Book excerpt: Henry David Thoreau tells us that “all good things are wild and free.” These words are found in his lecture “Walking,” which he delivered numerous times, beginning in 1851. The connection between wildness and freedom is seen throughout Thoreau's writing. To him, the good life required balancing the civilized and the wild, and his idea of nature informs his idea of liberty. For Thoreau, the wild holds numerous individual and social benefits. It is a place where a person can discover and renew oneself. It is a place that allows for experimentation. It is a place that can bring radical regeneration or even a restructuring of society. Thoreau's life in the Walden Woods, though he was somewhat isolated, was a kind of social experiment that he conducted on himself. Its goal was personal as well as social regeneration. Thoreau's views of wildness and freedom underlie his original and relevant libertarian philosophy. It is individualist and social. It is grounded in an understanding of nature and a desire to or figure out one's place within it. Thoreau's belief in acting on principles also gave him a practical attitude toward political violence and helped him make a persuasive case for peaceful revolution. Originally given as part of a lecture in 1851, "Walking" was later published posthumously as an essay in the Atlantic Monthly in 1862. Now being a chief text in the environmental movement, Thoreau's "Walking" places man not separate from Nature and Wildness but within it and lyrically describes the ever beckoning call that draws us to explore and find ourselves lost in the beauty of the forests, rivers, and fields.

Download or read book Henry David Thoreau written by Flinders, Tom and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), embodies classic features of the American spirit--nonconformity, the impulse to seek renewal in nature, and the will to stand firm by his convictions. Famous for his retreat to Walden Pond and his night in jail (described in The Duty of Civil Disobedience), he was a profoundly religious man, though he remained unaffiliated with any organized religion. He might well serve as a patron saint for today's spiritual but not religious seekers. Thoreau experienced mystical ecstasies in his youth; he followed an almost monastic discipline of contemplation; he was an early pioneer in the exploration of Hinduism and eastern religion, which he integrated with his deep immersion in nature and his highly refined social conscience. This anthology, which focuses specific attention on Thoreau's spiritual and prophetic writings, draws on his voluminous journals, correspondence, essays, and selection from Walden and his other key works."--Publisher description
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Henry Thoreau by : Lester H. Hunt
Download or read book The Philosophy of Henry Thoreau written by Lester H. Hunt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Thoreau is widely considered to be one of the greatest nature writers, among whose best-known works are Walden and Walking. In this book, Lester Hunt shows that his writings have a compelling philosophical dimension as well. Thoreau seldom argues for his ideas the way other philosophers do. Rather than setting up proofs designed to trap the reader into agreeing with him, he challenges the reader – by means of narratives, jokes, questions, and paradoxes -- to recognize possibilities previously unknown and unexplored. Thoreau's own explorations led him to several distinctively philosophical theories: an intuitionist metaethics, an ethics based on virtue and self-realization, a politics that is fundamentally individualist and anarchist, and a secular religion in which nature is pre-eminent.
