeh herself, who is an honorary judge at the Brandenburg constitutional court and a seemingly omnipresent public intellectual, has taken increasingly libertarian positions in recent political debates -- whether about Germany’s public health measures in response to the pandemic, or the country’s role in the Ukraine war. This volume traces the development and broad impact of Zeh’s writing while reflecting on the responsibility of the scholars who read and teach it to confront her ambiguous and sometimes troubling politics.
