Waste Not, Want Not 節約用水從自己做起 -Owain Mckimm 6/18 The enormous fires that burned through Australia last year and this year have scientists very concerned. They worry that when the rains fall, they will wash the ash left by the fires into the rivers and pollute Australia’s water supply, a situation that would leave thousands of Australians without drinking water. This looming water crisis in Australia has also called attention to Taiwan’s own dangers of water shortage. Although Taiwan has an average rainfall of 2,500 millimeters per year, its lack of storage capacity means that much of that rainfall flows into the ocean. In fact, the nation’s reservoirs can only store about six weeks’ worth of water before running completely dry. As a result, Taiwan faced water shortages nine times between 2002 and 2015. An additional element that perpetuates this problem is the low cost of water in Taiwan—one of the lowest in the world. Inexpensive water bills mean people hardly think about saving water. And although a rise in water prices could reduce Taiwan’s water usage significantly, no politician is brave enough to suggest that solution. To reduce the risk of a severe water crisis in the future, it’s therefore up to us to cut back on the amount of water we use. 6/19 To figure out what actions are needed to conserve water, it helps to know where water is being wasted. In an average household, flushing the toilet and showering account for an overwhelming percentage of all water used. It stands to reason, then, that the most significant change you can make is to your bathroom habits. Everyone loves a long hot shower, but do try to limit your shower time to around five minutes. To help you stick to this rule, find a five-minute-long song that you can play while showering, and make sure you’re finished when it ends! Limiting your shower time is pointless if you’re allowing the shower water to drain away while it warms up. To solve this, collect that initial stream of cold water in a container. You can then use that water to flush your toilet. Besides trying to minimize the number of times you flush, check your toilet for leaks. After all, leakages are the biggest waste of water. You may think these small actions won’t make much of a difference, but there are over 23 million people in Taiwan. If everyone takes steps to waste less water, the nation’s water security is all but assured. News Report 看新聞學英語 Huge Locust Outbreak Hits East Africa, Heads Beyond 蝗災肆虐東非威脅南亞 People 人物側寫 Florence Pugh: Hollywood’s Confident Newcomer 佛蘿倫絲. Denim Jeans: From Worker Safety to Fashion Staple CNN News Who Are BTS? How to Protect Your Smart Home from Hackers Camino de Santiago—The Walk of a Lifetime 西班牙朝聖之路——千載難逢的健行體驗 Writing 寫作練習 Translation Practice 翻譯寫作 Reading Skill 閱讀策略 The Black Poodle 〈黑色貴賓犬〉 Environment 環境保育 Waste Not, Want Not 節約用水從自己做起 Plus Talk 會話百分百 Expressing Opinions 表達意見 1. Book excerpt: This book explores the effect of the pandemic on human rights; civil and political rights (CPR); economic, social, and cultural rights (ESCR); and freedoms around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic radically changed many aspects of the lives of individuals and entire societies. This crisis and the unprecedented experience required extraordinary solutions, regulations, and rapid responses from decision-makers to limit the spread of the disease and protect societies. To this end, during this period, many countries chose to impose states of emergency, resulting in the granting of extraordinary powers to the executive. This has sometimes been a very convenient pretext for introducing various types of restrictions, oppressive surveillance, and other legal arrangements that can be qualified as human rights violations. The authors make a scholarly summary of this period, identifying possible rights violations — but above all — recommendations for the future. This crisis has shown how important it is to have universal, equitable health and social protection systems that cover all community members equally and without discrimination, and the authors remodel the concept of "human rights" and "human needs". The book covers varied examples from lockdowns to vaccination to information control, across Spain, Poland, South Africa and Uganda, the Czech Republic, Belarus and Ukraine, and Russia. This book will appeal to higher-level students and scholars of law, political science, and international relations and will also be helpful for public policymakers at national and international levels.

