This first comprehensive guide to all 68 spider families in North America beautifully illustrates 469 of the most commonly encountered species. Group keys enable identification by web type and other observable details, and species descriptions include identification tips, typical habitat, geographic distribution, and behavioral notes. A concise illustrated introduction to spider biology and anatomy explains spider relationships. This book is a critical resource for curious naturalists who want to understand this ubiquitous and ecologically critical component of our biosphere.

Book excerpt: Animal venoms are complex mixtures of bioactive peptides and proteins with diverse pharmacological effects. These active molecules make up the components of venom toxins responsible for many pathological outcomes in snake envenomation. Although venom toxins can be deadly, they can potentially be lifesaving once their respective pharmacological targets and mechanistic actions are better understood. For example, the discovery of captopril from Brazilian viper, Bothrops jararaca venom which has been shown to antagonise angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) for the treatment of hypertension.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers relatively recent and significant topics in the field of ion channel research. Ion channels form the molecular basis for membrane excitability in cells present in the cardiovascular and nervous systems. In many non-excitable cells, ion channels contribute to diverse physiological functions, including the secretion of signaling compounds like hormones and insulin, cell volume regulation, intracellular signaling, especially Ca2+ signaling, etc. Many human diseases have been attributed to abnormal channel functions and defective membrane expression of channel proteins. On the other hand, ion channels are excellent models for studying protein biophysics, especially the allosteric regulation of protein function by miscellaneous stimuli. Therefore, research on ion channels carries significant meaning for the understanding of basic protein biophysics and diverse physiological functions. Such vital information also assists in developing novel and effective treatments for related human diseases. This book provides graduates and scientists in both basic and clinical levels a comprehensive understanding of cutting-edge advances and a useful and stimulating platform for tackling their own questions about ion channels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of arthropod species, ranging from arachnids (spiders and scorpions) to hymenopterans (ants, bees, and wasps) and myriapods (centipedes), are venomous and use their venoms for both defense and predation. These venoms are invariably harmful to humans, and some may cause serious injuries, e.g., those from scorpions, spiders, and wasps. Arthropods’ venoms are also known as rich sources of biologically active compounds and have attracted the attention of toxin researchers for years. In this century, venom component analysis has progressed considerable due to the advances in analytical techniques, in particular, mass spectrometry and next-generation deep (DNA and RNA) sequencing. As such, proteomic and peptidomic analyses using LC–MS have enabled the full analysis of venom components, revealing a variety of novel peptide and protein toxins sequences and scaffolds, potentially useful as pharmacological research tools and for the development of highly selective peptide ligands and therapeutic leads, like chlorotoxin. Due to their specificity for numerous ion-channel subtypes, including voltage- and ligand-gated ion channels, arthropod neurotoxins have been investigated to dissect and treat neurodegenerative diseases and control epileptic syndromes. This Special Issue collects information on such progress, encouraging contributions on the chemical and biological characterization of venom components, not only peptides and proteins, but also small molecules, their mechanisms of action, and the development of venom-derived peptide leads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 2005. The worlds worst modern catastrophe is visiting itself on China. Avian Flu (H5N1) is estimated by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to kill up to 150 million people, worldwide. The deadly virus has only to complete its leap from fowl, to human cross-contamination. China has already killed millions of domestic chickens, ducks, and geese. But the slaughter was a double-edged sword. They have killed the poultry earmarked to keep Chinas citizens from starvation during the 2005-2006 winter, which has been forecasted, to one of the most ferocious in five decades. China also is convinced that the United States new ballistic missile defense program is targeted at neutralizing her minuscule nuclear deterrent, relegating her to lifetime servitude to the Americans, the worlds last remaining superpower. Beijing party leaders vow that will never happen. The Peoples Republic of China must become a modern superpower. Only then will she be able to demand the outright monetary grants she needs to survive. Modernization of her army will cost 100 billion US dollars. Beijing knows that sum resides in the coffers of Hong Kong. Thus Operation Hongse Spider is born.