Book excerpt: An insightful and evidence-based assessment of our urgent need to enact labor law reform—and how to achieve it. Millions of non-union workers want unionization, but our current labor-management relations law conspires to deny them meaningful opportunities to secure collective workplace representation. The resulting low rates of collective bargaining impose economic, political, and social costs on us all. In Fulfilling the Pledge, Roger Hartley addresses the plight of American workers, who face a grim, uncertain future, as the digital workplace reshapes the hierarchical post–World War II industrial relations system that once gave workers a voice. Through empirical evidence and the lens of law and policy, Hartley examines what industrial sociologists call the chronic “representation gap” and clarifies how a wide-ranging movement could build a vocal constituency for the congressional enactment of labor law reform. The pledge made in the 1935 National Labor Relations Act to encourage establishment of industrial democracy—where workers possess a voice in their places of work—remains unfulfilled. Speaking to policymakers, scholars, historians, and the average citizen, Fulfilling the Pledge makes a compelling case for collective workplace representation that serves the greater good, even as American labor relations law continues to undermine collective bargaining by workers and becomes an increasingly significant political and social issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hockney reflects upon life and art as he experiences lockdown in rural Normandy in this inspiring book which includes conversations with the artist and his latest artworks. On turning eighty, David Hockney sought out rustic tranquility for the first time: a place to watch the sunset and the change of the seasons; a place to keep the madness of the world at bay. So when Covid-19 and lockdown struck, it made little difference to life at La Grande Cour, the centuries-old Normandy farmhouse where Hockney set up a studio a year earlier, in time to paint the arrival of spring. In fact, he relished the enforced isolation as an opportunity for even greater devotion to his art. Spring Cannot Be Cancelled is an uplifting manifesto that affirms art’s capacity to divert and inspire. It is based on a wealth of new conversations and correspondence between Hockney and art critic Martin Gayford, his long-time friend and collaborator. Their exchanges are illustrated by a selection of Hockney’s new Normandy drawings and paintings alongside works by Van Gogh, Monet, Bruegel, and others. We see how Hockney is propelled ever forward by his infectious enthusiasms and sense of wonder. A lifelong contrarian, he has been in the public eye for sixty years, yet remains entirely unconcerned by the view of critics or even history. He is utterly absorbed by his four acres of northern France and by the themes that have fascinated him for decades: light, color, space, perception, water, trees. He has much to teach us, not only about how to see . . . but about how to live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long understudied, Plato's Laws has been the object of renewed attention in the past decade and is now considered to be his major work of political philosophy besides the Republic. In his last dialogue, Plato returns to the project of describing the foundation of a just city and sketches in considerable detail its constitution, laws and other social institutions. Written by leading Platonists, the essays in this volume cover a wide range of topics central for understanding the Laws, such as the aim of the Laws as a whole, the ethical psychology of the Laws, especially its views of pleasure and non-rational motivations, and whether and, if so, how the strict law code of the Laws can encourage genuine virtue. They make an important contribution to ongoing debates and will open up fresh lines of inquiry for further research.

Book excerpt: The Death Penalty's Denial of Fundamental Human Rights details how capital punishment violates universal human rights-to life; to be free from torture and other forms of cruelty; to be treated in a non-arbitrary, non-discriminatory manner; and to dignity. In tracing the evolution of the world's understanding of torture, which now absolutely prohibits physical and psychological torture, the book argues that an immutable characteristic of capital punishment-already outlawed in many countries and American states-is that it makes use of death threats. Mock executions and other credible death threats, in fact, have long been treated as torturous acts. When crime victims are threatened with death and are helpless to prevent their deaths, for example, courts routinely find such threats inflict psychological torture. With simulated executions and non-lethal corporal punishments already prohibited as torturous acts, death sentences and real executions, the book contends, must be classified as torturous acts, too.

It brings together an international and interdisciplinary range of scholars to consider how extinction is memorialised in museums and cultural institutions, through monuments, in literature and art, through public acts of ritual and protest, and in everyday practices. In an era in which species are becoming extinct at an unprecedented rate, we must find new ways to engage critically, creatively, and courageously with species loss. Extinction and Memorial Culture: Reckoning with Species Loss in the Anthropocene develops the conceptual tools to think in complex ways about extinctions and their aftermath, along with providing new insights into commemorating and mourning more-than-human lives. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the environmental humanities, extinction studies, memorial culture, and the Anthropocene.
